Emerging Futures of Librarians
by Sukhdev Singh 15 Apr '11

15 Apr '11

Dear Friends, There is a nice draft report on emerging future for librarians. Please check out http://diglib.clairmontheights.org/node/3389 for report. I have already twitted ( http://twitter.com/esukhdev ) some of the emerging trends suggested by it. Here is the summary: Digital Library Initiative has been asked to submit a summary review of our thoughts on emerging trends in the roles of the subject liaison. The goal is to inform service division team leaders before their report out April 12 on this subject. From our review of published literature (see recommended readings below) and from our own experience, we endorse the now common assumption that the emerging future of the subject librarian will be, like the present, multifaceted and dynamic both within and among subject librarian positions. In addition, each position will be contingent in configuration depending on a series of changing variables and vectors such as disciplinary culture, digital technologies, evolving research practices, scholarly publishing, intellectual property rights, and economic and government support of higher education. So we speak of futures in the plural, offering a few possible scenarios in different formats (narrative, graphic, tabular), and concluding with proposals to take advantage of the new opportunities to leverage existing skills and develop new ones. --- Enjoy reading. seeking three publications
by Bob Heyer-Gray 13 Apr '11

A researcher here at the University of California, Davis was interested in exploring three references (see below) that are not available through any of our usual library resources. It is not clear to me that these were actually ever published, but before giving up, I thought I would try this list. Bhattacharya TK, Mishra TN, Singh B. Techniques for removal of CO2 and H2S from biogas. Paper presented at XXIV annual convention of ISAE, held at PKV, Akola, 1988. Bhattacharya is a faculty member in the Department of Farm Machinery & Power Engineering at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology Khapre UL. Studies on biogas utilization for domestic cooking. Paper presented at XXV annual convention of ISAE, held at CTAE, Udaipur; 1989. Dubey AK. Wet scrubbing of carbon dioxide. Annual report of CIAE, Bhopal (India); 2000. Dubey is a researcher in the Agricultural Energy & Power Division of CIAE. CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF LIBRARY EDUCATION IN INDIA
by bhakti gala 13 Apr '11

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF LIBRARY EDUCATION IN INDIA Dear Friends and Professionals, As you all know, we have completed 100 years of Library Movement in our country. Just for records, in 1910, His Highness Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III invited W. A. Borden to set up free public libraries in Baroda State; and in March 1911 W.A. Borden initiated training for librarianship in Central Library, Baroda. We as a nation are completing 100 years of library education. Let us celebrate this occasion in a novel way – AS A MOVEMENT! Let us gift at least one book each to any two children in our region in a language of their choice. (Children after reading the book may circulate it further if they so wish.) Let us also try and inspire two more individuals, i.e., fellow professionals or any friends, to do the same. Just let us remember to write on the top of the title page of the books that we are gifting: “CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF LIBRARY EDUCATION IN INDIA” The reasons for suggesting this way of celebration are: firstly, this would promote the culture of reading amongst the young; and secondly, we librarians would be able to gain a special and honourable place in the thoughts of the young minds; thirdly, this way we would be able to keep on our celebrations throughout the year and if desired even longer! Librarians: Masters of the info universe (Must read)
by Pawan Agrawal 13 Apr '11

13 Apr '11

Librarians: Masters of the info universeLibrarians, information specialists, knowledge managers or whatever title a librarian might have -- their skills are in high demand. And, though you might not know it, they are everywhere. And so in their honor during National Library Week, we enjoy the following tidbits of information.*Famous people who were librarians***FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, Casanova, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, former first lady Laura Bush and China's Mao Zedong. At one point in their lives, each of them either worked as librarian or in a library*Librarians are techno-savvy***Librarians don't just use books anymore. Searching through tweets, blogs, podcasts, websites and more to find accurate and authoritative information has become more the rule than the exception. At a time where anyone can Google just about anything, librarians don't just find information, they find the * correct* information -- and fast. The American Library Association reports reference librarians in the nation's public and academic libraries answered nearly 5.7 million questions each week in 2010.*Filmmaker's library***Even "Star Wars" creator George Lucas has his own research library on his Skywalker Ranch. Lucas started the library in 1978, and the collection is housed under a large stained-glass dome.*Librarians influence our culture and society***While clearing out old archives at the Palmer Theological Seminary in 2005, librarian Heather Carbo found a working manuscript of one of Beethoven's final compositions.*Librarians track spy info and classified intelligence***When the CIA needs to provide information to the U.S. president, they turn to their librarians. To become one of the U.S. intelligence's community research experts, a librarian must pass medical and psychological exams, polygraph interviews and clear extensive background investigations.*Librarians are heroic***Alia Muhammad Baker, the chief librarian of Basra, Iraq, removed 30,000 books from the city's main library before it was destroyed during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.*Their numbers are many***In 2009, there were 206,000 librarians, 50,000 library technicians and 96,000 other education, training and library workers*Librarians are behind the scenes in current events***-- Federal government shutdown. Lawmakers go to the Congressional Research Service, a division of the Library of Congress, for information.-- The royal wedding at Westminster Abbey. The Abbey's Library and Muniment Room has a historic collection of books, manuscripts and archival material.-- NATO no-fly zone over Libya. NATO's Brussels Headquarters houses a multimedia library with a collection focusing on international relations, security and defense, military questions and world affairs.*Warning to readers about librarians***A character in "The Callahan Touch", one of science fiction writer Spider Robinson's books, said, "Librarians are the secret masters of the universe. They control information. Never piss one off."Good advice.
