Digital Economy -- what are we doing about it.
by Sukhdev Singh 15 Sep '06

15 Sep '06

Dear Friends, I hope most of you are aware of i2010 – A European Information Society for growth and employment" initiative. It was launched framework for addressing the main challenges and developments in the information society and media sectors up to 2010. It promotes an open and competitive digital economy and emphasises ICT as a driver of inclusion and quality of life. The initiative contains a range of EU policy instruments to encourage the development of the digital economy such as regulatory instruments, research and partnerships with stakeholders. On 13 September 2006 it launched a "Digital Libraries Initiative" Website. It starts explaining "What is the Digital Libraries Initiative" http://europa.eu.int/information_society/activities/digital_libraries/what_… This Digital Libraries Initiative is a flagship project of European Commission's overall strategy to boost the digital economy, the i2010 strategy. Friends, while other countries are talking about Digital Economy - I wonder what we in India are doing? --Sukhdev Singh, NIC.

Back issues of Royal Society journals on open access
by Subbiah Arunachalam 15 Sep '06

15 Sep '06

>From Prof. Peter Suber Temporary free access to Royal Society journals back to 1665 The Royal Society has finished digitizing all the back issues of all its journals back to 1665. To celebrate, it's offering free online access to the lot until December. See the RS announcement or The Register's news story. (Thanks to Matt Cockerill.) Normally I don't blog trial offers of free online access but I'm making an exception for this one. This window onto the history of science is extraordinary. ---- When will CSIR and other Indian journals digitize their back issues and give free access to them? Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust (and other Foundations) may support a programme of digitizing all back issues of scientific journals of the developing world and making them available via open access. Promise of Science
by Subbiah Arunachalam 14 Sep '06

Friends: The Dutch are indeed very progressive when it comes to sharing knowledge. The Dutch universities are doing well in terms of making available their refereed research papers through archives. Now they have come up with a repository for theses and dissertations, and on the day the repository was announced it already had 10,000 theses! This is an area we in India and other countries in the South could (shamelessly) imitate the Netherlands! Arun >From Peter Suber's blog "Open Access News" Dutch ETD repository launched The Dutch DARE project has launched Promise of Science, an an OA repository called for electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) in the Netherlands. Promise of Science covers all Dutch universities and on launch day (yesterday) already contained 10,000 Dutch ETDs. The site supports searching by keyword, author, institution, or year. For more details see the announcement. ___________________________________________________________ To help you stay safe and secure online, we've developed the all new Yahoo!
