Ministry of Culture focuses on Preservation of Palm Leaf Manuscripts The Minister of Tourism and Culture Smt. Ambika Soni has said that rare palm leaf manuscripts are preserved and protected scientifically under the National Mission for Manuscripts, through the network of 33 Manuscript Conservation Centres and their partner centres, spread all over the country. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today she said, under the Mission no state-wise allocation of funds is made. However, the details of the amount spent under the Mission during the last three years are as under: Year Allocation ( In Rs. Crore) 2004-05 3.47 2005-06 7.90 2006-07 9.43 (USD 2.3 million) Under the National Mission for Manuscripts (http://www.namami.org) digitization of important manuscripts in the country is taken up to prepare a national database of important manuscripts ( http://www.namami.org/pdatabase.aspx) This is an ongoing process and, therefore, no deadline can be fixed. However, since the launch of the Mission in 2003, more than 15,000 manuscripts containing 2.2 million manuscript pages have already been digitized . A large number of new manuscripts, running into thousands, have been unearthed under the Mission. The National Mission for Manuscripts helps in spreading awareness about the manuscript heritage of India through awareness campaigns, workshops, National surveys, exhibitions, public lectures and publication of books on manuscripts. Now i have been assigned the job to set up the library. Initial work like preparing a consitution and rules and regulation have been done. Now i need suggestions on following points :- (i) Though we are collecting donation both book and cash, but library can not be run just on donation. any suggestion for self-sustainable funding pattern. (ii) the reading habit these days as all members knows almost becomes nil amongst students who has become career-oreinted. what can be done to increase footfall or membership of the library. (iii) Is there any NGOS or body who can help or advice in the matter? (iv) we are also planning few social activities like computer teaching, coaching for poor and deserving students, english speaking course and teaching other life-sustainign skilss. we need advice from experienced people or NGOs and also needs volunteers in Delhi. (v) any other suggestion on any matters pertaining to our library we need valuable advice to make our venture successful. Introducing the Open Library

Dear all, The Open Library is an ambitious project to build a free internet library with all the books in the world. Not just every book on sale, or every important book, or even every book in English, but simply every book which is ever published on this planet. It is not simply a library that is free to public, but a product of the people: letting them create and curate its catalogue, contribute to its content, participate in its governance, and have full, free access to its data. In the initial phase of the project, we are trying to collect all the book catalogues from various libraries and publishers all over the world. Adopting Document Standards

According to a recent IDC survey entitled Adoption of Document Standards commissioned by Microsoft, organizations are increasingly interested in employing XML-based standards, primarily due to interoperability between tools and ease of transition from existing document bases to new standards. Findings include: 1) Large organizations with diverse business needs prefer multiple document standards. 2) Although IT managers appear to strongly prefer a single standard to reduce cost and complexity of implementation, line-of-business managers closer to the daily needs of business support the desire for multiple document standards. 3) PDF, Open XML, and OpenDocument Format are all in use today, with PDF viewed as the dominant standard and Open XML demonstrating "more traction in the market compared to other XML-based standards." 4) Companies in Europe with an interest in Open XML expect to be piloting or fully deploying the standard a year from today. Those interested in ODF are more likely to be in the "consideration" phase rather than piloting or fully deploying it within that same time frame. The convergence of the computing and communications has also brought a radical change in the way libraries and information centres have been im parting information to the users. There is a paradigm shift from the information based services to the Knowledge based services as Knowledge is considered as a most powerful fact in the development of an economy of a nation and is the fourth wave experien ced by the human lives. In these changing scenarios, the libraries have to take a proactive approach and to work for this tectonic change that the Knowledge Society will encompass in its domain. The library professionals can no longer keep themselves in t he insulated state away from the challenges which needs to be addressed by them. The Government of India has constituted under the National Knowledge Commission a special group on Libraries and Informatics and has proposed a! knowledge based society and the emergence of libraries and network centres as one of the contributing entities for developing a knowledge based society. There is a greater need to provide the citizen focused services and the library services must focus on the common man and we must ensure that the libraries are able to bridge up the gap between the two tiered society of �Knowledge haves� and �knowledge have-nots� It is with this concern that the National Convention on Knowledge, Library and Information Networking (NACLIN 2007) being organized by DELNET at New Delhi in November 2007 to debate various issues on the subject. NACLIN was conceived in the year 1998 and since then Nine National Conventions have been organized in different parts of the country in collaboration with the institutions of great repute. DELNET is celebrating the 10th NACLIN event by hosting it themselv es at New Delhi. DELNET - Developing Library Network DELNET is a major resource-sharing library network in South Asia which covers a wide spectrum of member-libraries and their resources connecting more than 1070 libraries in thirty states in India and six overseas countries. Started in 1988 at the India In ternational Centre in New Delhi it was registered as a society in 1992. Delnet is committed to pool the information about resources scattered in the libraries in the country and consolidate information through union catalogues, union lists and other data bases. This is being done to satisfy the major information requirements of students, researchers, scholars and the public in the country. DELNET is extensively providing Interlibrary Loan facilities to its member libraries in and outside the country and is one of the most widely used and popular services of DELNET. DELNET databases has crossed more than six million records. DELNET has shifted to its newly constructed building in JNU Campus in October 2005.
