Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University, Under the UGC-Special Assistance Programme (SAP DRS-I) is going to organize a National Conference on “Knowledge Management in Libraries and Information Centers (KMLIC-2015)” on 18th – 19th March, 2015. *Introduction* Knowledge Management (KM) is an influential tool for promoting uniqueness, realizing and re-engineering the various aspects of day-to-day activities of an organization. Knowledge Management is a new research area which is developing very rapidly. In the current knowledge economy, the survival of organization depends on how good it manages the knowledge to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. Information professionals should also evolve and adopt the knowledge environment by implementing knowledge management in their field. Knowledge management represents an opportunity by entrusting new roles and responsibilities for libraries and LIS professionals. LIS professionals have to gain new skills and involve themselves effectively in knowledge management practices to become relevant to their organisations to enable them to have a competitive edge for employment to people from other industries. The ultimate purpose of KM is to increase the effectiveness and sustainability of organizations, particularly in case of libraries and information centers. Although the concept of KM originated in the business field, but in practice it has now spread to the non-profit sector as well. Libraries as non-profit making organisations, improve their communication both horizontally and vertically thus promoting a sharing culture. It is for the same implications that the conference is being organised to pool up both the knowledge and experiences of the professionals working in the areas of KM and discuss the tools of managing the assets of knowledge. The conference is enveloping mostly on the various facets of Knowledge Management and its application in Libraries and Information Centers, thrived particularly with the following objectives: - To create awareness and provide a platform for exchange of ideas concerning tacit and explicit knowledge - To share knowledge and skills among academicians/ LIS professionals/ other knowledge based professionals working in private and public sector. - To understand knowledge management tools and their usage in KM initiatives. - To provide an opportunity to share innovative ideas and plans in the areas of KM. To identify suitable initiatives in implementing KM in the library and information centers. *About AMU* Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), established in 1920, A.M.U. is one of the oldest central government funded universities in India. It was evolved out of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College (MAO College), which was set up by the great visionary and social reformer, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1877. From its very inception, it has kept its door open to the members of all communities and from all corners of the country and the world. It occupies a unique position amongst universities and institutions of higher learning in the country. The main campus of AMU is located in the city of Aligarh. Quite recently, the University has been ranked among the best educational institutions in India. According to Times Higher Education Asia Ranking 2014, AMU has ranked 3rd among all Universities in India. It Ranked 50th among top 100 institutions of higher learning in BRICS grouping-2014 and 5th in The Week-Hansa Research (Best Universities Survey) 2014. *About Department* The foundation of the Department of Library Science was laid way back in 1950-51 with the introduction of a 'Certificate Course in Library Science,' by the then University Librarian, (Late) Padmashree Prof. S. Bashiruddin, who later on introduced a full time ‘Bachelor of Library Science' course in 1958-59 with full time Lecturers for the first time in the country. Subsequently, 'Master of Library Science' was introduced in1970-71 and Ph.D in 1990-91. A special feature of the revised syllabi is the emphasis on Information Technology and hands-on training on a number of library automation software packages. A well-equipped computer lab supports the revised syllabi with Internet facility. The seminar library of the department is the first fully automated library of the university. The teachers of the department have also received training in Information Technology within the country and also abroad. Presently the department is headed by the chairman Prof. Shabahat Husain, who has been recently conferred with the Prof. S.P Narang Research Promotion Award by Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS). The department has had the distinction of completing a number of DST and UGC major research projects by designing and developing L.I.S. Subject Gateway (*http://www.itsubjectgateway.info/ <http://www.itsubjectgateway.info/>)* and E-Learning portal (*http://lislearning.in/ <http://lislearning.in/>*). As a Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof Shabahat Husain developed ‘Social Science Cyber Library’ (*www.socsccybraryamu.ac.in <http://www.socsccybraryamu.ac.in>*), inaugurated by His Excellency Shri Pranab Mukherjee on 27.12.2013 as a part of inaugural programme of XXXVII Social