UNESCO's IFAP to measure Information Literacy 16-04-2008 (Paris) UNESCO's Information for All Programme (IFAP) releases a paper providing a basic conceptual framework for measuring information literacy. Entitled Towards Information Literacy Indicators, the publication includes a definition of information literacy; a model that links information literacy with other adult competences, such as ICT skills; and a description of information literacy standards in education. While recognising the considerable effort being invested by many international organizations in "measuring the information society", UNESCO's IFAP aims to identify additional indicators to measure the development of knowledge societies. Measurements of knowledge societies focus more on people and government priorities than on the information itself or the information technologies. They focus more on the impact of information on societies than on access to information, for example. Information literacy is part of an integrated set of skills which adults need to be effective in all aspects of their lives. As derived from the Alexandria Proclamation of 2005, information literacy is the capacity of people to: * recognise their information needs; * locate and evaluate the quality of information; * store and retrieve information; * make effective and ethical use of information, and * apply information to create and communicate knowledge. The development of indicators of information literacy is a priority at both national and international levels. Information literacy underpins many of the Millennium Development Goals, for instance, combating diseases and enhancing employment opportunities. Indicators of information literacy can help countries to identify the effect of policies to foster information literacy development and to know the extent to which their citizens are able to participate in a knowledge society. This is why UNESCO, through its Information for All Programme, decided to engage in the development of an international framework for measuring information literacy through which achievements at both international and national levels can be demonstrated and future efforts can be better focused. Workshop on DSpace May 9 - 11, 2008 Organized by Department of Library & Information Science, Osmania University, Hyderabad in collaboration with Academy of Library Science & Documentation (ALSD) About the Workshop: The present day libraries are extensively using Information Technology for information management. As part of storage and access to digital information, the libraries are developing their own digital libraries / institutional digital repositories. There are number of free software available for developing digital libraries and Dspace (http://www.dspace.org) is one of the most popular software developed jointly by MIT Libraries and HP labs. DSpace is a digital asset management system. It helps to create, index and retrieve various forms of digital content. Dspace has built-in Interoperability between the systems and adheres to international standards for metadata. This workshop is planned to meet the growing demand for Developing Digital Libraries. As DSpace is open source software and it had become popular due to its increased use by the LIS professionals. The workshop is aimed to support growing needs for learning software which can be useful to build institutional digital libraries and repositories. Dspace being one of the most popular having number of facilities, the workshop is being organized to enable the LIS professionals to start building their own repository. About DSpace: Dspace is an open source software and is freely downloadable from http://www.dspace.org Submission facility allows scientists and researchers to upload digital documents from anywhere in the world Workflow feature allows moderation of the submitted documents. Uses persistent handles. Conforms to the standards like Dublin Core and OAI-PMH v.2.0. Security can be built at various levels to effect restricted access.
