Economic Assessment of Library?

Friends, Library professionals have to face some common questions from the senior management. What is the usefulness of library? Does it still relevant in the age of google? People always doubt about its economic contribution made to the society and the organisation. They do not understand the hidden intellectual and economic contribution made by the library to its parent organisation and the society . They never give priority to library. And hence there is no economic freedom given to it. QUALITY IS LOST HERE. While some smart professionals keep the record ready to face such silly questions. Many professionals lack the skills (proper) to assess the usefulness of library from the economic point of view. I have come across a recently released report by the Seattle Public Library, 'The Seattle Public Library Central Library: Economic Benefit Assessment". This report assesses the impact of the New Central Library on Seattle's economy based on quantitative and qualitative analysis. I hope this report will benefit most of the professionals in assessing their library's economic contribution to society and the organisation. In praise of institutional repositories Richard Gallagher, Why We Need Institutional Repositories, The Scientist, October 10, 2005. Excerpt: Despite rapid explosion of knowledge in the life sciences, the full promise of digitization, storage and curation is nowhere close to being fully realized. The large-scale discipline-specific repositories that quickly became mainstream in information-intense branches such as genomics and proteomics are just the tip of the iceberg. The other seven-eighths comes in the shape of institutional repositories, such as MIT's DSpace, which provide the most comprehensive mechanism for digital preservation and dissemination. DSpace and other wide-ranging digital archives are truly transforming. They will house research data, journal articles, theses, teaching and learning materials, information for the general public, symposia and lectures, and informal accounts of life in the lab. While they are primarily being developed at universities, there is no reason why customized repositories shouldn't be introduced in other contexts, including industry....This new generation of institutional repositories does not compete with existing databases, it complements and extends them. At the same time, it reaffirms the position of an institution (in the case of a university) as a scholarly center and community hub.

Summary of the talk: St. Agnes College was established in the year 1921 and it is one of the leading women�s colleges in India and is known for imparting value-based education. The college is offering courses in arts, Science, commerce business management, and computer science. It also offers honors, diploma, certificate and other remedial courses. The college has been accorded �A� grade by NAAC in its assessment report. St. Agnes college information center is one of the pivotal centres for the college. Information center imparts formal and informal education indirectly through print and electronic media, advises the faculty in their scholarly pursuits. The information center helps the user community in curricular, co-curricular and extra curricular activities. Services are rendered to outsiders, faculty and students. It renders services like circulation, reference, CD-Rom, textual information service, reprography, newspaper clippings, index to articles of topics pertaining to different disciplines and other general topics, internet, scanning services and personal assistance to all the users. User education is imparted at the beginning of the year based on requirements of the users. The information center is putting its conscientious efforts to transform the readers from passive learners to voracious readers. Faculty members are requested to stimulate intellectual curiosity and imbibe self-learning skills among the students. The librarian has trained and motivated her staff members to synthesize technology and traditional print culture to ensure invaluable service to the user community. The information centre of the college has also organized a few workshops, seminars, exhibitions and image analysis events. Students asked a few questions on computerization, preparation required by library for NAAC assessment, method of stock verification, status of the librarians etc. Ms. B. Mail Alert facility : It is another feature of digital libraries, in this as soon any new journal arrives in the library, users get the mail alerts automatically, Basically users can set different types of alerts to be received e.g. Book overdue alert, Fine alert, New arrival alert, event alert, and many more, Mail alert facility can be used by Librarians also for tracking periodicals or due payments.
