A research publication brings immense credit to the researcher(s), their research supervisor(s) and their institution(s). However, plagiarism that creeps in publications widely now in our context, often unintentionally, presents great risks to them and damage their credibility and reputation. Plagiarism - reusing someone else's work and making it appear as their own without proper citations - is an unacceptable and unethical practice in research and other forms of writing. It may also result in copyright infringement subjecting the author to legal action. Professional institutions such as IEEE blacklist the authors who plagiarise their publications endangering their career. Moreover, it is now easier to detect plagiarism, autonomously. Therefore, it is vital for students, authors and their institutions to take specific measures to avoid plagiarism. The rise of plagiarism in this digital era is primarily due to lack of awareness of what is considered as plagiarism, how it can get into a publication, the risks it presents and methods of avoiding it. This one-day workshop is intended to create the desired awareness among the stakeholder about plagiarism and outline measures to prevent it and, thereby, to help them safeguard from the plagiarism risks. About the Program ============== The workshop comprises of two major sessions. The morning session will present an overview on plagiarism, outlines major issues and risks in plagiarism, and suggest (institutional) measures combat this seemingly growing problem facing researchers, authors, educational institutions and conference organisers. The afternoon session will discuss in detail of how to avoid plagiarism in academic writing - journal and conference publications, thesis and others - while highlighting and acknowledging findings and contributions of other authors and researchers. It will also outline proper way of quoting and citing contents from other publications. The program will consist of invited presentations, discussions and Q&A sessions. Dear Library Professionals, I under the guidance of my mentor, Charles Greenberg are conducting a survey on the involvement of librarian in protection of human research subjects. This survey is for an IFLA paper that I am writing with him. The excerpts from the abstract are: As the scope of human subject research expands beyond traditional biomedical frontiers, the ability to apply vigilance to educate, inform, and protect humans of all ages strains the capacity of many institutions to apply a thorough and rigorous standard at all times. The most widely recognized mechanism to assess human protections in a research proposal is an institutional review board (IRB), also known as an independent ethics committee (IEC) or ethical review board, which are often mandated for institutions in some countries. This paper is based on an environmental scan of current librarian involvement in protection of human research subjects as part of a proposed research paper for IFLA 2014. If you know a librarian who has contact, please pass this message to those that either serve an IRB or IEC or other form of bioethics review group that is charged with protecting human research subjects. Plagiarism, Copyright, Publishers and Authors

Dear friends, Plagiarism is a burning topic in LIS community now-a-days. Many workshops, seminars have been organized on copyright laws and plagiarism. Everybody knows that plagiarism is unethical, but in-spite of that nothing has changed. Authors and Publishers both are still involved in this practice. On this forum, I would like to draw kind attention of all the readers on two instances of Plagiarism. My one paper "Design and Development of a Himalayan Studies Information System for India: A Proposed Model" was published in INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND LIBRARIES, Vol. 24, No. 1 (2005). This journal is being published by Library and Information Technology Association (LITA),- a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The same full paper was published as one of the chapters of the book entitled "Forests of Himalaya" by Anuraj Diwedi in 2009. This book was published by CYBER TECH PUBLICATIONS, Darya Ganj, New Delhi. Author has not given citation of my paper. Like this publisher, many publishers in India have emerged in recent years which prepare the books by cut and paste technique. In such type of books there will be no affiliation of the author. These publishers give the author's bio-data like.... Mr. Anuraj Diwedi is a seasoned teacher over three decades........he has been honoured by various scientific organizations.....A prolific writer, he has many outstanding books....etc. The other example is of one of my paper "Career in Library and Information Science" which was published in the August 2008 issue of Employment News - which is one of the most widely circulated newspapers of India. From this article, much of the portion was copied by two faculty members and one senior LIS professionals and none of them cited this paper. Now the two important questions are: 1. Is it possible that these publishers, authors, LIS professionals or teachers are unaware of copyright laws and plagiarism? 2. What is the responsibility of ISBN awarding agency, who awarded ISBN without checking the author's affiliations. Plagiarism is rising day by day in education system. We have seen many prominent persons in the field of education who have been caught in this act. The 'copy/cut and paste' tendency has increased the plagiarism. Rather than organizing seminars, workshops or training on IT tools like Turnitin, we should focus on teaching value education and ethics to authors, publishers and teachers.
