Openmed of NIC is at 111, Indian Institute of Astrophysics is at 228 and National Institute of Oceanography is at 231. Congratulations to the people behind these four repositories. Dear Friends, Kerala Library Association (www.kearlalibraryassociation.org) is organising a National Seminar on "Redefining the Role of Public Libraries in India: the Knowledge Society Imperatives during 6-8 August 2008 at Thiruvavthapuram. About KLA Kerala Library Association, the Premier Professional society in the library and information system (LIS) domain of this region was founded in 1971,by formally registering under the societies registration act. With the strength of more than 800 Professionally qualified members on its fold, and having four regional centers at Kottayam,Ernakulum ,Thrissur and Kozhikode,KLA has been able to outreach all categories of libraries and LIS professionals across the state.The association has been contributing significantly to the scientific management and quality improvement of LIS in kerala, in addition to providing valid inputs to the policy making processes, particularly in the public Library and Academic Library Systems of the region. As part of the continuing education programmes,KLA has organized scores of Training Courses, Workshops, Seminars& Conferences ,Invited Lectures,Discussions,Debates etc.The National Seminars held on School Libraries (1998) and on the Libraries of Higher Education Sector(2005) brought laurels to KLA. With a sense of pride and satisfaction ,KLA is now organizing the three day National seminar on Redefining the Role of Public Libraries in India: the Knowledge Society Imperatives. The seminar is expected to equip and enable all the stakeholders of public library set up to work for an immensely potential area of activity with tremendous societal impact. Objectives · To critically evaluate the status of the public library set up in India and examine how far they fulfill the roles bestowed on them. · To apprise the professionals and the authorities alike for the need of change. · To discuss the modalities of the desired changes in the public library system in India and to ensure the feel of its impact in our society. · To formulate an action plan for the reorientation, reengineering and rejuvenation of the facilities and services in the upcoming scenario. Regional Training & Workshop on Building of Institutional Archives & Digital Libraries, 24-27 June 2008. A Joint Collaboration of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) & Sikkim-Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT)- will be held at SMIT Campus at Majitar, Rangpo, East Sikkim. LIS Professionals/Students can only participate in this Training programme. Installation of OpenBiblio using EasyPHP

Dear Friends, I have created manual to install OpenBiblio in windows. OpenBiblio is an easy to use, automated library system written in PHP licensed under GNU General Public License (GPL). It has essential functional modules like OPAC, circulation, cataloging, and staff administration only, therefore suitable for the automation of libraries with small collection. Features of OpenBiblio are easy installation procedures, simple and neat user interface. It supports MARC importing and advanced features are still under development. ITU issues WSIS Stocktaking Report 2008 Geneva, 23 May 2008 The WSIS Stocktaking 2008 Report, an effective tool for fostering development of the information society, was released today. This Report is an update on the activities undertaken by governments, business, civil society and other organizations aimed at the achievement of the objectives and targets of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) from end 2005 until mid 2008. The World Summit on the Information Society was held in two phases, in Geneva in December 2003 and in Tunis in November 2005. Over 50 Heads of State and Government attended each of the two Summits and committed to building a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented Information Society. This stocktaking process, initiated by the WSIS Executive Secretariat in October 2004 and launched in Tunis in 2005, provides an inventory of activities and tracks progress on the implementation of the goals of the Summit. The Report was prepared through a consultative process with all stakeholders by placing the draft report for comments on the WSIS stocktaking website. The system is publicly accessible and presents information on WSIS-related initiatives and projects. See www.itu.int/wsis/stocktaking. It is possible to search for information within the database by WSIS action line, project, keyword, geographical location and other specifications. Governments submitted 3812 activities, representing 54 per cent of the total number of submissions. International organizations were second, with 29 per cent, followed by businesses, civil society entities and others. Some 44 per cent of activities submitted had been carried out at the national level, while 30 per cent were of an international nature. This report was issued during the annual WSIS follow up meetings which are held in a ten-day cluster of events in Geneva, Switzerland around World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, which marks the foundation of ITU on 17 May, 1865.
