This is a topic after my heart. Ever since I became a qualified librarian in 1990 (a little late in my life, as I stayed at home for 12 years after graduation) I have been feeling that the average person does not know enough about the work done by librarians. As I grew in the profession, (it is now 25 years), I have noted this all along. If in India, the country of Dr SRR, we still get a question - "Oh, do you have to do a special course for being a librarian? Is it after 10th or 12th?"... and so on, something is wrong somewhere. As another person said "How many of us have sent our own children to the profession"? There is no question that there are hundreds of excellent librarians in the country, but that has not still changed the fact that a vast majority of the population knows little about librarianship. In mails written by others, several reasons and suggestions have been stated, and almost all are excellent. I personally feel (these are my own views) - that a) Each of us must do our best work and project the work to our target group and to society in general (this CAN be done without boasting) b) Collectively, each of our associations have to do lots of selfless work to change things for future professionals and for society The 2nd is not obviously easy, but if dedicated people work this way, things CAN change. Let me share personal experiences. Some of you in this group know me. I gave up working in libraries several years ago, and today I run a not for profit Trust as well as a company. The company does work that brings in some money to keep our office running. The Trust operates in the area of Medical Education and Research - we teach all health science students, staff and professionals - the techniques of online searching and managing their references Initially people asked "why do you have to teach us how to search". With persistent efforts, today we are regularly contacted for lectures and workshops. The positives today: - Through our Trust, my colleagues and I have conducted a good no of workshops and have delivered lots of lectures, both - across the country - I personally am included in the list of medical teachers who are recognized faculty for research methodology workshops - I get contacted for assistance by several doctors and health professionals for guidance in online searching and more - With so much reaffirmation, we are now creating E-Learning courses, which we hope to make available by the end of this year The challenges: - Funding - and making concerned authorities sensitive to this! - Prioritizing the importance of searching correctly, and referencing correctly - and so - including such a component of teaching in the curriculum I will state that I have worked at this with taking no salary for the first five years, and then a minimal for some more time, and even today a modest salary from the company. I take the opportunity of giving lectures whenever I travel on a holiday, just to make people aware that they need to know more about correct online searching. I try and give time to youngsters who seek advice - (whatever I can help them with) But - what I am doing is still a drop in the ocean. As I said - we need people coming together to make a change... with the coming generations in mind. The awareness of the importance of libraries and librarianship has to begin in school. Dear Professional Comrades, It is quite unfortunate to join a discussion about our own status. I have no capacity to support or negate the points raised by the veterans in LIS like Dr. Gouder and Dr. Harinarayana. However, as a professional who is always keen about the profession, I am adding a few things which I learned though my 22 years of voyage in the profession. Library profession is facing crucial challenges due to the following reasons: 1. *The name itself:* The name Librarian sounds that he/she is only a custodian of books. The world of book has changed. Not our academics including librarians. 2. *The ego clash between teachers and librarians:* Though the librarians are treated at par with teachers even by UGC, other subject teachers including the library science teachers (not all) are not ready to accept librarians as teacher even if they are having UGC scale and status. Many of our teachers are above UGC and treat librarians as peons or clerks. 3. *Lack of knowledge contribution:* Library and information science is almost dying because there is no new additional contribution to the subject from the academics and researchers. Most of the researches are conventional and contributing nothing to the subject. The only addition to the subject is application of information technology. Technology people will overpower the profession if librarians are reluctant to harness the technology. 4. *The question whether we need libraries:* Even the academics and administrators often raise the question whether we need libraries in the light of the availability of e-content even in mobile phones. *The ignorance of the so called academics and administrators coupled with lethargy of the library professionals created the present situation*. 5. *Inactive/ineffective library associations:* Library associations in India are either inactive or inefficient. Most of the library associations are only workshop/seminar conducting associations which contribute nothing to the subject or profession. *Suggestions:* 1. Change of name of librarians in tune with the nomenclature in management / technology/teaching. 