Copyright issues

Hello All, Could we have an open discussion on Copyright Laws in India...what constitutes a copyright violation? 1. Photocopying of books and keeping them for display and use in the library? 2. Scanning of books - say for using as a digital library? After all, these are not done for any commercial purpose, we do not sell them, they are for everyday use, especially when there is a huge demand for a particular book.....does this constitute a copyright violation? Can Academic Libraries not keep multiple copies of photocopies books which would really help the students? What about scanning books? Can books not be scanned and stored digitally? Have any of you tried these methods? Do they work? Are they legal? Can a library do such a thing? How do you handle situations when books are in great demand? Could you discuss these and other such related issues? Dear Professionals It is really sad to know about the demise of Prof. Bhattacharyya. I pay homage to the departed soul on behalf of DRTC batch (2002-2004). It is personally painful for me because I was one of the students of the last classes that he took at DRTC. It is shocking news to hear about sad demise of Prof. Ganesh Bhattacharya today morning. Prof. Bhattacharya, as all us know, was a scholar of great repute. His contributions to the field of indexing and cataloguing have drawn international attention. POPSI, an indexing method developed by him, has been considered as one of the important contributions to library and information science. He had associated with a few activities of Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore in the past. On behalf of my colleagues in the Department and myself I express my heartfelt condolences to the family members of Prof. Bhattacharya. I pray the almighty to rest his soul in peace. All of us cherish his professional contributions as a well-known LIS teacher, researcher, guide and above all a good human being. His contributions especially in the area of indexing are well-known. He never used to enter the class without prior preparations inspite of his vast experience at DRTC. I recall the proud words of Late Prof. MR Kumbar referring GB very often as "My Ganesh". Dear faculty members and researchers, Elsevier recently came up with the idea of sponsorship of articles by authors for 37 journals starting with 6 journals on nuclear physics. For the journals that offer this option, authors will have the choice of paying a fee to have their article available on ScienceDirect to non subscribers. Journals offering Sponsored Articles On May 24, 2006, six Elsevier nuclear physics journals started to state on their journal homepages that authors will have the option to make articles available to non-subscribers of ScienceDirect via Sponsored Articles. Similar statements will appear on thirty-one additional journals homepages in the next two months. How Sponsored Articles works In the selected 37 journals, authors have the option to make their articles available on ScienceDirect at no cost to any viewer. The author charge for article sponsorship is $3,000. Importantly, authors can only select this option after an article has been accepted. Authors can also choose not to exercise this option with the assurance that their article will continue to reach a wide audience of researchers through ScienceDirects large subscription base.
