Dear Professional friends I would like to share my opinion on the above issue that may lead to further discussion and help to reach a solution. Background: U.G.C. and managements are compelling the departments / libraries to organize conferences / seminars to get NAAC grade points and supporting financially. The organizers need participants hence accepting every paper that is submitted. The professionals need papers for their CAS promotions or selections and the seminars / conferences are a channel for fast track publication. Further they are submitting for journal publication also. These developments are indeed desirable for the development and recognition of the profession. Outcome: However the outcome is not that encouraging as expected to be. The quantitative growth lead to the qualitative depreciation. Reason: Many of the professionals are not familiar with writing standards and skills. They are not familiar with difference between research article and research paper; innovative ideas and opinion studies; pasting and logical presentation; copying and citing; arbitrary citation and standard citation using a style manual These are not a part of their studies. Even if so, one will forget after examinations. Therefore there is no opportunity for the professionals to learn and acquire the skills of writing and presentation and the standards to be followed. Hence the need is to train our professionals in these aspects. Only then we can expect true academic contributions. The way out: There may be many ways to improve the situation but submitting three propositions for discussion 1. Conducting workshops on preparation and presentation of research paper not for name sake but with real zeal. 2. Applying anti-plagiarism software and reject the identified papers. This is good from the quality point of view but may demoralize the professionals. 3. Having a panel of voluntary editors who will review papers and suggest revision / modification of papers instead of outright rejection. This will improve the writing skills of the author and encourage him/her for standard contributions. I think it is high time to find solutions to the problem and enhance the standard of papers. Then I allowed him to use my name as second author and requested the editor to help the research scholar by publishing this article. No guide for that matter can check the authenticity of the article more than this and I did so. To day after reading these postings, I spoke to the first author. In the first instance, he declined the copying. I told him to go through both the articles and send me the truth by mail. I got the mail as under: *" Sir, As you phoned today regarding the article, I have taken/copied some (may be 15 to 20%) of the literature like abstract, references from the particular article but the data was from my survey I have copied the methodology only, not fully copied. And I used the same schedule to survey the colleges at Gadag City. One more thing that I referred all the references and collected the literature from references. It may be same what I had collected and the author of particular article copied from same references. Sir, Once again I wish to tell you that I have not copied full article as it is. I am very sorry for the same. Further, here onwards, I will not copy or put any same information what the other articles have. And the article published in SRELS was reviewed by experts also." Now I have two options before me: One to request the publishers of the journal to withdraw the article from the journal database. Two to surrender all my academic publications back to the profession. Because a sentence used by my friend has touched ma a lot. In my entire currier I have never taken any black spot like this. I have published more than 50 articles (most of them are available on Google scholar). If any of them are traced as pleagured, I will leave my profession on the same day. Just because of the foolish act of my student, I have to be targeted by immatured statements like: *"Those who have the power and money move up to the ladder no matter what their academic credentials are."* I do not know whome this statement is aiming at. But I request my younger generation Librarians to be little cautious while making statements in the forums like this. Reply to Clarification on API Scores for the Direct Recruitment of Dy. Librarians

Dear Members, Greetings to you. This is in response to the mail posted by Ms. Dimple Patel regarding the API Score to be considered for the Direct Recruitment of Dy. Librarians at State, Central and Deemed Universities. I just thought of sharing some of my views about the API Scoring pattern proposed by UGC for the recruitment of Dy. Librarians. UGC has proposed following three categories for calculating the API Score: Category I: Procurement, organization, and delivery of knowledge and information through Library services Category II: Co-Curricular, Extension and Professional Development related activities Category III: Research and Academic contributions As per the information published in the Gazette of India (2010) , only the points scored under Category III will be considered for the purpose of Direct Recruitment of Dy. Librarians. The minimum API score required is 300 points. The interesting thing to note here is that the API score proposed for the Direct Recruitment of Associate Professor (Stage 4) is also same. When a person is appointed to the post of Dy. Librarian, he will be placed in the pay scale of 15600-39100 AGP 8000 whereas a person who is appointed to the post of Associate Professor will be placed in the pay scale of 37400- 67000 AGP 9000. The above information published in the Gazette of India indicates that the proposed minimum API Score of 300 points will be applicable only when the person is recruited to the post of Dy. Librarian at Stage 4 i.e in the pay scale of 37400- 67000 AGP 9000 and not for the post of Dy. Librarian at Stage 3 i.e 15600- 39100 AGP 8000. I personally feel that applying the appointment criteria meant for the post of Associate Professor (Stage 4) for the appointment of Dy. Librarian (Stage 3) is incorrect both legally and logically. Sponsored by the Free Library of Philadelphia, SEPTA and Dunkin Donuts, the month long “Enrich Your Ride with Reading” project is billed as "the first Virtual Library in the U.S". (there’s also one in Budapest) and coincides with National Library Month. To lure you in, all advertising signage on the Suburban Station train platforms is now touting these free offerings - actually a small sample of the 80,000 e-books, 8,000 audio books and thousand plus podcasts available to card holders at freelibrary.org. The graphics for each sign-touted classic, best seller and podcast includes a QR (quick response) code symbol, Just open a QR application (free to download) on your smart phone or tablet then point your device’s camera to frame and capture the QR image. Within a minute or less, the book or podcast automatically loads onto your device. And even if using an Android or Apple iOS device (like an iPod Touch) that’s lacking mobile phone service, you can use the free Wi-Fi available on the train station platforms to enable the download. . User note: if you don’t see a book or podcast you want on the first billboard, look for a second sign further down the platform packing a different set of offerings. Library wedding proposal: one for the books

Jason Methner is the creative mind behind the illustrated account of his relationship with his girlfriend, Molly Lipsitz. He had the book, titled *A Hare-y Tale*, illustrated by friend Yoni Limor<http://yonimation.com/>and placed the bound volume among the “new arrivals” in a Chicago library for his 27-year-old girlfriend to find. The book refers to some of the activities they have done as a couple in their 4½-year relationship. In it, Methner is portrayed as the tortoise and Lipsitz as “Bunny” — because she has slept with a stuffed rabbit named Bunny since childhood. In one sketch, Bunny is shown marching off to university with a bag of her belongings tied to a stick. The book even includes a sketch of their one-year-old dog Hammer. Like the classic tortoise and hare story, Methner and Lipsitz each take life at a different pace. Methner is laid back, while Lipsitz is an A-type personality, very organized and constantly producing lists. She enjoys healthy food. He loves cheeseburgers. However, they have plenty in common, including a love of adventure, food and jogging. They also enjoy good books and libraries. So it was only natural that the marriage proposal should take place in a library. For this special moment, Methner chose the Harold Washington Library Centre, the main branch of the Chicago public library system. On March 23, he used “a lie” to trick Lipsitz into finding the 20-page book on a shelf in the branch’s Thomas Hughes Children’s Library. As Lipsitz began flipping through it, she came to an abrupt stop on page 3: the narrative mentioned Sandy Springs, her home town near Atlanta. Lipsitz grew suspicious. Methner encouraged her to read on. On the next to last page, the story read: “Although we don’t often run at same pace, do you want to slow down and spend the rest of your life with me?” And on the last page: “And Bunny said …” This was followed by an empty space for her to say “yes.” At that point, Methner got down on one knee, popped the question and pulled out a diamond engagement ring. As in all good fairytales, this book had a happy ending. She exclaimed, “Yes,” and a professional photographer concealed behind the book shelves emerged to snap the delightful moment. “I didn’t cry. That’s not really my style,” Lipsitz told the Star from Chicago. “I was just totally surprised and shocked in a good way. We too faced problems in using the software in 2005-06 at DRDL, Hyderabad. We switched over from Libris to LibSys. For data export, they took enormous time. The Engineer who visited DRDL, Hyderabad took data on CD to facilitate export of OPAC data. But after 6 months expressed inability to export saying some lame excuse. Again they took the data and took more time. Meanwhile I joined DESIDOC in 2006, and was able to call their senior executives to solve the problem. All this took more than 1 year. Again they charge exorbitantly for maintenance. I understand it has the largest customer base in India and so they are dictating term (Monopoly). LIS professionals have to unitedly take on such issues raising in National Forums like Conferences, etc. Whenever we suggest a new facility--utility--improvement, they take and improve the software. But our intellectual capital (suggestions/improvements) do not get any rewards. The are used to bring new release with increased price tag. Why can't we use KOHa or NEWGENLI--the open source software???? AL MOORTHY

General Issues in Library Data Migration: In this discussion we are only considering one minute aspect of metadata migration of Books from Libsys to other LMS. But other parts are untouched like Journals, Circulation Data, Members records, Article Indexing, Budget, News Clips, Full text files, Images, Audio, Video, etc. Actually the task is increasing day by day due to Library ICT Modernization infrastructure, consolidation and cost optimization. There is a common assumption that whenever you migrate data from one system to another there is certain percentage loss of data if not well planned financially and technically. Actually, softwares are not at fault. Almost all softwares are having the export/import facility. But major issue is human intervention. Very rarely softwares are able to migrate/merge/import all library data automatically without any flaw or loss. Libsys, KOHA, NewGenlib, eGranthalaya, VTLS, Liberty, etc have export/ import facility, but no software can migrate all kinds of the above data automatically. It requires writing software/utility/programmes codes for importing software schema and structure. Who will pay for these efforts? MARCEdit, etc are the tools for exported data of bibliographic recordsonly, but not how to export from Libsys, etc. 2. Export in Excel, MARC21, XML from LMS softwares: Almost all software have export facility. Dr Pardeep Rai wrote that libsys software does not support in exporting data into other format such as CCF, Oracle or MySQL, etc. No question of exporting data directly to Oracle or MySQL. Each software has its own table schema and architecture using Oracle or SQL server or PostgreSQL or MySQL. Of course, Libsys has export facility in their Cataloging module to migrate data in CCF, EXCEL, MARC, Text. Actually more than 95% of Libsys Users are not using any backend database (SQL server or PostgreSQL or MySQL or Oracle) to avoid this type of non-cooperation from Libsys. They have purchased flat file system Libsys software and they have to be much dependant on Libsys for small-small things. 