Library train captivates kids
by Jayadev P Hiremath 04 May '12

HATLEY -- Children visiting the Hatley branch of the Marathon County Public Library have been captivated by the library's latest addition. An electric Thomas the Train set now hovers high above the heads of library patrons. The train, a donation to the library from an anonymous donor, runs on a circular rail suspended from the ceiling. Library assistant Karen Johnson said the train is a big hit. "The kids absolutely love it. So do the parents," she said. Alyiah Taylor-Medina, 5, of Weston stood transfixed as she watched the train go around during one of her weekly visits to the library. Aliyah typically spends several days a week in Hatley where her uncle, Jeremiah Taylor, 32, of Hatley brings her to story hour every Tuesday morning. "I love the library," Alyiah said. "I love the stuffed animals and all the stories and the train, too." Johnson said the library asked community members, through a newsletter early last year, to consider donating a train for the children's section. When presented with the train set in May, she said she was pleasantly surprised by the gift. "I wasn't expecting anything quite so nice. This is quite a valuable train," Johnson said. Three additional anonymous donors stepped forward to donate the time and talent necessary to build a track, which includes mountains and a tunnel. Johnson's husband, Glenn Johnson, also of Hatley, designed the suspension system to hang the train from the ceiling, well out of harm's way. The train, which moves forward and backward at varying speeds, is operated by a switch that is out of the children's reach but easily accessible for most parents. Johnson said the library constantly searches for ways to capture children's interest, and the train was a perfect way to do just that. "The train brings the kids in and keeps them quiet, too," Johnson said. "It's mesmerizing." http://www.wausaudailyherald.com/article/20120504/WDH100201/205040323/Libra… -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

IASLIC appreciates UGC decision
by Prof Pijushkanti Panigrahi 02 May '12

02 May '12

IASLIC (Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres) welcomes and appreciates the following decision of UGC for Submission of NET Application in Off-Line Mode. We express our heartfelt thanks to UGC for issuing such an important order to help LIS students. “Due to unprecedented increase in the number of candidates willing to apply during the last days of online registration for the ensuing NET examination scheduled to be held on 24th June, 2012, it has been observed that the students are facing difficulty in submitting online application. In order to overcome this problem and keeping in view the paucity of time, UGC has decided that such candidates, who have paid the prescribed fee through Bank Challan by the due date, i.e., 2nd May, 2012 and are not able to submit their application online, may now apply in offline mode. They are, therefore, advised to download the Application Form (to be filled in duplicate), Admission Card and Attendance Slip from www.ugcnetonline.in and also from www.ugc.ac.in. The last date for submitting the hard copies of duly filled in applications along with original fee receipt & attested copies of category certificate(s), has now been extended up to May 10, 2012. NOTE: It may be noted that all such candidates who have already registered themselves successfully in online mode and have submitted the hard copies of the application to the chosen centre NEED NOT APPLY AGAIN THROUGH OFFLINE MODE.” CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD OFFLINE APPLICATION FORM http://www.ugc.ac.in/inside/offline_application_form-net.pdf ========================================================================================================== পীযূষকান্তি পাণিগ্রাহী Dr Pijushkanti Panigrahi, Professor & Head, Dept of Lib and Inf Science, 3rd Floor Asutosh Building, University of Calcutta, 87/1 College Street,Kolkata - 700 073, West Bengal, India, email : panigrahipk(a)yahoo.com, panigrahipk11(a)gmail.com, (M) : +91 94342 43522. The very interesting thing is that Qualifying UGC NET is more easy compared to the submission of NET online submission... I request, who have access to UGC head qtrs should try to extend the date at least up to 5th May . In "Lessons Learned: How College Students Find Information in the Digital Age," we present findings from our student survey, administered last spring to students (n=2,318) enrolled at six U.S. college campuses (42 pages, PDF, 3 MB). We were struck by what we found. We hope that our findings will help inform educators, such as yourself, about today's college students and how they look for information and conduct research for course-related work and in their everyday lives. Finally, a few thanks are in order for this year's work. We thank ProQuest for their generous support of our research this past year and the MacArthur Foundation for contributing funds to make the current year's ongoing research possible.
