Workshop on Digital Libraries, New Delhi 10-13 April 2007 The Workshop on Digital Libraries is being organized by TERI with support from Technology Information Facilitation Programme of DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research), Government of India. The aim of the Workshop is to equip participants with adequate practical knowledge so as to enable them to efficiently carry out digital library projects. The workshop will be held at TERI, IHC Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. For more details about the workshop, please visit the website http://www.teriin.org/events/dlworkshop Workshop Objectives: · Familiarize participants with the concepts of digital library and institutional repository · Facilitate understanding of digitization and practical knowledge on the digitization process · Offer hands-on experience to develop digital libraries and use of open-source software such as DSpace and GSDL (Greenstone Digital Library) · Help participants develop practical skills in the installation of open source software for creation and implementation of digital libraries Programme: The workshop programme will include tutorial-type presentations, demonstrations, practical sessions. It will cover the following topics: · Issues and challenges of developing digital libraries · Role of institutional repositories in open access movement · Understanding the digitization process: scanning, OCR (optical character recognition), and conversion · DSpace: overview, installation, and administration · GSDL: overview, installation, and administration · Converting CDS/ISIS databases to GSDL · Dublin Core metadata standards · OAI?PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) The faculty will comprise of digital library experts from TERI and other institutes. Participants: The workshop is intended for library and information professionals, knowledge managers, information entrepreneurs, and e-content developers, who have an interest or are involved in setting up digital repositories in their organizations. She was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday honours list in 2000, and became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the same year. She is also a Fellow of the British Computer Society, the Institute of Engineering and Technology (formerly the IEE) and the City and Guilds of London Institute. She was recently awarded the 2006 Anita Borg Award for Technical Leadership. In her talk "Towards a science of the Web", Dr Wendy Hall will discuss how hypertext visionaries foresaw a richly inter-linked global information network and how the Web provided the infrastructure to enable those ideas to become reality but strangely devoid of links. She will explain the development of the Semantic Web which promises a richly linked future and will enable more intelligent information retrieval. She will look at how the Web evolved from its early simple incarnation to the massive global information structure it is today, and how search engines enable us to make sense of this very complex environment. There is a growing realization among many researchers that if we want to model the Web and understand its future trajectory; if we want to understand the architectural principles that have provided for its growth and the applications they enable; and if we want to be sure that it supports the basic social values of trustworthiness, privacy, and respect for social boundaries, then we must chart out a research agenda that targets the Web as a primary focus of attention.