2. A proactive library association which will accredit library schools and enroll library professionals looking seriously into the matter of standard. This association shall be the voice of the profession and a link between the professionals and government and other organs. Congratulations and best wishes to 'MyDLIS' of Mysore University on their Golden Jubilee Celebrations. We all know that, It takes quite a lot of effort, determination and leadership skill to organize events of this magnitude. And many of us have noticed that, to MyDLIS, it has become a habit! - Lot of credit goes to their luminary alumni members, namely Prof. Shalini Urs, NV Sathyanarayana, Prof. VG Talwar & MyDLIS staff and so on... Great to see MyDLIS celebrating Golden jubilee. As Dr. Harinarayana mentioned they are in a festive mood and have planned a grand event not only for their Alumni but also for the profession. I believe that, this effort of Mysore University and MyDLIS is an inspiration for others and also sets a benchmark - for celebrations - in terms of scope, size, scale & magnitude of the event. The role & importance of alumni associations in modern days is very significant and is best understood and benefitted by very few LIS schools in India. I guess, MyDLIS of Mysore university stands in the front row. Coming to the views/comments by Dr. IRN Goudar, it appears that, he intended/suggested to offer opportunity/platform for MyDLIS alumni. Throughout the year MyDLIS is actively engaged itself to celebrate and share our joy with alumni and other well wishers. The culmination of these activities will be in the form of Golden Jubilee Summit and International Conference during June 18-20, 2015. There is a Meet and Greet program for alumni on morning of 18th June exclusively for MyDLIS alumni. Hurry Up! Register yourselves for the events! The preparations are in full swing. Godfathers or Ghost writers Dear professionals I condemn on sharing an authorship in articles or any kind of publication with students, research scholar/ colleagues who have put zero efforts in making an article. Professors, librarians and many others experts are courteous enough to be involved in this activity. Why I am feeling bad for it is that Master degree dissertations are turning to be an articles. here students will put a lot of efforts mentally and physically to complete dissertation, as soon as the dissertation is completed the ghost writers will be born to the same articles, when the article is made a scholar who has worked hard for preparing dissertation may not get an authorship or sometimes he/she may be the last author. Scholar may also become mirthless when another person name who is not concerned in any way is put in his/her work. So here is my sincere obsecration to all professionals who are writing paper for the career betterment of their colleagues/students to stop this activity. Let us be faithful in producing genuine researcher. Please never and ever help any slacker to be an author in any publications. If you really want to help your students or colleague to grow in their line of career, impart your knowledge but kindly do not share authorship with any slacker because it may affect on genuine researcher. Sometimes No. of articles published may be effectual factor in getting a job. According to the guidelines given by UGC, academic performance of any professionals will be assessed based on APIs. That's the No of publication they make. So, Just for the sake of getting points fake authors are produced by our professionals. I personally feel that APIs shouldn't be assessed based on number of publications therefore Impact factor of Journals in which the publications are made, citation and H-index only these factors has to be considered for constituting API score but unfortunately we can't do anything for the UGC's decision in this regard. Another shameful thing is that many journals are headed with editorial board but they don't even bother about the quality of articles. Without having a look at the paper they just publish as they receive from the authors. Sorry to point out that even if u put any vulgar word in a paper they don't even identify it and publish the paper in their journal. It can be a simple example of how the editorial board is failed to care for papers. Seeing this I have really become dumbfounded and don't know what these so called editors are doing. Eventually I would like to tell my feelings on our great Godfathers or Ghost writers that I am really not happy and feeling comfortable with these kinds of happenings in our field. For me it's really a matter of shame and I considered it as an offense. Although each one of the researchers actually works on a different research question, there are many common problems that most of the researchers face. The quality of a piece of research is a function of the quality of data, the data analysis tools employed and the way the research outcome is presented. Some of the questions that most researchers face are: - How does one go about selecting a research problem? - What is a hypothesis? How to formulate hypotheses? - What are the most appropriate methods for data collection and the relevant statistical tools / tests for data analysis? How to decide on the appropriate instrument for data collection and how to design one? How to analyze and present data? How to interpret data? - What is technical writing and what are the components of a good technical report / theses? How to present ideas in technical writing? Objectives of the Workshop The workshop aims at answering the questions stated above. The workshop faculty is drawn from a pool of eminent professors who have long and rich experience both as researchers in their own individual capacity and as research supervisors at the Ph.D. level. The workshop methodology will employ case studies to illustrate and explain in addition to lectures supplemented by slides and discussions.
