Arati Menon Carroll | July 09, 2005 >From 10 years at Infosys to founder CEO of the high-profile IT company Bangalore Labs, three years ago Umesh Malhotra looked every bit the typical corporate executive. Then in 2002, after selling Bangalore Labs to PlanetOne Asia, Malhotra put his cash to good use and chased a nagging dream. By March 2003, Hippocampus, Malhotra's very own library for Bangalore's children, was up and running. >From IT to I Read I have an engineering degree from IIT Chennai. I picked up the first job I was offered on campus, at a then little known IT company called Infosys Technologies. After 10 years at Infosys, managing their electronics payment vertical, my business vertical contributed 5 per cent of company revenue. I quit in 1999 to start Bangalore Labs, an IT infrastructure management company. Two-and-a-half years later, we sold the company. I quit IT and followed my dream to start a children's library. What is Hippocampus? Hippocampus is not a library, or a club, a work shop, or a community centre -- it is all that and more. We call it an experience centre -- a vibrant and dynamic environment offering an almost endless range of opportunities from every area of life. Today, the Hippocampus library has more than 7,000 books for children to choose from. Children can choose and watch DVDs in the film room, or play games on the available PCs. Kids can choose from six Hippocampus clubs -- the Art Club, Music club, Journalism Club (a club which lets them start their own newspaper), Nature Club, Cooking Club and the Adventure Club -- and participate in themed monthly activities and creative learning forums. The inspiration Before I quit Infosys, my wife and I spent 18 months in the US and were astounded by all that a child there is exposed to in terms of education and hands-on experience. There were public libraries in every neighbourhood. Here you could find children of all ages engaged in reading, working on school projects or checking out activities and workshops that they could sign up for during the course of the year. And all this, amazingly, was free. When we came back to India, in 1999, we realised that although an enormous number of children's books are published each year, children in India have hardly any access to them. While the inspiration for Hippocampus came from American public libraries, the concept itself took a life of its own. Not just a library for rich kids Our experience centre in Bangalore's Koramangala residential area was set up for privileged children. In December 2004, we opened a second centre. But we're far from being just a library for rich kids. The Hippocampus Reading Foundation, which we set up together with our non-profit partners like the Akshara Foundation, among others, is involved in setting up libraries for kids in slum communities, government schools, and NGO-run schools. We currently run 38 such libraries. They have to prove that they are serious enough about the cause to raise a one-time investment of Rs 5,000 per 20 kids. After that, we work with them on an ongoing basis for free. We have also introduced a reading reward system whereby children are positively reinforced for their reading habits, with quarterly day trips organised for winners. Where do we go from here? Ultimately, we want all children to read. Just this week, along with Wipro, we began a pilot run of taking over library transformations in lower income group schools. We loan the initial investment to these schools who repay based on an affordable installment plan. This is not a business opportunity, it was born out of the realisation that we need to fix a problem in school libraries and that all our work can't be outside schools. We want our entire reading programme to be built around a sustainable model. We charge our beneficiaries in different segments based on their income levels. Today, because our work with less privileged children has expanded so much, we're running on a bit of a deficit. But we're working on alternative revenue streams like developing reading fluency assessment tests that we can then sell to mainstream schools for profit. In two years, our entire programme will be self-sustaining. A9 launched OpenSearch

