Dear Sri Prakash, City Central Library, Hyderabad developed its OPAC containing around 3.6 lac titles (including branches) long ago. They used TLMS package. It has mutilingual support except for Urudu. For Urudu they have used English transliteration. While OPAC is available for public use in the library premises, circulation module is for library staff only. Circulation involves bar coded membership cards and bar coded labels for books. Branches are yet to be linked up, though the branch library data is with central library ints OPAC. Internet has been made available in City Central Library for a very long time (3-4 years?). Dr Rama Reddy of UOHYD was the adivisor/consultant for the automation project. Moreover the same library takes part in the famous Million Books Project of Carnegy Mellon University -- Several Thousand books have been digitised and amde available for public using good sophisticated digital scanning set up. Bangalore too has some public libraries fully automated. If you talk of non-State funded public libraries British Library Automation is the Best by all standards. There is already a public library in Bangalore to claim credit as the first library. Last year, the City Central Library (West), Vijayanagar, launched itself as a computerized library with internet connectivity, OPAC etc. Sathya -------------------------------------------------- N V Sathyanarayana Chairman & Managing Director Informatics (India) Ltd Bangalore 560003, India Phone : 91-80-23365940 www.informindia.co.in -------------------------------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: Vyasamoorthy(a)icicikp.com [mailto:Vyasamoorthy@icicikp.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 10:00 AM To: lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in Subject: [LIS-Forum] "First computerised library in country to be inaugurated" Forwarded for the information of Lis-forum members. What is 'First' about this Shaik only knows! ================== http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=96567 First computerised library in country to be inaugurated 23rd August 2004. Bashir Pathan Gandhinagar, August 22: The Gandhinagar District Library will earn the distinction of being the first computerised library in the country, when it will be thrown open for the general public at a function here on August 24, to be organised by the State Youth and Culture Department. The computerisation of the library, with Internet connectivity, has been done by the State Directorate of Libraries, under a project funded by Kolkata-based Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation under the Union Human Resources Development Ministry. It is envisaged, under the project, to introduce computerisation in all government district libraries in the state. Director of Libraries A F Shaikh told Express Newsline on Saturday that computerisation of district libraries in five of the 26 districts was over, which included Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Bharuch and Junagadh. The Gandhinagar library would be the first to be inaugurated on August 24 by Education Minister Anandiben Patel, who also holds the Youth and Culture portfolio. Shaikh said the process of computerising the remaining district libraries was on and would be over by March next year, while the computerisation of two central libraries - one each in Gandhinagar and Vadodara - would be completed under the project by the end of this year. All district and central libraries would have internet facilities and be connected with the G-SWAN (Gujarat State Wide Area Network) under the Centre-aided project. ''Once the system is in place, a book-lover will be able to avail a book of his choice sitting at home from any district library. He has to just surf a list of books posted by the Directorate on the Internet and place an order for that book,'' he explained. Asked, the director said postal charges for dispatching of books to the readers would be borne by the concerned government district library authorities. The reader has to dole out a meagre Rs 40 as one-time deposit to register himself with the government library of a district. The directorate has received a Rs 1.50-crore grant from the Kolkata-based Foundation under the project to purchase computers, hardware, software, colour TVs, VCRs and create other infrastructure facilities at the district and central libraries being computerised with internet linking. The Foundation has accepted the government's proposal to provide grant of Rs 4 lakh to help charitable trusts set up taluka or village-level libraries. The government has also plans to computerise its nine brail libraries in Bhavnagar, Porbandar, Visnagar, Idar, Bhachau, Ahmedabad and, Mehamdabad. ================================================= Dr.P.Vyasamoorthy, Advisor, Virtual Information Centre, ICICI Knowledge Park, Genome Valley, Turkapally, Shameerpet Mandal, RR District, Hyderabad 500078 INDIA Email: vyasamoorthy(a)icicikp.com Phone - Office: +91(40)23480053 Fax: +91(40)23480007 Phone Residence: +91(40)27846631 _______________________________________________ LIS-Forum mailing list LIS-Forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in http://ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/mailman/listinfo/lis-forum

Venue: Einstein Auditorium Department of Studies in Physics Manasagangotri, Mysore 6 Dr. Shalini. R. Urs Professor & Chairperson ------- Abstract of the talk : Data mining services require accurate input data for their results to be meaningful, but privacy concerns may influence users to provide spurious information. In this talk, we discuss whether users can be encouraged to provide correct information by ensuring that the mining process cannot, with any reasonable degree of certainty, violate their privacy. Specifically, we present a scheme, based on matrix-theoretic distortion of user data, that can simultaneously provide a high degree of privacy to the user, retain a high level of accuracy in the mining results, and be efficient with respect to its response times. The performance of the scheme is validated against representative real and synthetic datasets. ------ About the Speaker Jayant Haritsa is on the faculty of the Supercomputer Education & Research Centre and the Department of Computer Science & Automation at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Dear Professionals, our library has a good collection of books as well as serials, even we have maintained the AICTE norms of collection, actualy we have quite lot of multiple copies rather titles,we r planning (demand from management) to weed out some old editions of the same titles, but the irony is that some of the old edition of the title is usefull for some extent say "Advertising Management" by Batra and others, currently we have its eleventh edition, but still students felt in need of 5th,6th editions of the title,we have come across like same situation for several titles, so could anyone plz help me out in how far it is better to weed out the old editions, is it worth to weed out the multiple copies,(old editions) does it not affect the collection development, and is there any weeding out policy, considering the above case. thanking you, Mahesh G T Alliance Business Academy, Bangalore.
