Dear all, Of course i have not cleared any of these exams.I feel exemption for NET/SLET is not required. Based on the previous poor perform in academics the UGC has made this system which can inculcate the high standards in higher education system in india.Yes, there is no need to underestimate the candidates who posses M.Phil/PhD degrees in exceptional cases. As i observed in seven years experience in most of the sectors there is no frankly good treatment for library professionals as equal grades as employee in there respective parent organization?. So, couple of months back i noticed a mail from maharastra regarding this in this forum. As all of us know there are several universities in india offering distance education from Certificate course to Ph.d level in Library info. sc. do's any body will expect efficient practical knowledge in them about the profession?. Will there be any value for talented candidates? What will be the fate of profession status then?. Let it be there M.Phil and Ph.D after clearing this sort of NET/SLET (Agni Pariksha) only. If such exams are made mandatory. I feel there is respect for deserved candidates in all branches of knowledge. with regards. Date: Wed, 17 May 2006 18:00:11 +0530 From: Chandrima Roy <croy(a)docdelserv.com> Fine, it sounds great when we talk about free access of Journals. But there are lots of technical issues involved in online conversion of Journals, e.g. necessary format to decide - HTML, XML, SGML, etc., get them converted accordingly, data checking and proof reading, maintaining quality of images, pagination, necessary indexation of Journals, build a complete searchable platform for users,.a complete project. This also involves a cost, which someone has to bear. Hence, please justify the statement and let us understand who should bear the cost? Chandrima Roy Sukhdev Singh <mailto:lis-forum%40ncsi.iisc.ernet.in?Subject=%5BLIS-Forum%5D%20Open%20 source%20Journals%3F&In-Reply-To=20060516092439.55372.qmail%40web30715.m ail.mud.yahoo.com> esukhdev at gmail.com Tue May 16 16:14:14 IST 2006 You might be referring to "Open Access Journals" (Access instead of Source). There should not be any payment for accessing / downloading articles of Open Access Journals. At the most they can require free registration ["User Id" and "Password" ] just to collect some statistics or provide some value added services. [msg truncated]

by Sukhdev Singh 17 May '06

17 May '06

Is Internet evolving into a giant global digital library? If yes - then it is due to rise of the phenomena of Social Softwares / Web 2.0 / Library 2.0. < http://sukhdev.blogspot.com/2006/05/is-internet-evolving-into-digital.html > So, obviously Social Softwares will find place in LIS Curriculum sooner or latter. Such a curriculum has been suggestion in blog post: http://www.blogwithoutalibrary.net/?p=197 " --week 1-2: Introduction to social software --week 3-4: Blogs - introduction to terminology and software, hands-on, case studies, content, design, usability --weeks 5-6: RSS – technology, tools, hands-on, case studies --weeks 7: Wikis – technology, tools, hands-on, case studies --weeks 8-9: Social book marking, tagging & folksonomies – theory, tools, case studies --week 10: Online social networks: theory, case studies --weeks 11-12: Other social software tools, e.g.: Instant Messaging applications, Podcasting --week 13-14: best practices, discussion, evaluation" --Sukhdev Singh, NIC. http://openmed.nic.in

UGC lowers entry barrier for lecturers...News Item
by K Prakash 17 May '06

UGC lowers entry barrier for lecturers Vineeta Pandey Tuesday, May 16, 2006 22:50 IST Source:http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1029689&CatID=2 Taking away the standardised exam will help colleges fill up vacant teaching posts NEW DELHI: Succumbing to the pressure from the teaching community, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is on its way to getting rid of the National Eligibility Test (NET) requirement for those who hold M Phil and PhD degrees. The NET is the minimum requirement to get a job as a lecturer in universities and colleges. The NET was originally implemented to ensure uniformity, objectivity and merit in the selection process of university and college lecturers. Seventeen years later it is on its way out. The UGC has decided to allow PhDs and M Phils to teach postgraduates and under-graduates, respectively. However, those with just a post graduation degree would still need to clear the NET exam to be able to teach in university. At present, the requirements for becoming a lecturer include passing the NET and a minimum of 55 per cent marks in postgraduation. Those who have acquired a PhD degree before December 2002 are exempt from having a NET clearance, but all those who have completed a PhD after 2002 do need to clear NET. With a large number of doctorates failing to make it to the teaching profession due to not passing the NET, teachers’ unions and educators have raised objections against the system. Some have also accused UGC of interfering in the universities’ autonomy. While pointing to the flaws of the NET, Historian Sumit Sarkar had said the examination pattern does not suit research-oriented minds. The removal of the NET barrier would mean becoming lecture would be a much easier job. The weeding out process associated with the NET clearance has also been blamed for one of the reasons behind vacant teaching posts in universities and colleges across the country. Sources in Human Resources and Development Ministry said the shortage of quality faculty has been a governmental concern and the relief would help colleges easily fill the vacancies. The NET loosens National Eligibility Test (NET), the qualifying exam taken by those applying for a lectureship in colleges, will be scrapped for M Phil and PhD holders Those with a postgraduate degree must still take the NET In 2005, only 7500 qualified out of 1.75 lakh postgraduate students who took the NET The NET was meant to ensure uniformity, objectivity and merit in the selection process With best regards. Google Notebook
by Sukhdev Singh 16 May '06

16 May '06

Google Notebook is up now. It works - as I expected - like clipmarks but in a much cool manner. Moreover, Google Search Engine has been leveraged in a good fashion. Installation is very simple - you need a Google Account ( your gmail account will do ). In mine case as soon as I logged in, It asked for downloading a Firefox extension - which was done in seconds. Next time when Firefox was opened, it had a small Notebook icon towards the right bottom corner. Working with it is Simple - mark anything in your Firebox / Browser and click -> notebook icon -> Add Note. You are done. While searching with Google, it shows - "Note this" hypertext under each hit. < http://sukhdev.blogspot.com/2006/05/google-notebook-up.html > --Sukhdev Singh, NIC. http://openmed.nic.in
