Workshop on E-Resources and IPR issues

Dear All The Central Library, IIT Bombay has planned to organize a 3-days Training Workshop on e-Resources and IPR Issues on 14-16 May 2006. The main objective of the workshop is to expose participants to the relevance of IPR issues vis-a-vis usage of e-resources. Thanks to the success of the Consortia model of acquisition, libraries have been able to provide access to several thousands e-books and journals to their users without the constraints of space and time. While application of Information and Communication Technologies and Consortia approach have benefited large number of libraries and their users, it has added responsibilities to ensure that the usage is made within the framework of Intellectual Property Rights and the interests of the creators of information/knowledge are protected. Library and information professionals providing e-resources-based information services have important role to play in this area and this workshop will provide them with a broader view of the implications of IPR while discharging their responsibilities and serving their users. The important topics to be covered in the workshop include : 1.Overview of the state of art information communication technologies in the libraries, 2.e-journals, e-books, e-databases 3.Intellectual Property rights vis-a-vis e-resources 4.Vendors presentations 5.RFID Only 30-35 participants, on first-come-first-served basis, will be taken for the course from IITs, IISc, NITs, other engineering colleges, scientific and technical institutions. Preference will be given to those from INDEST/AICTE Consortium participating institutions. Interested persons may forward their application in the enclosed proforma by email / fax at the earliest to the Librarian, IIT Bombay. Two participants from the consortium participating institutes will be provided free registration. Other participants will be charged Rs 1000-/ as registration fee which includes workshop kit, hostel accommodation, working lunch, and tea/coffee during sessions. TA/DA will have to be borne by the participants or their sponsoring organizations. For Registration Fee concessions, applications must be forwarded thru thier parent organizations. Google released a 3D modelling software called SketchUp < http://sketchup.google.com/ >. It is available in both free and commercial versions. "With just a few simple tools, you can create 3D models of houses, sheds, decks, home additions, woodworking projects - even space ships. Apart from others things it highlights: --OA Librarian, oalibrarian.blogspot.com, "Open Access resources for librarians --The impact of open access on library and information science (a research project). It's a project proposal from Cheryl Knott Malone and Anita Coleman (both at the University of Arizona's School of Information Resources and Library Science). --College & Research Libraries will be freely available after a six-month embargo --A group of librarians, college administrators, and scholars issued a call to action to preserve online scholarly journals, noting that such journals "could vanish into oblivion should publishers go out of business or face other calamities." --On April 10, the Public Access Working Group (an advisory panel to NIH) reaffirmed its support for strengthening of the NIH public access policy, calling for the policy to be mandatory and for the maximum embargo to be six months. --Sukhdev Singh, NIC. http://openmed.nic.in

Excerpt: [O]ne of open education's most critical questions --how can open education's tools and resources demonstrably improve education quality?-- [is] rarely mentioned [at conferences on open education]....The main tenet of open education is to make educational assets freely available to the public. This is becoming easier and less expensive as network and multimedia technology evolves....But several obstacles may stand in the way of using these and other powerful tools and resources in ways that will actually improve the quality of education. First, although the tools and resources are readily available, transferring practical knowledge about how to use them is not easy.
