Reality Check- Monster.com Add
by Emmanuel E C (RBEI/HRL1-D-KCI) 10 Jul '08

Dear All, I understand the pain behind seeing our own image being wrongly portrayed/represented or damaged by some one. Let us take it bit lighter and laugh for a while on being "Librarywalas" as shown in the add,it is really cute. First of all we need to develop tolerance and understand why we are wrongly portrayed/criticised/mocked at. Criticism or some one telling something about us should help to introspect our self and check whether the criticism/comments are valid, if they are valid then we need to change our self. If it is not valid then forget it, as it shows the level of the person who made that comment/showed something wrongly. But at the same time I feel this is the high time to do reality check. Let us recall our own experiences with Library/Library staffs in different environment (Academic library /Public library/Special) the way they behaved with us when we had been to them as user? how user friendly they were? In what way they supported users in finding the information on net/journal or book on self ? The user who passes through such experience may develop a kind of unfriendly attitude towards library/library professionals and when get a chance they show such things or express them. At the same time I am not generalizing it, as generation by generation Library professionals are changing themselves and becoming more customer/user focused , dynamic and developing multiple skills which are required for the survival of self and Profession. I also accept some of our friends suggestion on protesting but today is monster.com and tomorrow someone else will give one more add and with how many people you will protest? Can this protest changes the thinking of the people or our image in the society? But one thing can change our image in the society that is "changing ourselves" and becoming more dynamic, customer focused, user-friendly and more knowledgeable persons. Friends let us together move towards building right image in the eyes of users by: 1. Having self esteem. 2. Loving our profession( be comfortable with being a librarian). 3. Learning one new skill every quarter (once in three months). 4. Forming associations at local levels and sharing our experiences & knowledge with fellow professionals & linking these local associations with state & National Level associations. 5. Creating our visibility in the organization where we work. 6. Along with library activity let us involve in Knowledge Management initiatives, Open Access initiatives, education fair, book fair etc. 7. Learning more about e-resources & sharing such knowledge with fellow professionals. 8. Publish some newsletters relevant to your parent organization (electronic/Print-newsletters). 9. Do user surveys to check what user community feel about your services & about librarian. 10.Impress/influence on the mind of your organizational Heads about importance of information and how you can support them with the required information. 11.Learn more about customer relationship as we all learned a lot about technical aspects of library but forgot the user. Together we can make a difference !! Regards Emmanuel -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Open archives — the alternative to open access
by Sukhdev Singh 10 Jul '08

10 Jul '08

Dear Friends, Check out the following link where Padmanabhan Balaram, director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, India tells K. S. Jayaraman why he favours 'open archives' as the way forward for scientific publishing. http://www.scidev.net/en/features/open-archives-the-alternative-to-open-acc… An extract: -- Why is scientific publishing becoming such a contentious area? "The reason is simple. Much research in countries such as India is publicly-funded. Scientists do the research work and then publish their findings. But journals use these papers to make money. The real question is: do the commercial publishers give enough back to the community that keeps them going?" ... --How is the debate going? "The main debate is between publishers and committed open access advocates. The people who should be really concerned — the working scientists — form a huge silent majority. They either have no view or choose not to engage in the controversy." .. --Sukhdev Singh, NIC. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

British Library has a Flickr Group on Ramayana
by Sukhdev Singh 10 Jul '08

10 Jul '08

Dear Friends Famous Libraries of the World (including LC) are choosing Flickr to post and share Photos on web. Here is an interesting example by British Library. The British Library (see its Flickr Profile - http://www.flickr.com/people/britishlibrary/ ) has a group on Flickr for Ramayana <http://www.flickr.com/groups/706670@N20/> . Photos / images submitted to this Flickr Group could appear in their gallery in London and on their Library's website, under the section - Ramayana: Love and Valour in India's Great Epic. <http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/whatson/exhibitions/ramayana/index.html> Isn't this is innovative thinking? Do our libraries think in this way? Or do we think that sites like Flickr, Orkut, Second Live etc are too disruptive for Library Users? --Sukhdev Singh, NIC. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

New initiative in nation building by eradicating illiteracy through "Teach India Mission" by TOI
by Naveen M 10 Jul '08

10 Jul '08

Dear Members Please read the the mail and fallow the link for a new initiative .... Teach India is a nation-building initiative (or social initiative) from the Times of India that brings together children in need of education and people who can contribute a little time towards teaching them. It is based on one simple principle: If you have the desire to teach, Teach india will put you in touch with underprivileged children who are willing to learn. With over sixty of India's committed NGOs, corporates, schools and social organizations already supporting Teach India cause, we now look for selfless individuals to come forward and help change the future of a child forever, by giving just a few hours a week to Teach India. The idea of Teach India has struck an instant chord, with more than 10,000 people signing up to pledge at least two hours a week to teach a child in their neighbourhood, mostly for weekend sessions. This army of volunteers is a multi-lingual, multi-talented one drawn from diverse streams - doctors, lawyers, company executives, educationists, actors, businessmen, housewives, writers, artists, retired folk, government employees and, most heartrendingly, college students. In the words of one of the country's leading businessmen who has volunteered to teach , "This is the best thing a newspaper in India has ever done. The Times of India should be proud of itself. This mission also have the volunteer partnership of numerous NGOs, schools and companies such as Hindustan Lever, Aditya Birla Group, Nokia, Wipro, Reliance Communications, Barclays and Amex. The companies have come on board with the promise that at least 50 employees will commit two hours a week on company time to teaching. We believe this enlightened HR decision will raise the spirit of the workplace and give employees a greater meaning in life. Who knows, teaching a sassy street child his sums could turn out to be far more entertaining and satisfying than making yet another PowerPoint presentation. The highest response has come from the capital city, Delhi, followed closely by Mumbai, and then by Chennai and Kolkata. There have been numerous inquiries from readers in our other 10 editions asking why Teach India has been limited to the four metros. The reason is entirely practical, namely, the complicated logistics required to match volunteer and child, a process which though seemingly simple, needs a great deal of back-end effort. India is having a population of over 287 million illiterate Indians, It's a responsibility of every educated Indian to teach at least one student lets motivate ourselves and others lets support this mission to complete. ----- Forwarded Message ---- From: Stevan Harnad <amsciforum(a)GMAIL.COM> To: AMERICAN-SCIENTIST-OPEN-ACCESS-FORUM(a)LISTSERVER.SIGMAXI.ORG Sent: Wednesday, 9 July, 2008 8:04:49 AM Subject: Batch Deposits in Institutional Repositories (the SWORD protocol) In the context of Nature's just-announced offer to do proxy deposits for its authors, Peter Suber has asked Les Carr of EPrints to comment on whether the software has the capability of downloading and uploading deposits automatically, in batch mode, rather than just singly, with the keystrokes done by hand. Les Carr's reply is affirmative: "Both EPrints and DSpace allow batch uploads, but more to the point, both of them support the new SWORD protocol for making automatic deposits in repositories. We (the SWORD developers) very much hope that we will be able to work with established discipline [i.e., central] repositories to allow automatic feed through of deposits from Institutional Repositories into Discipline Repositories and vice versa": http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/repositories/digirep/index/SWORD __________________________________________________________ Not happy with your email address?.
