Dear Friends, I personally regret for the mistakes both spelling and gramatical in the posting which was appeared in this forum on 31/03/2009 report on conference at NAL on "Scholorly Communication in India in the Age of the Commons (Open Access). I think it is typing error. I also regret with the organizers of the program. With the good intention and open mind, i have written report. Scrutinizing LISFORUM postings

Dear Professional friends, Many a times we waste our time in reading very badly written as well as frivolous postings in the LIS-FORUM. We should not forget that these messages are read by more than 2000 professionals including academicians not only in India but abroad as well. I do understand that it would be difficult to read all the postings by the moderator as it is a voluntary service and not a paid job to spare lot of office timings for this work. However we members of this forum need to take care of sending only professionally useful messages of good quality. I would like to quote one of the recent posting on 31-3-2009 reporting about recently held conference at NAL on "Scholorly Communication in India in the Age of the Commons (Open Access)". While any one can give their opinion about any event, the report should be posted only by the concerned like Organizing Secretary / Convener, etc. The least one has to do is to read the postings at least once before sending it to the LIS-FORUM. This report contained sentences like: "...... the conference begin with "WORM" welcome by...." ".....Arunachalaiah was brief the significance of...." ".....Prof. Mukunda was also inaugurated...." ".....Dy Head, ICAST was "comparer...." "....He has argues a scientific judgement..." While I had appreciate the enthusiasm of the concened professional, I request him and others as well to take care of correctness before submitting postings to the extent possible atleast it should not give different altogether. In fact almost two years back I had posted an item on LIS-FORUM about DOs and Don'ts LIS-FORUM postings. I remember one or two now: 1. If any professional gets an award or achieves something definitely it is an item to be announced by some body who comes to know about the achievement. The first announcement is most welcome. However further postings on the same news congratulating one after the other and the recipient reciprocating the same for every mail should be avoided. One can as well congratulate the individual to his email once the posting is already done through LIS-FORUM. 2. ILL requests are most welcome on LIS-FORUM. Further postings on the same item like thanking through Lis-Forum are unnecessary. 3. It is interesting when some body raises an issue concerned to profession/service and others react. I appreciate the recent postings with issues and topics like SOUL, NEWGENLIB. Any number of reactions are welcome on such topics. 4. Although it takes away some time of the moderator, I strongly feel that he should have a look at the content of the posting. Either he can correct himself before releasing the posting or return it back to the sender if too many mistakes are found, unless it is very urgent message. Hi! Department of Information Technology, Government of India is in the process of formulating the national initiative on National Digital Preservation Programme (NDPP). It is intended to address the technological challenges involved in the long term digital preservation of historically significant cultural materials, heritage archives, citizen information, libraries, scientific data, and other important information resources, etc. More details about the programme can be had from www.ndpp.in. ISiM Research Colloquium (1) Date: April 3, 2009 Time: 3:00 p.m. onwards Presentation (1) Title of the talk: On the Nature of Co-citations: Interpretation and Analysis Speaker: Mandar R. Mutalikdesai, Research Scholar, IIITB Abstract: Co-citation has long been used as a measure of topical similarity between objects in various data sets. However, there are some characteristic differences in the way co-citations are formed in different data sets. We summarize these differences with respect to scientific literature, WWW pages and Wikipedia pages. Based on this, we propose three interpretations of co-citations: (1) Endorsements of citations, (2) Knowledge aggregation activities, and (3) Measures of conditional topical relevance. We shall briefly discuss all three interpretations. However, this talk will mainly elaborate on the first interpretation: Co-citations as endorsements of citations. Such an interpretation gives a new measure that can be used by focused or topical crawlers/surfers to surf the Web and digital libraries such as CiteSeer in a fashion that is most pertinent to the topic of interest. We also find some interesting patterns of "citation endorsements" on the Web and on CiteSeer, which we will discuss in this talk. Finally, we propose a topical ranking scheme based on citation endorsements, which can be used as a fine tuning measure to existing techniques for relevance ranking in citation graphs. Presentation (2) Title: Mining Semantics from Lexical Cooccurrence Data Speaker: Aditya Ramana Rachakonda, Research Scholar, IIITB Abstract: Lexical cooccurrence in documents is not uniformly random. The statistics inferred from the term cooccurrence data enable us to probabilistically model the dependencies between terms. It has been argued in cognitive sciences that these dependencies closely resemble the way semantic memory is organised in human beings. This work attempts to model some commonly used semantic associations as probabilistic measures to enable mining of semantics automatically from text corpora. The semantic associations being modelled are synonyms like car and automobile, semantic siblings like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid and topical anchors like Disney for Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Pluto. Of these, some results on topical anchors will be presented in more detail. You are cordially invited. Dear Mr. Soni Migration of data from Koha to NewGenLib or from NewGenLib to Koha is quite simple because both of these FLOSS based LMSs are quite clear and transparent in implementing MARC 21 and ISO-2709 (unlike some commercial LMSs in India where data transformation facilities are poor, non-standard and sometimes blocked intentionally for obvious commercial reasons).
