Dear All, May i know the source that can be used as a base for charging fine amount for lost books which are out of print and not available in market. Yahoo is offering a new search service designed to help people find more-relevant content online. The Y!Q service (next.yahoo.com) offers "contextual" search that analyzes the page being read and gives a list of related search results. Instead of starting a search from a text box, a person would search while reading a specific page. Simply highlight relevant portions of text on the page and run a "related search," and Y!Q analyzes the page, extracts the most relevant concepts and uses those as inputs. NATIONAL SEMINAR ON DEVELOPMENT OP PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN INDIACALL FOR PAPERS The City Granthalaya Samstha, Hyderabad is organizing a 3day i.e. 28 feb-2 Mar 2005 on NATIONAL SEMINAR ON DEVELOPMENT OP PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN INDIA. The sub themes are Use of IT in public libraries Impact studies such as Library legislation, RRRLF. Conservation, Preservation , Computerisation and digitization in public libraries Continuing education programs Generation of resources Development of infrastructure coordination and resource sharing among public libraries and other libraries Modernisation of public libraries Any other related / relevant topic All the professionals are requested to contribute a paper on any of the sub themes. The contributors are also requested to present their experiences and case studies, which will go a long way in sharing the knowledge as well as development of the public libraries in India. They are also requested to restrict the the paper to 3000 words. Prasanna (t.s.prasanna(a)intel.com) NCSI-Net Coordinators ----------------------------------------- ABOUT THE SPEAKER Jean-Claude Guédon holds his doctorate in the History of Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and is currently Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Montreal. He is also member of the Information Sub-Board of the Open Society Institute. He became interested in electronic publishing in the late '80's when he began thinking about what an electronic journal would be like. Thanks to help from Apple Canada, his University and several granting agencies, he was able to launch the first Canadian scholarly e-Journal, Surfaces, in the Fall of 1991. Prof. Guedons interest in both theoretical and practical issues regarding electronic publishing has led him to produce numerous papers on the subject as well as to present at conferences worldwide. He has been actively engaged in projects pushing the boundaries of scholarly communication including serving on the steering committees of the Canadian National Site Licensing Project and the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. He has lectured extensively on related topics in various seminars and meetings organized by prestigious agencies including the National Library of Medicine, Association of Research Libraries, Open Society Institute, IFLA, Society of Scholarly Publishers, OCED-IMHE, and so on. He is widely identified with the open archive philosophy, but also with calls to revise the evaluation process of scientific papers and has tried to help SPARC's battle to create change and competition. In December 2001, Prof. Guedon was invited by the Soros Foundation to participate in the meeting that has given rise to the Budapest open access initiative (http://www.soros.org/openaccess/read.shtml) His other areas of interest include the Internet and the relationship between arts and technology. He has written several publications in French in this area and one of his books La Planète Cyber. Internet et cyberespace, published in Paris by Gallimard in 1996, has been a minor best seller in the French-speaking world. Digital resources are being created, as the technology available at an affordable cost to the libraries. Building-up digital collection and infrastructure required to access them is a challenge that every library has to deal with today. As an Amrita University Initiative through Amrita Colloquium on Digital Libraries - 2005 (ACDL-2005), we would like to introduce different experiences in DL technologies and managing the Digital Collection in Libraries. Each Panelist will present their experiences on Creation and Management of Digital Libraries and E-Resources. After each presentation, participants will get enough time to interact with the panelists.
