Google has introduced a new search service -- strictly for computer programmers only. Google Code Search, a site that simplifies how software developers search for programming code to improve existing software or create new programs. IL empowers people in all walks of life to seek, evaluate, use and create information effectively to achieve their personal, social, occupational and educational goals. It is a basic human right in a digital world and promotes social inclusion in all nations. Information literacy enables people to interpret and make informed judgments as users of information sources, as well as to become producers of information in their own right. Information literate people are able to access information about their health, environment, education, work and empowering them to make critical decisions about their lives (portal.unesco.org) Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals have the task of handling the information explosion and deliver the right kind of information services to the right users. LIS professionals are expected to guide the users for using the right information to develop the skill of users. IL facilitates to seek and evaluate right sources of information and acquire it. This workshop is designed for special educators and LIS professionals working in special institutions for the disabled people covering all major aspects of IL Competency Development. Hence this workshop will enable the delegates to provide better services to the disabled persons in their institutions. Objectives of the Workshop: â¢ To give awareness and overview about IL, its needs and uses, ICT, IL models and standards to LIS professionals working in special institutions for the disabled people. â¢ To facilitate LIS professionals and special educators to provide better information services to the disabled people â¢ To give an overview about the right to information act and freedom of information â¢ To develop IL programs for the disabled people. Sad Demise of Prof Pangannayya

Dear Professionals, Dakshina Kannada and kodagu Library Association mourns the sad demise of Prof. N.B. Pangannayya. He served Department of LIS, University of Mysore for more than Thirty years and also served for the Mangalore University as University Librarian. For the last few years he worked very hard to prepare course material for LIS of Karnataka State Open University as well organised contact programs and he was widely travelled man. We have lost an efficient humble and kind hearted man in the profession. May his soul rest in peace. DR. Dear professionals I myself astonished and shocked after hearing sad demise of Prof. N.B. Pangannayya. He was noble person and helped especially to BLISc and MLISc. Students in organiising contact programmes at his age actively like young person answering all the queries smoothly. It is really great loss for the Library department of KSOU. He visited our M.S. RAMAIAH INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT on26th September 2006 for MLISc Contact programme to be conducted during October/Novemember2006 at MSRIM,Bangalore. I would like to react to the following lines. We would be cutting our own roots if we keep on ignoring the warning signals expressed in blogs of common citizens. We can level them insane - but let me stress again here - Perception is more important than the product. For example look at the perception of a citizen of Lawrence: "Libraries are limited, obsolete" <http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2006/oct/02/libraries_are_limited_obsolete/> "As a long-time resident of Lawrence, and one who has devoted his entire life to education, I have followed the debate concerning a new library for Lawrence with great interest. As a parent of three students, two in college and one teenager at Southwest Junior High, I have witnessed a stunning transformation in the way kids access and use information technology. All that I see as a parent reinforces what I see at work every day" He continues - 1. Libraries are inefficient. 2. Libraries are limited. 3. Libraries are obsolete. "...ask yourself a few questions. When was the last time you were at the library? When was the last time you logged on? Why is that?..." On the other hand people like Michael Stephens, who is technology and web 2.0 savvy and promoting the concept of Library 2.0 are defending the role that libraries could play in the online scenario. He has Ten points in his argument: -Libraries are not going away. -Online Social Libraries Build Community -Libraries do need to focus on emerging trends, tech or otherwise, to be nimble and viable -Libraries need better marketing strategies and a re-invigoration of the brand -Technology changes, but libraries don't -Libraries will benefit from the next wave of MLIS grads -Libraries need to serve all users and offer them materials and access of their liking -Librarians can be guides, counselors and teachers -Libraries need to share their stories -It's up to us I do agree with him that ultimately "IT'S UP TO US" whether we sense an opportunity in the next generation libraries or keep feeling insecure and get extinct.
