TOPIC: Institutional Archives and the Writing of Contemporary History SPEAKER: Mrs. Indira Chowdhury PLACE: Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS) 702, 'Upstairs', 42nd Cross, III Block Rajajinagar, Bangalore - 560 010 DATE & TIME: Saturday April 25, 2009 at 6.00 p.m. ABOUT THE LECTURE: In this presentation, Speaker shall be drawing on her recent experience in setting up the Archives of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Science in Mumbai and focus on the factors that shape the writing of contemporary history. What are the resources that contemporary history can draw on to rediscover and document the environment in which particular events took place in the not too distant past? While setting up the Archives of the Institute Homi Bhabha built, it soon became clear that examining just the annual reports and technical papers were insufficient to understand the historical circumstances that gave birth to the Institute two years before Indian independence. What resources could then be used in understanding, accessing and assessing the influence of the environment on this particular formation? What kind of institution did Homi Bhabha, whose centenary year this is, aim to create when he set up TIFR? And finally, how does a historian tap into other kinds of resources to face the challenges that any institutional archives presents? These are some of the questions that this presentation will address. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Indira Chowdhury was formerly Professor of English at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. A PhD in History from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, her book The Frail Hero and Virile History (OUP, 1998) was awarded the Tagore Prize (Rabindra Puraskar) in 2000. Also interested in lexicography she also compiled the Supplement of Indian English words published in the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary in 1995. In 2004, she published The First Promise - a translation of a major Bengali novel into English. She is based in Bangalore where she has set up Archival Resources for Contemporary History a Consultancy service for Institutions, families and communities. She is a Consultant Archivist for several institutions among them, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, IIT Kanpur, Naandi, Hyderabad and Dr Reddy's Laboratory, Hyderabad. Which open source ILS is best? A short answer

Dear Friends, I confronted with this query at various occasions. My view towards this topic is follows. We have to consider the truth; no ILS is perfect in all aspects. If we learn in detail, we can find that each ILS (both commercial and open source) has its own strength and weakness. In the case of Koha (version 3.1) acquisition module has only basic features. Current acquisition module may not be suitable for big library system. It does not mean Koha is not good. Open source software development is community dependent and improving day by day with the help of users and developers across the world. Next release of Koha (3.2) will introduce new acquisition module with new features. Another freedom with open source ILS is the free availability. No trial version, you can try full version. You can install two or three popular open source ILS in your test machine and make a detailed comparative study. Go through all modules and try all features in each ILS. Check whether each ILS can match with your functional requirements in your library. Basic functional modules will be same with most of the open source ILS. But you can find certain features are more suitable for the library environment where software developed. Most of the open source ILS projects are originated from different countries. Koha developed for Harowhenua Library Trust, New Zealand, Evergreen developed for PINES consortium in USA and GNUTECA developed in Brazil. In certain cases open source ILS popular in one country may not be ready to use for libraries in other countries. For example PMB open source ILS is popular in France and more suitable for library environment there. NewGenLib genuinely developed for the requirements of Indian libraries and you can find more features suitable for Indian libraries. Health of an open source ILS project depends up on the degree of involvement by users and developers group. Users valuable suggestions are necessary to fix bugs, find usability problems and make more improvements. Koha has more community support than any other open source ILS. Other things we have to consider while selecting open source ILS are availability of detailed documentation, user friendly interface, standards for interchange of data, community and commercial support. -- Vimal Kumar V. The project that he wants President Obama and the US Congress to back would see the country's library and other cultural collections digitised and put on the web. In an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, ARL's Charles B. Lowry argued that 'Investing in an open, universal digital commons will help ease the current economic crisis by creating jobs, equipping workers with 21st-century skills, and laying a foundation for innovation and national competitiveness in business and research.' He believes that infrastructure developments should go beyond roads and bridges. 'We should also build our digital infrastructure and equip workers with skills they can use in the years ahead—skills for the information age,' he explained. According to Lowry, with immediate funding, up to 10,000 people could quickly be trained and employed scanning public-domain library materials. He estimates that creating a universal digital library of 10 million books would cost $300 million, which he sees as a modest price tag compared with many public-works projects. Lowry's opinion piece, 'Let’s Spur Recovery by Investing in Information,' appeared in the 6 February 2009, issue of the Chronicle. However, it says that academics should be able to choose whether they use the so-called green option (ie, self-archiving in an on-line repository) or to use the gold option (ie, pay-to-publish in an open access journal). This decision, which was made at the EPSRC council's December meeting, follows a consultation by Research Councils UK, in collaboration with the Research Information Network and the Department of Trade and Industry. ESPRC was the only one of the seven Research Councils UK, which hadn't already adopted an open-access mandate; the others having announced theirs back in 2006. OCLCs new initiative

Friends OCLC has recently announced a major initiative, what it calls, "the first Web-scale, cooperative library management service". This will ultimately bring into WorldCat Local the full complement of functions traditionally performed by a locally installed integrated library system (ILS). The initiative, when it becomes full-fledged wll no doubt challenge the ILS market place. OCLC's vision involves shifting increasing portions of activity managed library-by-library through locally or consortially implemented automation systems to the network level, subsumed under the global WorldCat infrastructure. Libraries that subscribe to FirstSearch WorldCat will get, for no additional charge, the WorldCat Local "quick start" service: a locally branded catalog interface.
