DRTC Colloquium on Application of Knowledge Organization System Abstract Knowledge Organization is a hot topic in the field of Library and Information Science and in 21st century. To survive in the competitive environment, libraries should manage their corporate knowledge resources more effectively because KO system is intended to encompass all types of schemes for organizing information and promoting knowledge management. The main objective of the KO is providing structured access to information by both way syntactically and semantically and improves information finding, use and assimilation by structured presentation of information to the users. This kind of system will help the resources, processes, and policies for analyzing user needs.This colloquium explains the evolution aspect of knowledge organization, and then reviews strategies and methods of organizing knowledge resources and its mapping. The center has set up necessary infrastructure both in terms of hardware and software to support DL activities. In this regard, we plan to recruit few Graduate (MLIS)/Diploma (LIS/Computer Science) Trainees. The tenure of the trainees' scheme is strictly for ONE year. While the Graduate trainees would get a stipend of Rs. 3500/- p.m, the Diploma Trainees will get 2,500/- p.m. Apart from the digitization activities, the incumbents may be involved in other activities including database creation etc. Preference will be given to those candidates having computer skills. Lis-forum members are requested to circulate this information to others. Those who are appearing for their examination during May 2005 are also eligible to apply. Sorry for Cross Postings Dear Professionals: Many of the university libraries must be having access to Inflibnet E-Journals. We, at DEI have recently started accessing e-journals through Inflibnet. And, I need to monitor the usage of the e-journals and derive statistics over a period of an year. Can any body please tell me as to how to strategise and implement this task? Is it possible for a librarian to keep track of the usage, either by means of computers or by any other method? The first in a series of occasional columns called "Skywritings: Scholarly and Leisurely". This inaugural column brings readers up to speed on current OA issues, to set the stage for future columns. Excerpt: 'The mainstay of an author's research usage and impact is, and will remain, the publication of the article in the best possible peer-reviewed journal in its field. The bulk of the usage and citations will come from those users who have an individual or institutional subscription or site-license to the journal in which it is published (and, increasingly, to the online version of that journal). But the online age has also provided a way for authors to maximize their articles' usage and impact by supplementing this paid access to the publisher's official version of their article with an open access version of the article that authors self-archive on their own institutional websites for any would-be users webwide who cannot afford the paid access to the publisher's official version. A growing number of studies is showing that articles that have been supplemented with such self-archived versions have higher (and sometimes substantially higher) citation impacts than articles that have not been self-archived. All parties to the research publication and production co-benefit from this supplementary open-access self-archiving: Authors, their institutions, their funders, their publishers, and research itself. The author receives more citations (as well as more downloads). The institution has greater research impact, and its research output is more visible, attracting more researchers, students, and research funding.
