Dear Friends, We are happy to inform that a draft Manual for Creation of Digital Archives has been put at http://www.kilaonline.org/html/library.htm to seek your response on its deformities such as grammatical/spelling mistakes, lack of clarity in expression, conceptual mistakes etc. so as to enable us to bring out the final copy without errors. The manual deals with creation of digital library equivalent archives with Winisis, GenisisWeb & GenisisCD, for less resourceful libraries in the developing countries. We have plan to add an annexure to the manual explaining the advance features of the Genisis software.Kindly inform us such innovative experiment you had done with Genisis so that we can add them to the new annexure. A web page containing links to the download sites of the software (winisis, genisis & apache) required for digital archiving of this sort will also be launched in our site for easier and convenient download by new user soon. Sad Demise of Prof. N.B. Pangannaya
by N.S. Harinarayana 02 Oct '06

02 Oct '06

Here is my tribute to my beloved teacher Prof. N. Balakrishna Pangannaya who died due to multiple organ failure on October 1, 2006. He was quite active and had no sign of any illness. He attended to the professional work at his office at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) even on the Friday, September 29, 2006. It is evident that he was contributing richly to the good cause of the profession till his last breath. NBP, as was called fondly by his students, was a teacher par-excellence. Like many of his students, his teachings have a great influence on my professional careers. What I like most in his teachings is his discussions on any topic based on logic and practical utility. He had excellent command over language and the subject. He had the ability to teach any difficult topic with great ease and make even the average students to understand the essence of the topic. His discourse on Information Processing and Retrieval (IPR) still rings in my ears. Prof. Pangannaya is one of the main pillars on which Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore was built. He served the Department for more than three decades. He joined the Department as Lecturer in early 1970s and retired in 2000. For a brief term in-between he served Mangalore University as librarian. I had the fortune of associating myself with him in developing self instructional materials (SIM) for BLISc and MLISc programs of KSOU. He had undergone severe stress during the process of developing the course. In fact, SIM development of MLISc course is half through and he was trying his best to complete the assignment by December this year. It goes to his credit that he alone, single handedly, was able to coordinate the design and development of SIMs both in English and Kannada for BLISc in a record time of just one and half years. It may be noted here this achievement is a record of its kind in KSOU. No other Department was able to develop the SIMs in both the languages. His contributions were recognized and acknowledged by Prof. Sudha Rao, the present Vice Chancellor of KSOU in her key note address during the MLISc contact program held recently. The Department of Library and Information Science has organized a condolence meeting on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at 4 PM. It will be attended by his students and colleagues in and around Mysore. If you want to send your condolences it may be sent to me before 3 PM. I will pass on your message to the concerned for reading them during the meeting. I pray the Almighty to rest Prof. N.B. Pangannaya's soul in eternal peace. -- N.S. Harinarayana, Ph.D Department of Library and Information Science University of Mysore, Manasagangtori Mysore 570 006 Off. Open course ware in higher education
by Subbiah Arunachalam 02 Oct '06

02 Oct '06

Dear Prof. Vijay Kumar: Here is one more item from Peter Suber's blog. Openness in higher ed The October/November issue of Innovate is devoted to open source and open courseware in higher education. Although none of the articles focuses on OA to research literature, David Wiley has a section on it in his piece, Open Source, Openness, and Higher Education. How do we persuade Indian universities to make their courses available via open access course ware? They can make available not only textual material but also video of lectures as the University of california in Berkeley is doing. Best wishes. open course ware

Dear Prof. Vijay Kumar: Here are two items of interest from Prof. Peter Suber's blog. Arun More on PLoS ONE and Philica Alicia Chang, Online journals challenge scientific peer review, Mercury News, October 1, 2006. A glimpse at PLoS ONE and Philica, focusing more on their methods of peer review than on their access policies. New portal of open courses Open-Of-Course is a new portal for open courses. Since its launch in July 2006, it has posted 18 courses, some of them in more than one language. From the site: Here you will find a growing amount of free online courses and tutorials. By "free" we not only mean free as in "free beer" but also published as open content. Our focus is at the start mainly on open source software courses but as we grow more will be added. Our goal is to create a multilingual platform for free quality educational information. You can help realize this in several ways: * Tip us on free available courses and tutorials on the internet * Become a coordinator for your language section * Add free online courses or tutorials to our platform * Translate available courses into other languages... ___________________________________________________________ All new Yahoo!
