National Seminar on “Digital Future of Library Materials: Issues and Challenges” Organised by- Department of Library and Information Science, Vidyasagar University, Medinipur – 721 102, West Bengal Date- March 17-18, 2011 Venue - B C Mukherjee Hall, Vidyasagar University Campus, Midnapore About the Seminar Libraries have undergone considerable changes to cope up with the increasing use of technology. Information Centers are striving hard to match the expectation of users by competing with other Internet information service providers. Customized information aggregation, Tagging etc. is a few of the initiatives which libraries are embracing to make their existence relevant. Document storage, representation and document delivery are three of the most important activities of Library services which are ever influenced as technology develops. In pursuit of changing face of library services and activities the Department of Library and Information Science of Vidyasagar University organizing two day National Seminar on “Digital Future of Library Materials: Issues and Challenges”. During the seminar the theme will by analysed from multiple perspectives ranging from user interface and digital preservation technologies to affordability and sustainability of digital technologies. Sub Themes The following sub themes may be considered in this connection: I) Emerging Trends in Digital Preservation Technologies ; II) Open Source and Commercial Software; III) Sustainability of Open Access Initiatives; IV) Future of e-journals & e-books : Emerging Integrated format; V) Building Institutional Repositories; VI) Transcending the language barriers through digital technologies; Call for Papers We invite articles on the aforementioned sub-themes. Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research and Training Centre 8th Mile, Mysore Road, Bangalore 560059 M.S. in Library and Information Science With the emergence of knowledge-centered economies and the knowledge society, Information & Knowledge Management has emerged as a major area of concern and importance to large corporate houses, R & D Institutions and even governments. The area cuts across several disciplines including Information Technology, Library Science, and Management sciences, to mention a few. The Documentation Research & Training Centre, a unit of the Indian Statistical Institute, founded by Late Prof. S. R. Ranganathan is an internationally recognized centre for advanced training and research in this area. The DRTC now offers a novel M.S. Programme in Library & Information Science with the primary objective of preparing the next generation information managers. This new and unique programme offers an ideal blend of courses spanning library science, information technology, knowledge management and quantitative studies. About the workshop As we know the Open Source Softwares have created a lot of enthusiasm and opportunities in the domain of library services. Open Source Softwares are available free of cost, support you to work at the system level and provide freedom to customize software as per the requirements of a specific library. Numerous Open Source Library automation softwares like Koha, NewGenLib, MyLibrary, and digital library creation softwares like Green Stone and Dspace etc are available. Koha is the full featured Open-source Integrated Library System (ILS) from open source domain. It is Web-centric, modular, multilingual and compliant with almost all the bibliographic standards storing, processing and retrieving of Indic script based documents.
