Conference on Digital Archiving of Community Knowledge Organized by Centre for Community Knowledge, Ambedkar University, Delhi 15-18 December 2010 Theme The conference will deliberate on systems and methods of collecting, documenting and applying Knowledge located and embedded in people and communities. Such knowledge is location and context specific and grows in the processes of its acquisition, use and dissemination by members of the community in changing social, political, cultural and economic contexts. The challenge is to archive such knowledge, usually oral, in a form that can link to acquisition, use and dissemination in modes compatible with formal, academic, multi-disciplinary and institutional processes. Effort must be made to ensure that such archives are available to the communities concerned to enable them to enrich their own repositories of knowledge. The conference is being organized in collaboration with the World Oral Literatures Project, Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge UK. In the context of the conference, what we refer to as Community Knowledge has also been called Traditional Knowledge, Oral Knowledge, Grass-roots Knowledge, Indigenous Knowledge, etc. The areas covered under this rubric include: * Oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of cultural heritage * Performing arts, such as traditional music, dance and theater * Social practices, rituals and festive events * Knowledge and practices concerning life, nature and the universe * Plastic Arts and Traditional craftsmanship. The Conference will be of interest to: * The Communities concerned who wish to document such knowledge * Field workers who collect such knowledge * System designers engaged in database management, who can contribute to an open-source design solution, catering to large quantities of video and audio data, in addition to images and documents. * Scholars and researchers interested in linking their disciplinary knowledge with oral community knowledge. Topics Digital archiving entails discussion on a matrix of three linked aspects: 1. Data and Information Collection: What and how to document – who decides? 2. Documentation/ Archiving: Design parameters of MIS (storage and retrieval); Classification and Codification; Open Source Technology Platforms. 3. Users of Archives: Researchers, Scholars, Policy makers and the Communities concerned. They would suggest Retrieval Taxonomy/ Thematic aggregations and the level of detail expected from the Archives. Dear Sudip If u are under a proxy, set the proxy and port in network proxy setting (System > Preference > Network Proxy). You need to be a sudoer. If u are connected directly, pl ensure that option is checked (by default). Now come to Synaptic Package Manager (System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)) and do the followings - 1> Come to SPM > Setting > Repositories and check all the source under ubuntu software; 2> Come to SPM > Setting > Repositories and check all the source under other software; 3> Select Download from Main Server (in the same window) 4> Come to SPM > Setting > preferences and go to Network tab to set manual proxy (if under a proxy) or Direct connection to Internet (if u r connected directly); 5> Now click Reload button (in the menu bar of SPM; Voila. That's it. Dear Friends, I discovered some fact on Digital Information and its growth in leaps and bounds. I want to share the same Digital information in India to grow 60 fold by 2020: EMC BS Reporter / Mumbai September 10, 2010, 0:44 IST India’s share of digital information is expected to grow 60-fold by 2020, driven by the roll-out of 3G and BWA networks, digitisation of television networks, and increased technology adoption among individuals, small and medium enterprises, enterprises and in Government services like the Unique ID project, Census, among others, said a study. The findings of ‘The Digital Universe in India’ sponsored by EMC, provider of information infrastructure technology, stated that India’s 2010 tally for digital information equals information stored in 2.5 billion iPads of 16GB. It would mean more than 464,000 separate towers of iPads of 16GB stacked flat on top of each other, each as high as India’s famed Qutub Minar. Or if the 2.5 billion iPads were laid end-to-end, they would be equal to a continuos line of more than 197 million Tata Nano cars. “The digital information explosion will create significant challenges for India’s CIOs and IT managers for two reasons. First, enterprises have responsibility for the storage, protection and management of 80 per cent of the digital universe’s data, and this liability will only increase as social networking and Web 2.0 technologies continue to impact the enterprise,” said Manoj Chugh, President, EMC India and SAARC and Director of Global Accounts for EMC Asia Pacific & Japan. “Second, while digital information will grow 60-fold, enterprise investments in IT and staffing will grow only in single digits. The cumulative effect is driving CIOs to transform traditional infrastructures into private cloud data centers that offer internal and external customers IT as a service,” he added. The EMC-IDC study further points out that 50 per cent more digital information is created today in India than the capacity that exists to store it. This number will grow to 80 per cent over the next decade. The study revealed that over the next decade (2010 to 2020), digital information in India will grow from 40,000 petabytes to 2.3 million petabytes, twice as fast as the worldwide rate. He further added that: “The digital information deluge will translate into a significant market opportunity in India over the next decade.
