National Workshop on Building PhD Theses Digital Libraries Using Nitya D’Arch - November 6-8, 2010

Open Access Online PhD Theses is highly connected to the purpose of universities and the value of scholarship. It advances the university's interest and fulfills its mission to share the knowledge it produces. In India the first university to take initiative in this regard is mahatma Gandhi University. The launching of the Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) Open Access Digital Archive of PhD Theses (www.mgutheses.org) in 2008 by Former President of India H E Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam the live presence of the archive in the web for the last two years is a success story among Indian universities. It is accessible from anywhere at any time through the URL http://www.mgutheses.org since its launching in 2008. With all the encouragement and instruments provided by UGC during the the last decadeIt MGU Archive is still the only successful full text Open Access archives of dissertations hosted in the web by any Indian University. The archive has been selected as one of the Very Best Web Resources for Education and Research by INTUTE, the European Consortium of universities funded by Government of UK’s Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). MGU has also become the first signatory among Indian universities to adopt UGC’s Regulation on E-Theses and contribute data to the UGC’s national archive of theses at INFLIBNET. The present Workshop is intended to encourage other universities and research institutes to bring results of academic research to public domain and also familiarize Nitya D Arch and the multilingual technologies for full text archiving used in developing the MGU Digital Archives of PhD theses that can be easily adopted by any university or research institute for any Indian language. Nitya D’ Arch facilitates multilingual data input and query building, advanced Boolean query building for accurate and relevant search, and deep indexing which facilitates retrieval of specific pages/sections. The programme will discuss various problems hidden in the process of digitization and introduce tetsed techniques and solutions. It will be an opportunity for implementers and developers from all Indian universities to gain both technical and theoretical insight in Theses Digitaization and providing Open Acces to results of public funded research. No registration fee will be charged for the participants who are selected to undergo the programme in the first batch. But selection will be based on merit of the participants this capability building at the sponsoring institute. How to integrate Google Transliteration API in Koha OPAC

Google Transliteration (http://www.google.com/transliterate/) is a useful online tool for cross walk between international and regional languages in India. You can type in your own language and convert the same in to any India language without any hassle. The same service can easily integrate in Koha OPAC to enable search in Indian languages. Type keywords in Google Transliteration input in English and put a space, it will convert your English language keyword in your desired regional language. Copy paste the converted text to Koha search box and press search button. It will give retrieve records in regional language stored in Koha. How to do it 1. Go to Google transliteration API page, http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxlanguage/documentation/#Transliteration 2. Find the section “Transliteration control with multiple languages” 3. Copy the code and paste in Koha > System Preferences > OPAC > Main User Block 4. If necessary, you can change the values in Default language, Source language and destination language 5. Save the content in “OpacMainUserBlock”. Transliteration box will appear in Koha OPAC page. You can also find the API for single language transliteration. MS to launch Wikibhasha to boost multilingual content

Dear Friends, MS to launch Wikibhasha to boost multilingual content Microsoft revealed that they will soon launch the beta version Wikibhasha, a multilingual content creation tool for Wikipedia. The tool will help to simplify and speed up the process of creating multilingual content in Wikipedias. Wikibhasa derives from the well-known term 'wiki' denoting collaboration, and 'bhasha' which means 'language' in Hindi and Sanskrit and will serve multiple purposes to contributors of wiki like finding content from other Wikipedia articles, translate the content into other languages and then compose new articles or enhance existing articles in multilingual Wikipedias. It will support content creation in more than 30 languages and also enable easy content creation in non-English Wikipedias by leveraging the large volume of English Wikipedia content as the source of information. Microsoft Research and Wikimedia Foundation will also work closely with the Wikipedia user communities focusing on content creation in Arabic, German, Hindi, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. They also hope to inspire a new wave of multilingual content creation. "We're always happy to see work on improving multilingual collaboration between wikis," said Danese Cooper, CTO of the Wikimedia Foundation. "Microsoft Research is doing some interesting work with WikiBhasha, and we're very pleased that it chose to share its client code in open source as well." The browser-based tool offers a user interface layer on top of the target-language Wikipedia during content creation, integrating content discovery with linguistic and collaborative services and focusing the use on content creation in the target Wikipedia through a three-step process which guides the user through content discovery and sourcing, composing a local-language article and publishing it in the target Wikipedia. The tool which is supported by MS Machine Translation system and MS Collaborative Translations Framework and conceptualized by Multilingual Systems Group currently works on Windows Internet Explorer (7.0 and 8.0) on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 and on Firefox (3.5 or above) on Linux Fedora (11 and 12), Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Dear friends, I thought it useful to communicate to Library Science organizations and agencies this below published notice of Expression of Interest (EOI) for Empanelment of Agencies for Rolling Out of eGranthalaya Software. Last date is 11th October 2010 upto 3 PM. As you may be aware that eGranthalaya ( http://egranthalaya.nic.in ) is a Digital Agenda of National Informatics Centre (NIC) for Automation and Networking of libraries and building Digital Library. Software is provided free of cost to libraries on request. Till date thousands of libraries are using the software in different parts of India and many more in the pipeline. With the emphasis on automation and networking of libraries as a part of e-Governance to reach far flung areas of the country, the demand for support services for implementation has increased manifold. Towards this objective, it is proposed to empanel organizations/ agencies of repute for providing Rollout services for eGranthalaya software. This project spans whole of the country.
