Rajashekar as a current awareness tool for improving professional knowledge and competence of LIS professionals in India. emoluments offered to library professionals

We read many advertisement for vacancy on various posts. What I feel is that emoluments offered to library professionals particularly in *private institutions* are much less as compared to the people of same calibre working in other professions. One more thing I would like to share, in India if want to apply for any higher designations we have been always asked to prove our credentials in terms of percentage of marks in MLIS, BLIS, and through UGCNet etc. But if we try to find out our employability in any international institutions what I have observed that most of the nicely paid jobs require a software engineer or people trained in specific fields of computer science profession as most of the work is handled by software. Is this indicate that this is the time when we need a drastic change in our curriculum? And requires people who are in this profession by choice rather then BY CHANCE. Dear sir/madam, Though blogs and social networking sites are new communication medium, there are lots of questions that we need to short out before moving from e-mail list to new set of technologies. The major concern is –commenting feature. There are instances people simply abandoning their blogs because of the trouble they have had by anonymous commenter. One instance is Kathy Sierra’s controversy. After Sierra’s controversy Tim O’Rielly has to start "support responsible commenting" movement to keep away people from posing threats through blogs. The longevity of blogging discussion is also a debatable issue. Twitter you have to limit for 140 characters. Another thing is searching and archiving in e-mail list is much easier than some of new media tools. Social networking sites are not allowed in most of the organizations. Experimenting with new tools is imperative. Post-modern thinking of death of the author is extending to death of the e-mail lists. Dear Librarian, W3C InfoWorld - Expanding its Semantic Web technology stack, the W3C (World Wide Consortium) announced this week a standard to bridge knowledge organization systems like classifications, thesauri and taxonomies to linked data. The Semantic Web is intended to make it easier to search for relevant documents and information on the Web. With the W3C SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) standard, enterprises, social networking applications, government portals and others managing large collections of items, such as books, news reports and blog entries, can leverage linked data capabilities. SKOS provides a model for expressing basic structure and content of concepts, such as thesauri, subject heading lists and taxonomies. Different communities can use SKOS to link vocabularies to the Semantic Web. SKOS enables subject headings to be used to broaden or narrow queries for discovering resources. By publishing subject headings in SKOS, the U.S. Library of Congress, for example, has made them available to the "linked data community," the W3C said. For example, a query about books on Chinese literature can be narrowed to "Chinese drama" or "Chinese children's plays." New routes are created for discovering information. "Active participation from the library and information science community in the development of SKOS over the past seven years has been key to ensuring that SKOS meets a variety of needs," said Thomas Baker, co-chair of the Semantic Web Deployment Working Group, which published SKOS, in a statement released by W3C. "One goal in creating SKOS was to provide new uses for well-established knowledge organization systems by providing a bridge to the linked data cloud." Serving as an application of the W3C RDF (Resource Description Framework), SKOS is part of a Semantic Web stack that also includes such technologies as OWL (Web Ontology Language). While both SKOS and OWL can be used to define vocabularies, SKOS differs in that it is a simple language with just a few features tuned for sharing and linking knowledge organization systems.
