International Conference on Academic Libraries 2009 (ICAL 2009) Venue: Conference Centre, University of Delhi, India Dates: 5-8 October 2009 Organized by: University of Delhi Introduction The International Conference on Academic Libraries is being organized to come up with a vision for next generation academic libraries in order to meet the challenge of knowledge society, in giving the country a competitive edge in knowledge economy. The conference will provide an international platform to all stakeholders to address all issues of importance to academic libraries, discuss and debate roles that academic libraries can play in the higher education system in developed and developing countries with particular reference to India by 2020.The scope of the conference will be: knowledge sharing, ICT management, digital repository management, e-teaching, e-tutorials, stronger library-faculty relationships, and user centric services. The conference will provide an opportunity to identify the strengths and gaps in the academic library system, and to suggest new management models, mechanisms, policies, and national and international programmes for reshaping academic libraries into next generation libraries for the higher education.. Scope of the Conference: Knowledge Sharing, ICT Management, Digital Repository, E-Teaching, E-Tutorials, Library-Faculty Relationships and User-centric Services CALL FOR PAPERS: Papers are invited on the following major themes authors are advised to read the document "conceptual framework" at http://library.du.ac.in/ocs/icaldocs/conceptual document1.pdf Authors are requested to submit their proposals which reflects Case Studies; State of the Art; Review Papers; Specific Proposals; Current Trends etc. Theme 1: Vision & Roles of the Future academic libraries Theme 2: Technology, Policy and Innovation Theme 3: Change Management Theme 4: Library Vendor/ Publisher Interface Theme 5: Management Models and Framework, Library Services Theme 6: Advocacy The conference will maintain its proceedings of high standard and hence would evaluate each and every paper in accordance with the international standards. Hence, all stakeholders who would like to participate in the conference by contributing their valuable knowledge are advised to go through the Conceptual Framework to understand the thrust areas on which the conference intends to deliberate and accordingly make a choice of the relevant theme. Note on How the Papers Will be Handled: The Conference intends to handle the entire academic exercise by inviting experts to deliver the keynote address on each day in Plenary Sessions followed by invitation to authors to present their paper in each session. We intend to conduct the poster sessions based on the themes of each day. The Poster Session has been introduced with a view to provide maximum opportunity to authors for maximum one-to-one interaction. Each session including the Poster Sessions will have an expert reviewer who will analyze the Proceedings of the session and report back to Central Committee to frame the necessary recommendations. The recommendations ultimately will be developed into a Road Map for submission to all stakeholders by which the academic libraries will have their future. Dear All, The Unesco document "Libraries for all : how to start a basic library", brought to our notice by Dr Indira, is an excellent practical guide to be taught in our library schools in the beginning so as to give the students a holistic overview of the tasks ahead in the library profession. The list of options in decision-making, the practical hints on whereabouts and the logical sequencing of the sub topics make this document a good entry point for a new student of Library Science. Call for Participation – "Young ESD Voices from around the World" Background >From 31 March to 2 April 2009, the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development – Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade will be held in Bonn, Germany. Organizers of the conference are UNESCO and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, in cooperation with the German Commission for UNESCO. Five years into the Decade, the conference will follow four objectives: to highlight the relevance of ESD to all of education; to promote international exchange on ESD, especially between the North and the South; to carry out a stock-taking of the implementation of the UN Decade and to develop strategies for the way ahead. World Conference participants are 700 representatives from all world regions, of UNESCO Member States, United Nations Agencies, organizations from civil society, and the private sector. Workshop "Young ESD Voices from around the World" One day before the opening of the World Conference, a workshop with 25 young people from around the world with demonstrated engagement in Education for Sustainable Development will take place in Bonn, Germany. Participants of the workshop will also take part in the World Conference. Workshop results will be presented at the Conference. Young people between 18 and 35 years of age are invited to submit applications for participating in the workshop "Young ESD Voices from around the World" and in the World Conference itself by 9 February 2009. Applications must include a letter of motivation (one page) describing the applicants' engagement in Education for Sustainable Development, the motivation for applying and a short description of what is intended to be done as follow-up to the Conference. Moreover, a curriculum vitae should be submitted. Participants will be selected according to their engagement in ESD, their involvement in relevant networks and hence their function as young ESD ambassadors / multipliers.
