The brief information about the lecture by Dr. Sridhar and the subsequent interaction with students reveal that the session would have been very fruitful and lively. To me the crux of the problem lies in the decreasing reading habit among youths and students. Why so? The problem lies in the methodology of education and teaching. He said one in five books published and one out of three books borrowed from libraries are related to IT. If IT eliminates the printed books, why this trend he questioned. Dr. Sridhar presented some of the quality issues that need to be taken note of by the Internet users. Authenticity and accuracy are the major ones. Libraries are more reliable source for a common man. Filtering mechanism adopted in libraries ensures the quality and accuracy. On the other hand, Internet is increasingly becoming more popular creating the impression that libraries are no more required. Dr. Sridhar trying to rationalise this trend said accessibility, ease of use and perceived utility are the major factors for popularity of Internet. He opined that Internet and IT are supplement to the libraries and in real perspectives they are not threats. Giving some tips for students Dr. Sridhar said that domain knowledge (library based skills), communication, research bent of mind, reading habit and ICT skills are the expected core competencies by the employers. He said that competition for job is increasing as number of qualified professionals coming out of library schools has increasing drastically. A huge chunk of graduates are coming out of library schools from open universities. This has created an imbalance between supply and demand as for as library professionals are concerned. In this context Dr. Sridhar gave advice to the students that they should go for specialization and be ready when the opportunity arises. Dr. Sridhar's lecture was followed by an interesting and elaborate interactive session. Students asked varieties of questions and sought clarifications on various intriguing issues. Library education

Dear All, This refers to the ongoing discussion on library training or subject specialisation of the grooming librarians. Librarians should emerge as knowledge managers in their institution, on their specific subject and in the community around them particularly because we live in a knowledge society. For that we should learn the specific subjects, our library handles, with the eagerness of a Professor and keep in touch with the information technologies like an enthusiastic computer man. He should not ignore the core library subjects and his role in the knowledge generation-supply-use chain. It is the duty of the enterprising library school student or young professionals to learn themselves all these by continuous efforts. It is better if the library schools provide a basic frame and motivation rather than teaching all necessary subjects. It is impossible too as the library schools may have that much subject expertise. The situation of most of our library schools are far from satisfactory to groom capable library professionals. If some professionals coming out from the schools are performing good. it may be because they hav put in extra efforts and have used their common sense well. I think it is high time to look at the deficiencies in our profession and use the excellent opportunities offered by the emergent knowledge society, computers, information technologies, Internet, focus on knowledge management etc. Now ample opportunities are there for self learning anything from swiming to driving to creating bombs using self -instructonal manuals available in Internet. Library professionals should use such opportunities..Learning any computer application is not at all a difficult thing as in the past. There was a time when even installing our cds-isis was a herculean task. If any library school or teacher claims that all is well, it shows the lack of his exposure or his disinterest in making his students as good peformers.It is a difficult to remain as a good teacher in a library school, when everything is changing so fast. Any library professional should have a good knowledge on library science, the specific subject he deals with and information technologies. We can go ahead only when we learn that we know less and there exist a lot more to learn. Regards,. As discussed about adding additional theory paper at 3rd and 4th semester in degrees to make more specialist in this domain. As a student I am not statisfy with this idea, because most of the students will study in the point of examination only, so adding one more theory paper is not sufficient.
