How Web 2.0 technologies such as synchronous messaging and streaming media, blogs, wikis, social networks, tagging, RSS feeds, and mashups might intimate changes in how libraries provide access to their collections and user support for that access. The following article tries to explore it. http://www.webology.ir/2006/v3n2/a25.html --Sukhdev Singh, NIC. http://openmed.nic.in

OAI-compliance for legecy databases
by Francis Jayakanth 01 Aug '06

01 Aug '06

Increasing demands for access to distributed information from a single source requires that the distributed information systems are interoperable. Interoperability is the ability of multiple systems, with different hardware and software platforms, data structures, and interfaces, to exchange data with minimal loss of content and functionality (http://www.niso.org/standards/resources/UnderstandingMetadata.pdf) Interoperability facilitates in building federated systems, which serve as discovery tools for the end-users. With respect to interoperability of digital libraries (DL), the OAI-PMH (Open Access Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) is becoming a de facto standard. Popular institutional repository software like DSpace, GNU EPrints are OAI-compliant software. Many of the institutions / organizations are already maintaining their bibliographic data using software packages like CDS/ISIS (DOS and Windows versions), Libsys or other SQL-based RDBMS. Also, the institutions / organizations many not have the requisite wherewithal to set up and maintain software packages like DSpace or GNU EPrints. Now, the question is, if there is a need to make data contained in non-OAI-compliant systems interoperable, how does one go about? As part of the on-going DSIR funded project, 'Development of OAI-based Institutional Repository Services in India' at the National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), we are trying to address this issue. We would like to have some sample bibliographic data, may be around 100 records or so, from different software packages so that we can make use of such data for testing purposes. Please contact us off the list if you wish to share your sample data so that we can provide additional details for sending the sample data. Many thanks. Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2006 07:38:50 +0530 From: Subbiah Arunachalam <arun(a)mssrf.res.in> I reproduce below a news story - reporting on a recent study from Latin America - with the kind permission of Mr Abel Packer of BIREME/PAHO/WHO/SciELO. Anyone working in the area of comparing citation databases such as the Web of Science, Scopus and Scholar Google will find a goldmine in the work of Prof. Peter Jacso of the University of Hawaii. He has written many papers and made many presentations, all meticulously researched, and has shown that WoS continues to score over others in most respects. Prof. Jacso wrote a paper on this subject for Current Science about a year ago, when we brought out a special section in honour of Dr Eugene Garfield on his 80th birthday. I am sure people like Subir Sen, Dr A R D Prasad, Filbert Minj, Gunasekaran, Shahabuddin, Prabir Ghosh Dastidar, Sukhdev Singh, Dr D K Sahu and several others in India would like to do a similar study on citations to Indian papers as seen from different databases. Best wishes. Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2006 07:57:52 +0530 From: Subbiah Arunachalam <arun(a)mssrf.res.in> Friends: The provosts of 25 top American universities are jointly releasing an open letter that strongly backs the Federal Public Research Access Act bill and encourages higher education to prepare for a new way of disseminating research findings, reports Jennifer Heffelfinger, Communications Manager, SPARC [jennifer(a)arl.org] "Widespread public dissemination levels the economic playing field for researchers outside of well-funded universities and research centers and creates more opportunities for innovation. Ease of access and discovery also encourages use by scholars outside traditional disciplinary communities, thus encouraging imaginative and productive scholarly convergence," the provosts write. Subbiah Arunachalam