Science Congress held from 27th to 31st December 2013. The Social Science Cyber Library which is first of its kind in the whole world is being used in 63 countries so far. Under the UGC’s Programme, the Department was awarded Special Assistance Programme SAP (DRS-I) in the financial year 2013-2014 for five years. The theme of the project is Knowledge Management with Prof.Shabahat Husain as its Coordinator and Dr. Naushad Ali.P.M as its Dy. Coordinator. It is really a sad news. Recently, I had met him in a conference recently organized by Besant College, Mangalore. He was very active person and made his presence noticeable with his valuable remarks and advice to college librarians. Our life is a "Jatakaa Bandi", Vidhi is its "saaheba/owner" and he decides our journey. I pray for peaceful life of departed life. Kalyan passed away around 5 PM on 9th Jan 2015. It is learnt that he was admitted to Ramaiah Hospital on 8th evening probably due to heart attack. I learnt about this sad demise only around 9.15 PM, Only few friends, who learnt about this news bit early and who stayed near to his house could get the opportunity to pay last respects to the departed soul personally as the body was taken around 10 PM to a his village near Dharwad for last rites. He served as Head, Technical Information Centre at BEL, Bangaluru for long period. He was General Secretary of Karnataka State Library Association for a long period and was professionally active even after retirement by way of delivering invited lectures in Seminars/Conferences, IGNOU contact classes, etc. He was very friendly and jolly person, who contributed a lot the professional development. Sad demise of Mr. V.L.Kalyan

Dear Professional friends, It is a shocking news to hear that Mr.V.L.Kalyan is no more. One of the very active professional and a very humble professional passed away on 9th Jan 2015 after a brief illness. Mr. Kalyan was very affectionate friend to not only to me and my family but as well to all professionals in the state and admired by his students in IGNOU for which he has been an academic counsellor for more than a decade. He served in various organisations like in ITC, Bharat Electronics for a very long time and after retirement he was library advisor at Indian Statistical Institute for two years. Very active in all professional conferences and seminars and has also served as a resource person for CEP. He was also Gen Secretary of KALA and actively associated with Dept. of Public Libraries. The profession is poorer by his demise and we pray almighty to his soul rest in peace and convey our heartfelt condolenses to his bereaved family. It is a bad period for the profession as we lost four veterans in the span of nearly a month. This will continue the emerging series of International Training Workshops which CODATA is seeking to establish with a variety of partners. The International Training Workshop will take place at the Indian Statistical Institute in Bangalore, India on 9-20 March 2015. Objective: The intensive, two week residential course has as its objective to train early and mid-career data professionals in using latest technology and techniques in Big Data management and its exploitation. Eligible Participants The workshop is targeted at early and mid-career data professionals. The definition is deliberately flexible to allow candidates from a variety of backgrounds to make a case. IndusTree: CXO Power Talk (14) "Training for Leadership -- the Air Force Way" by Air Marshal Ramesh Rai, VM Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief HQ Training Command, Indian Air Force Date: Friday, January 9, 2015 Time: 11:30 to 12:30 pm Venue: Athena Auditorium, MYRA Talk Summary Air Marshal Ramesh Rai, V M was commissioned as a fighter pilot on December 9, 1976. He flew GNat and Jaguar aircraft in the initial years and subsequently commanded a Jaguar Squadron. He is an Experimental Test Pilot and Cat ‘A’ Flying Instructor with approximately 4,500 hours of flying to his credit. He is the recipient of the Suranjan Das Trophy and Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Trophy for standing first in test pilots courses and for being best in flying. He has held important command and staff appointments at Air Head Quarters as Joint Director, Air War Strategy Cell, Director, Air Staff Requirements and as our Defence Attache at the Embassy of India in Tel Aviv, Israel. Later, he commanded Advance HQ at Kolkata and Air Force Station, Bidar. The high mark of his tenure at Air Force Station Bidar was the induction of the HAWK Aircraft in the Indian Air Force, wherein he pioneered the Training System on this Advanced Jet Trainer. He served as Senior Air and Administration Staff Officer of Maintenance Command at Nagpur, and was the Chief Instructor (Air) at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, prior to elevation to the Rank of Air Marshal on June 1, 2012. He served as Senior Air Staff Officer of Central Air Command before taking over as Air Officer Commanding in-Chief, Training Command. He was commended by Air Office Commander–in-Chief, Eastern Air Command and Chief of Air Staff for his flying skills and devotion to duty. He was awarded with Vayu Sena Medal by the President of India on January 26, 1999 for his Distinguished services to the nation.
