SCHOOL LIBRARY LIES IN NEGLECT A treasure of books at Queen Mary's Girls High School gathering dust. The school has 52 teachers with 49 women teachers and three men. The library room remained locked as there was no post of librarian. A booklet titled Telugu Action Songs meant for schoolchildren compiled by Bernard Lucas and published by Addison &Co in 1892; Kautilyarthasastram, a translation of the famous book by renowned scholar Mamidipudi Venkatarangaiah and Akundi Venkata Sastry and published in 1923 in Vizianagaram; Winston Churchill's The Gathering Storm, the first volume of his autobiographical work in the years prior to World War II - these books are among the many gathering dust in the wooden almirahs. Any attempt to just pick a book might leave a few severed leaves in your hand. Even as another National Library Week concluded on Friday, there has been no effort by the government to look at the treasure trove leave alone protect it. The century-old Government Queen Mary's Girls High School has a treasure of books acquired over a long period during its various avatars as nursing school, basic training school to train women teachers and finally the high school. Encyclopaedias of science, literature, on teacher training, some published in London and Lahore before Partition lie unread, uncured and uncared for years together now adorned by a thick layer of dust. A cloth as protective cover hangs over the ad hoc librarian's chair to shield him from peels falling off the traditional lime-mix roof. Twenty-seven to 28 almirahs are packed with books. Drawing teacher T. Anil Joshi who took upon himself the task of managing the library by issuing new books provided by the government to children estimates that the number of books could be upwards of 5,000. The school has 52 teachers with 49 women teachers and three men. The library room remained locked as there was no post of librarian. Tough task Salvaging the books in the Queen Mary's Girls High School library is a tough task. When drawing teacher Anil Joshi first opened an almirah he found about 150 books eaten by termites and crumbled in his hands "For two years now, I have been opening the alimarahs, spending money on applying some insecticide to prevent further damage to books," he says. The books have to be categorised, analysed for their value and utility and finally digitized to preserve them for posterity. However, the accumulated dust and the condition of the room that is cramped because of the number of almirahs makes taking up any restoration work difficult. Besides funds and expert help is required to catalogue and protect the books. The library room is hardly conducive to take up any sustained reading. "We feared opening the almirahs because we do not know how to handle them and are afraid of taking up the task as it might invite criticism," says a former headmaster. The school is headed by headmistress of a deputy DEO cadre which is mandatory to draw salaries and issue certificates to students. Inclusion of E-Books in Library Accession Register

Dear Friends, I need few clarifications on E-book Collection in the library. Our institute is offering PG and UG courses approved by AICTE. As per AICTE norms, 25% of the total number of titles and volumes each can be in the form of e- books. In this scenario, (1) should we write the details of the E-Books that are purchased in to the Accession Register? (2) If so, whether the same accession register that is used for print books is to used? (3) If yes, we have to input the details of those e-books in the Library Software also, which would be visible to the user / patron in the OPAC which may prompt for document loan request.... (4) How are those E-books disseminated to the users? That is, whether it is downloaded and maintained in the local server or on request from user, whether it is partially given to the users in pen-drive, E-mail attachment, etc. (5) Finally, when we show the statistics to AICTE or similar authorities, can we include the no. of E-books also into the Books category? I am sure, few of my colleagues those who are working in Engineering Colleges will have similar doubts, as they are likely to be in similar situation. Friends who are having e-book collection and using it extensively and senior professionals who are evaluating for AICTE or NBA may be able to help me. The idea is to support a library to grow into a professional and model library by adopting it for a year. After a brief survey, MyLISA decided to adopt the ‘Arivu School Library’ for the academic year 2015-16. We would like share some of the Key events organized under this initiative at Arivu: 1. Interaction between the school authorities and a group lead by MyLISA on activities during library hour and automation of Arivu library. The group included Smt. Dear Professional Colleagues, I removed all the breaks in the trailing mail and made it as a running text. At the outset, the discussion was started to suggest some guidelines while seeking help from library professionals. Now the discussion topic appears to be diverted to copyright related issues. I request and suggest, let publishers and database aggregators post a weekly Tip on copyright issues (about few paras) so that readers can read it. (like Management Tips from Harvard Business School). Coming the original topic, I request all our professionals 1. Do make some homework before posting request for papers on forums. 2. Send details of the paper in the body of mail instead of sending a link alone. 3. Make the list short, so that the response may be more positive. A big list of request papers may get deleted without response. 4. Reveal your identity through your signature. One need not hesitate or shy of revealing the identity. The signature may motivate many people to respond. 5. your close friends may know your Orgn and workplace.. But most of the professionals may not know you. 5. If your library is not a member of DELNET, become its member. It is not expensive NAAC accreditation look for association with such networks. 6. The trailing mails has mentioned many other forums which can be searched while looking for information. 7. Try to contact Author for help. The author may have author's copy of the paper. They may help. 8. If you know the availability of resources in a special kind of library, try to contact them for help. The response may be encouraging. Let us not throw mud on each other. Not replying/rejecting mails, which don't have signature and details of the papers is not a solution. We are in cooperative and resource sharing age. Article Request: Not a Professional Way to Approach through Forums

Dear Sir/Madam, Approaching for request for article in forum is not at all a healthy practice. We must not encourage professionals to post request for articles in LIS Forum except in a very rare cases. Once they get the required article through somebody they continue that practice without subscribing a particular journal or becoming a member of DELNET or other similar networks. Sometime they make it a habit of sending requests for sending 10 to 15 articles even more than that. Even though some of the articles available freely on the web through central repositories/institutional repositories they won't search and find. They rely somebody for articles.
