Progress of UDC Summary translation in to languages of the Indian subcontinent
by Aida Slavic 10 May '11

10 May '11

Hi, Colleagues may be interested in the progress made so far in translating the UDC Summary into languages of the Indian subcontinent (http://www.udcc.org/udcsummary/php/index.php) Currently UDC Summary has around 2400 classes and is available online in 42 languages. We hope to be able to provide exports for free use for training and indexing soon. At the moment we can send multilingual exports of what is available on upon request. In 2010, under the guidance of Dr. Devika Madalli and with help from DRTC (Bangalore) we managed to establish contact with volunteers in a number of universities and we have made good progress in making at least the top classes in a number of languages available online. We are pleased to announce that the translation in two Indic languages is now fully completed - BENGALI Bengali (http://www.udcc.org/udcsummary/php/index.php?lang=bn) - courtesy of Bhaskar Mukherjee (Banaras Hindu University) and Subal Chandra Biswas - HINDI (http://www.udcc.org/udcsummary/php/index.php?lang=hi) - courtesy of Aditya Tripathi and colleagues from Banaras Hindu University: Rajani Mishra, Sneha Tripathi, Praveen Shukla - and Vinit Kumar from DRTC, Bangalore In addition we have top classes and started translatin the following four languages: - Marathi (http://www.udcc.org/udcsummary/php/index.php?lang=mr) - courtesy of Rajendra Kumbhar (Uni. of Pune), Sunita Barve (Uni. of Pune), Priyamwada Joshi (Thane College) - Malayalam (http://www.udcc.org/udcsummary/php/index.php?lang=ml) - courtesy of Anila S (DRTC) - Kannada (http://www.udcc.org/udcsummary/php/index.php?lang=kn) - courtesy of Amrut Benahal, Preedip Balaji B. (DRTC) - Tamil (http://www.udcc.org/udcsummary/php/index.php?lang=ta) - courtesy of Preedip Balaji B (DRTC) Colleagues have approached us for Punjabi and Urdu and we hope to make some progress with these two languages as well. I would like to congratulate and thank all colleagues who helped us so far with this international project. Translation of a knowledge classification is by no means a trivial task and having more translators helping and contributing is paramount. The experience is also rewarding in terms of working towards an established knowledge organization terminology in any given language that can be shared online within and between communities. We would again like to extend our invitation to colleagues from these above and other language communities to join us. -- Dr Aida Slavic UDC Editor in Chief UDC Consortium Email: aida.slavic(a)udcc.org ===== Web: http://www.udcc.org blog: http://universaldecimalclassification.blogspot.com/ twitter:http://twitter.com/UDCC = New! = Multilingual UDC Summary: http://www.udcc.org/udcsummary/php/index.php 2011 Seminar Classification& Ontology:http://seminar.udcc.org/2011/index.htm -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
