Discripancies in the article on OSS
by Mariyam Shipha 24 May '11

24 May '11

Dear Sir, This communication is regarding the following recent article. Giri, Rabishankar and Sengar, DS (2011). Use of open source software in the learning resource centre of Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology: a case study, Annals of Library and Information Studies; Vol. 58, No.1; pg 41-48. http://nopr.niscair.res.in/handle/123456789/11555 Mr. Giri was the resource person for giving the training on NewGenLib to our SAARC student batch in NISCAIR. He was very friendly and helpful to us to make us in understanding the functions and workings of NewGenLIb. He mentioned some other drawbacks of NewGenlib in the class in addition to those mentioned in the article Some of them are: 1.Management of Binding: Suppose our library has given 1000 books in a lot to the binder. But the binder returned books after binding in two lots say 500 and 500, and submitted two bills. In NewGenlib, there is no provision to accommodate the two bills for one order. 2. No distinction between reported Loss and final weed out of books. i.e. Suppose in a stock verification, a book has been reported loss and latter it has been found. There has been no provision to get back the books for circulation catalogue once it is reported loss in the software. 3. Compatibility of data between the 2.1 version and the higher version. Especially in Patron circulation data. 4. Upgrading the PostgreSql from 8.0 to 8.3 onwards gives problems 5. Hardly any provision for Article indexing and so on He showed us at least 12 difficulties in dealing with NewGenLib. While we are experimenting with NewGenLib in our Library, we have found all those are true. My appeal is that professional must be sincere in presenting the information which will help in choosing the best OSS for our libraries. or Does being an Indian, professionals are promoting an OSS originated from India irrespective of its merit.? Dear friends, You may perhaps be aware that NCSI has been, amongst other activities, imparting training in information management for several years. The training program has endeavoured to keep pace with the times. Accordingly, new approaches and courses have been regularly reflected in the curriculum. A very valuable feature of the program has been the accommodation of very different and even conflicting perspectives. It was believed that an exposure to different ways of approaching and solving problems would go a long way in developing the trainees' abilities. Though not necessarily mutually exclusive, it was left to the trainees' discretion as to which approach they eventually wanted to follow. The process of revising and updating the course contents continued till the year 2008 when the training program in 'Information and Knowledge Management'(IKM) was closed down. The last batch of the IKM program saw the introduction of a new course titled 'Knowledge Economics'. This was besides the other courses that were being offered then- Digital Libraries, Introduction to Knowledge Management, Content Analysis, Information Economics amongst others. The purpose of this mail is to share with you the outline of the course contents on Knowledge Economics and in the process tap on your collective knowledge and wisdom in course curriculum design. While universities and training institutes in the country stand to benefit immensely through such co-innovation, we are hopeful that other information and knowledge service organizations will also gain in the process. While we at NCSI continue to work at developing new services, we believe this can be accelerated through your joint participation. A number of new potential services are in different stages of conceptualization and design and we welcome you to take part in the discovery process. As with the NCSI hosted discussion fora Lis-Forum and KM-Forum, we hope to continue to play the role of a facilitator. The sharing of the Knowledge Economics course outline is a step in this direction. The Knowledge Economics course content outline is listed at www.ncsi-kms.blogspot.com. You are encouraged to discuss, criticize and offer suggestions in whatever manner you may deem fit and keep improving and adding to the content over time. Thank you. Regards Knowledge Management Services- Planning and Design Group National Centre for Science Information (NCSI) Indian Institute of Science Bangalore 560 012 India
