*Dear All* *We are happy to inform that the Vidya Prasarak Mandal, Thane (Maharashtra) has inaugurated the project of* BIBLIOGRAPHIC UNION DATABASE OF PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN KONKAN AREA The Union Catalogue website www.granthalaya.org has been inaugurated on 26th January 2009 . All the professionals are requested to visit the site and give feedback. In this project VPM,Thane intends to create bibliographic union database of holdings of all the public libraries in Konkan area including Thane. After completion of it, one would be in a position to know about the availability and location of the books in public libraries of Konkan area. 2009 Emerald Research Fund Awards Indian LIS category ________________________________ Call for Indian library and information science research proposals Sustaining the dissemination of knowledge in India by supporting LIS research Emerald is proud to announce it is offering a funding grant for a research project that will contribute to the development of LIS research in India. The funding grant of up to £2,000 (approx. US$3,000 equivalent) should address the dissemination of knowledge for the social good with a specific focus towards the benefit of India. In addition to the research grant, the winner will have the opportunity to receive the assistance of an experienced Emerald editor, or former editor, to help them write a high quality article and increase chances of publication. Eligibility The lead member of the research team should be based in India. Judging criteria Each application will be judged, by a panel of experts, on the five criteria below. The research must: * Be of significance, particularly illustrating how it will benefit the social good. * Demonstrate originality and innovation. * Make an outstanding contribution to theory and its application. * Illustrate the appropriateness and application of the methodology. * Demonstrate sound implications for theory and practice. Application requirements Each proposal must be submitted using our online application form <http://ww2.emeraldinsight.com/awards/india_lis.htm> . The following documents will be required electronically: 1. A summary stating specific goals, outcomes and benefits of the research. This should not exceed 2,000 words (note that tables, figures, appendices and reference lists, if provided, do NOT count to the 2,000 word total). 2. A covering letter containing contact details for all researchers involved in the project. Please state clearly which researcher will be the main point of contact. The 2,000-word summary must: * Clearly display a statement of purpose and intent. * Clearly state the methodology(ies) applied and explicitly describe the research process. * State expected research outcomes, expected impact and possible application. * Specify the expected timescales of the research process. * Outline projected costs and total research grant required. Key dates * The closing date for applications is 1 July 2009 * The initial short-list will be completed by August 2009. * Winners will be announced in early September 2009. Dear All, We are planning to implement RFID based Library Automation in a Bethlahem Engineering College, Nagercovil. I would like to get inputs from those who have already implemented the same. We prefer UHF tags and readers since long read range can be achieved and cheaper than HF tags. Has anyone used UHF based RFID system in Libraries? What's the success rate? Dear Professionals, Project Information Literacy (PIL) is a National Research Study by the Information School, University of Washington. This project aims at furthering the study of Information Literacy. PIL Progress Report is released, with the title "Finding Context: What Today's College Students Say about Conducting Research in the Digital Age". The Progress Report concludes, "Research seems to be far more difficult to conduct in the digital age than it did in previous times". According to Alison J. Head, Ph.D. and Michael B. Eisenberg (Co-directors), PIL Progress Report shares "some of the perceptions that led to this conclusion and several of the trends in problem-solving strategies that have emerged. The findings and analysis presented here should not be viewed as complete, but rather as part of our ongoing research that will be explored further and tested more rigorously". Though this project is US-based, hope it will serve as a reference resource for Information Literacy initiatives across the Globe.
