Institute of Health Management Research in assocaition with SALIS -Delhi NCR is organising a National Workshop on "Building Digital Libraries Using GSDL and DSpace on 14th and 15th of March, 2008 at Institute of health Management Research, Sanganer Airport, Jaipur. The details of the workshop is as under:- About the Workshop The purpose of the Workshop is to provide overview of the two major international open source software-GSDL and Dspace and also to give practical training to the participants to build digital library collections. The Workshop will facilitate interaction between experts and the participants in order to bridge the knowledge gaps and initiate capacity building activities The deliberations of the experts - and subsequent discussions - during and after the workshop will help develop a road map for the digitization of libraries. Objectives of the workshop The major objective of the proposed Workshop is to provide § Overview of the Metadata Standards § Overview of the open Archives Initiatives § A first hand knowledge of the GSDL and Dspace § Training in Building digital Library Collection § Training to Build Institutional Repositories/ Archives Greenstone Digital Library Software (GSDL) GSDL is open source software used for building and distributing digital library collection. The aim of the Greenstone software is to empower users, particularly in universities, libraries, and other public service institutions, to build their own digital libraries. It provides a new way of organizing information and publishing it on the internet or on CD-Rom. GSDL is produced by the New Zealand Digital Library project at the University of Waikato and developed and distributed in corporation with UNESCO and the human Info NGO. DSapce Dsapce is a digital library software used to capture store, index p[reserve and redistribute the digital library materials. Research institutions worldwide use the Dspace as an institutional repository, a learning object repository for records management and more. Dspace is freely available software and it can be customized to suit our needs. It is a joint project of the MIT (USA) libraries and HP Labs. The DSpace application can recognize and manage a large number of file format and mime types. Coverage § Digital Library § Digitization and OCR § Metadata Standards § Dublin Core § Overview of Open Access Archives and OAI-PMH § Institutional Repositories/Archives Methodology § Lectures § Presentations § Demonstration § Hands on Practice Impact of the Workshop Knowledge Managers and the Information Scientists of the various participating institutes shall be in a position to re-organize and modernize their library after the workshop since each one of them shall be acquainted with the latest techniques. They shall also be in a position to interact with the experts later, having developed a personal reputation during the workshop. This process will directly help our academic system and the faculty members, students and scholars. This workshop will be organized under the guidance of eminent professionals. The workshop will enhance the intellectual output of the participating organizations. Target Participants Approximately 50 selected Library and Information Science Professionals, Academicians, IT Professionals, Research Scholars, and Students are likely to attend the workshop. Dates 14th and 15th of March, 2008 (Friday and Saturday) Venue Institute of Health Management Research, Sanganer Airport, Jaipur. Duration: Duration of the workshop shall be for two days. Registration Fee: Rs. 500.00 from each participant. However, 20% concession will be given to more than one participant from the same organization. New Delhi: Ess Ess Publications, 2008. 766p. Rs. 1675.00 The book provides around 15,000 readymade class numbers relating to Indian subjects and English language and literature. It has covered four Indic religions, namely Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism. For each of these religions class numbers have been provided for more than two hundred subdivisions. The class numbers for around fifty subdivisions of each of the important South Asian languages like Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Sinhalese, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu have been provided. Of the 53% of US adults who said they visited a library in 2007, the biggest users were young adults aged 18 to 30 in the tech-loving group known as Generation Y, the survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project said. "These findings turn our thinking about libraries upside down," said Leigh Estabrook, a professor emerita at the University of Illinois and co-author of a report on the survey results. "Internet use seems to create an information hunger and it is information-savvy young people who are most likely to visit libraries," she said. Internet users were more than twice as likely to patronise libraries as non-internet users, according to the survey. More than two-thirds of library visitors in all age groups said they used computers while at the library. Sixty-five per cent of them looked up information on the internet while 62% used computers to check into the library's resources. Public libraries now offer virtual homework help, special gaming software programs, and some librarians even have created characters in the Second Life virtual world, Estabrook said. Libraries also remain a community hub or gathering place in many neighbourhoods, she said. The survey showed 62% of Generation Y respondents said they visited a public library in the past year, with a steady decline in usage according to age. Some 57% of adults aged 43 to 52 said they visited a library in 2007, followed by 46% of adults aged 53 to 61; 42% of adults aged 62 to 71; and just 32% of adults over 72. "We were surprised by these findings, particularly in relation to Generation Y," said Lee Rainie, co-author of the study and director of the Pew project. In 1996 a survey by the Benton Foundation found young adults saw libraries becoming less relevant in the future. "Scroll forward 10 years and their younger brothers and sisters are now the most avid library users," Rainie said. The survey of 2,796 Americans was conducted by telephone from late June through early September and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. It was funded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, an agency that offers federal support for US libraries and museums.