"We want OpenSearch to do for search what RSS has done for content." OpenSearch is a collection of technologies, all built on top of popular open standards, to allow content providers to publish their search results in a format suitable for syndication. You can see how this works on A9.com. Many sites today return search results as a tightly integrated part of the website itself. Unfortunately, those search results can't be easily reused or made available elsewhere, as they are usually wrapped in HTML and don't follow any one convention. OpenSearch offers an alternative: an open format that will enable those search results to be displayed anywhere, anytime. Rather than introduce yet another proprietary or closed protocol, OpenSearch is a straightforward and backward-compatible extension of RSS 2.0, the widely adopted XML-based format for content syndication. Any site that has content-and a search box-can choose to return results in OpenSearch RSS. This includes travel sites, classifieds, encyclopedias.... If you can provide search results for something, it probably can fit into the OpenSearch model. Returning OpenSearch results is easy-the format is the standard set of XML elements, plus three additional elements designed to support navigation between pages. OpenSearch is comprised of: OpenSearch RSS: XML format for providing open search results. OpenSearch Description Documents: XML files that identify and describe a search engine. OpenSearch Aggregators: Sites, such as A9.com, that can display OpenSearch results. OpenSearch is not a search engine-it is a way for search engines to publish their search results in a standard and accessible format. And because OpenSearch is built on top of standard RSS, existing tools-such as blog readers-can read OpenSearch results natively. While existing RSS tools can't take advantage of all of the advanced features that OpenSearch offers, this backward compatibility guarantees a rich set of client applications for OpenSearch today. After several months of development, Elsevier, Inc. announced the initial release of xqDoc, an open source XQuery documentation tool. See details at http://www.xqdoc.org XQuery, under development by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) (http://www.w3.org/XML/Query) is a new query/programming language based on XML and used in conjunction with XML databases such as MarkLogic (http://www.marklogic.com) a commercial database, and eXist (http://exist.sourceforge.net) on the open source side. As XQuery applications became more complex, it became evident that a tool was needed to assist with documenting the ever growing and equally complex XQuery modules. xqDoc provides a simple vendor neutral solution for documenting XQuery library and main modules, as well as tools to generate a user friendly presentation of this documentation and cross referencing information. This is being accomplished through (4) specific components: 1. xqDoc proposes a new commenting convention that extends the currently defined XQuery comment style. This convention is modeled after Java's Javadoc commenting style, and provides a simple, uniform way to document XQuery source code. 2. xqDoc defines a standard xqDoc XML schema. This schema provides a neutral format for storing information for user-defined XQuery modules as well as 3rd party proprietary functions that may be implemented in other programming languages. 3. xqDoc provides a vendor neutral Java based conversion package that parses an XQuery library or main module and generates an xqDoc XML document modelled after the xqDoc XML schema. Support for specific XML database platforms is provided by writing vendor specific drivers to store the generated xqDoc XML into the vendor's database. 4. xqDoc provides a vendor neutral presentation component, consisting of XQuery main modules and a library module, that can process the xqDoc XML document(s) stored in a XML database and generate an extensively hyperlinked XHTML navigation interface. KALA AGM and Elections

Dear friends, I am happy to learn that AGM of Karanataka State Library Association has been convenede on Saturday, 9th July 2005 at 4.00 pm at Granthangana, City Central Libary, RPC Layout (Near last RPC Layout Bus stop), Vijayanagar. KALA being apex state level LIS Professionl Association we need to attend this meeting in large number and make the meeting a success and more meaningful event. There is a need to look at the meeting with a broad and true spirit to fulfill the aspirations of peers who have nurtured KALA all these days. The entire Govering Body and members need to be active not just the key office bearers. There should be good coordination between various LIS Associations atleast at state level. We have to set up a Web site of KALA with all details and links to other LIS Professional Associations within and out side the country. It is my personal request to all members of KALA to attend the meeting and give useful suggestions and elect competent Governing Body representing all sectors like Schools, Colleges, Engineering & Medical colleges, Universities, Institutions, Corporate Bodies, etc. It is my feeing that participation should be by all regions of Karnataka and also out of state and not just Bangalore based members. Yahoo rolls out SMS web search for mobiles

Yahoo has rolled out a new mobile search service that lets users in US send short text message queries and retrieve results from their mobile phones. BEIJING, July 8 -- Yahoo has rolled out a new mobile search service that lets users in US send short text message queries and retrieve results from their mobile phones. The new service, called SMS Short Message Service) Search, is designed to let people get specific information, such as weather, stock quotes and business addresses, and use shortcuts on the keypad to take less time for users to input their queries. For example, typing in "w" and the ZIP code will retrieve a short weather forecast, Yahoo said. The tool was announced Thursday. If the information sought is not included in the first set of results, users can request and receive additional input. People also can save the responses and reply to them repeatedly over time to get updates of the same information, such as stock quotes for a particular company. In addition, Yahoo also said that it was expanding its Yahoo Search on Mobile, which was previously available only on advanced phones such as the Treo. Now any Wireless Application Protocol-enabled phone, which includes most mobile phones with a color screen, can do Web searches. Last October, Google, the No. 1 Web search engine, launched its own service that let users use mobile phones or handheld devices to do Web searches using text messages, or short message service, which is also known as SMS. Unlike Google, however, once a user retrieves a reply from Yahoo's text message search service, they can refresh it without having to retype the query, said Thad White, who runs mobile services for Yahoo. That could be useful, he added, for retrieving the latest stock quote on a company. A summary of the details of this change follows. Why revise the ISBN standard? To increase the numbering capacity of the ISBN system (owing to the increase of electronic publications and the resulting proliferation of editions and formats). 1. To make the ISBN totally compatible with the EAN-13 used for other products and supply chains. 2.