3. Import from Excel, MARC, XML in any LMS or DL: As I wrote no software has perfect automated system to import data/metadata. For example, to the best of my knowledge, Libsys has import facility for only books if you use their typical software without any backend database. Journals, article indexing, fulltext files, images, videos, circulation data, etc. But of course with the help of any Libsys/programmer you can migrate if data is available in softcopy structured format. This is the reason, vendors charge for their effort estimate. Another example, even if your data is in excel, fields may be named differently and data may be entered differently like two Authors separated by comma, sometimes both authors in different columns, then you need little programming to break the data according to new softwares� schema and tables. 4. Non-cooperation from vendors: As Dr Pardeep Rai wrote that Libsys is not cooperating. Dr. R K Ch Patro wrote that Libsys is charging Rs one lakh for migrating 10000 records. I also got similar grievances from four-five professional colleagues, but even then they manage migration without the cooperation of Libsys. NIC has migrated for around 30 libraries Libsys data to eGranthalaya. In eGranthalaya software there is a module for importing data from Excel, XML amd MARC. Dr Manjunath rightly said that your license agreement should be clear enough to take help from any vendors. I will also suggest Libsys to cooperate and not to remove/block the export module in case of not paying AMC with a fear of losing business, instead you will gain more business. Because India is a big country and requires 100s of Libsys like companies to achieve desired level of automation. 5. Best Practices in Data Migration: Following are my suggestion for balancing the issue, a. While purchasing/acquiring the software, ensure in License agreement for export in at least Excel, MARC21, and Structured text. Import is little tedious depending upon data sources, schema, quality, volume and structure but terms and conditions should spell for helping from importing data from at least Excel, Access, MARC, XML, or RDBMS. Vendors may charge some amount for importing when implementing the application softwares. b. Librarians should regularly( daily, monthly, yearly) take backup of database, copy at safe place (pen drive, another computer or network). c. Library Application software should be implemented preferably in web based manner with back end database (either SQL server or PostgreSQL or MySQL, or Oracle, etc) with hosting of data at your Internet service provider�s server with network security, data security and web site auditing. Dear Friends, Dew to my busy schedule, I could not see the LIS Forum mail posted by Vasantha Raju and subsequent postings of Prof.Mallinath Kumbar and Dr.A.L.Murthy. I AM DEEPLY HURT BY THIS ACT OF PLAGIARISM. AS MY NAME IS TAKEN AS THE CO-AUTHOR, I OWN THIS RESPONSIBILITY AND PLEAD GUILTY FOR THIS ACT WHICH HAS TAKEN PLACE WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE. The first author was working for his PhD under my guidence and he was to publish two articles before his submission. He came to me with a request that he has made a survey on Education Institutions in Gadag City and written an article based on the survey and requested me to put a word to the editor of SRELS. When I looked at the article, I found that it is an empirical work based on a survey in the place where the author is working. Then I allowed him to use my name as second author and requested the editor to help the research scholar by publishing this article. No guide for that matter can check the authenticity of the article more than this and I did so. To day after reading these postings, I spoke to the first author. In the first instance, he declined the copying. I told him to go through both the articles and send me the truth by mail. I got the mail as under: *" Sir, As you phoned today regarding the article, I have taken/copied some (may be 15 to 20%) of the literature like abstract, references from the particular article but the data was from my survey I have copied the methodology only, not fully copied. And I used the same schedule to survey the colleges at Gadag City. One more thing that I referred all the references and collected the literature from references. It may be same what I had collected and the author of particular article copied from same references. Sir, Once again I wish to tell you that I have not copied full article as it is. I am very sorry for the same. Further, here onwards, I will not copy or put any same information what the other articles have. And the article published in SRELS was reviewed by experts also." Now I have two options before me: One to request the publishers of the journal to withdraw the article from the journal database. Two to surrender all my academic publications back to the profession. Because a sentence used by my friend has touched ma a lot. In my entire currier I have never taken any black spot like this. I have published more than 50 articles (most of them are available on Google scholar). If any of them are traced as pleagured, I will leave my profession on the same day. Just because of the foolish act of my student, I have to be targeted by immatured statements like: *"Those who have the power and money move up to the ladder no matter what their academic credentials are."* I do not know whome this statement is aiming at. But I request my younger generation Librarians to be little cautious while making statements in the forums like this. Secondly my request to all research guides to be cautious before allowing their Research Scholars to put their names as a co-author. *However I leave the judgement to the members of this forum and I assure that I will be abide by your judgement With very high regard to the profession at large. -- *Dr. P.
