Center for the Book
by Jayadev P Hiremath 16 Dec '11

16 Dec '11

Center for the Book http://www.read.gov/cfb Created in 1984, the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress has been dedicated to creating affiliate centers in the 50 states. These affiliates (and the Center, of course) work together to "sponsor programs that highlight their area's literary heritage and call attention to the importance of books, reading, literacy and libraries." On their website, visitors can learn about the affiliate centers in each state, and also learn about the annual "Idea Exchange Day". Visitors to the site can read their annual report, learn about their staff members, and also check out their annual newsletters. Along the left-hand side of the page sit the "Resources". Here visitors can wander through author webcasts, booklists, local resources organized by geography, and their upcoming literary contests -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Re: [LIS-Forum] Barrier & seeking solution for digitization of thesesfor digital library.
by Dr. J. K. Vijayakumar 14 Dec '11

14 Dec '11

Generally institution can not make any claim of ownership of student dissertations or theses. However, the institution can retain a non-exclusive license to make copies of dissertations or theses as needed for the academic or archival purposes of the institution. This can include providing open access to the work on the Internet (institutional repository). If necessary, to protect legitimate proprietary interests and IP (such as patent rights), students should have an option to delay the public display of their dissertation or thesis (embargo period), until they secure the patent. So, the copyright and IP right should remain with the student/researcher, not with the institution. Dr. J. K.
