The Seattle Times Bedbugs hitching rides in books? Yep, and it's happening here. A New York Times piece about bedbugs and other crawly creatures showing up in library books says the problem is occurring across the country — including at the University of Washington. The article quotes Stephanie Lamson, head of preservation services at the University of Washington Libraries, saying she has put bug-infested books in plastic bags and then into freezers to kill the critters. Lamson said twice in August, circulation-desk employees at the UW Libraries saw insects crawling in returned books. She immediately put the books in a freezer in the natural-history museum, at temperatures of minus 18 degrees Fahrenheit. -- Warm regards. Google launches Dead Sea Scrolls online library More than six decades since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls - and thousands of years after they were written - Israel on Tuesday put 5,000 images of the ancient biblical artifacts online in a partnership with Google. The digital library contains the Book of Deuteronomy, which includes the second listing of the Ten Commandments, and a portion of the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, dated to the first century B.C. Israeli officials said this is part of an attempt by the custodians of the celebrated manuscripts - often criticized for allowing them to be monopolized by small circles of scholars - to make them broadly available. "Only five conservators worldwide are authorized to handle the Dead Sea Scrolls," said Shuka Dorfman, director of the Israel Antiquities Authority. "Now, everyone can touch the scroll on screen around the globe." Last year, Google partnered with the Israel Museum to put five scrolls online. Dead Sea scrolls go online The scrolls, considered one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century, are thought to have been written or collected by an ascetic Jewish sect that fled Jerusalem to the desert 2,000 years ago and settled at Qumran, near the shore of the Dead Sea. The hundreds of manuscripts found in caves near the site have shed light on the development of the Hebrew Bible and the origins of Christianity. Google says the new digital library took two years to assemble, using technology first developed by NASA. The multimedia website allows users to zoom in on various fragments, with translations and Google maps alongside. Google hopes to further expand its project. Two months ago Google launched a "Cultural Institute," a digital visual archive of historical events in cooperation with 17 museums and institutes around the world. "We're working to bring important cultural and historical materials online and help preserve them for future generations," said Yossi Matias, head of Google's Research and Development Center in Israel. "Our partnership with the Israel Antiquities Authority is another step toward enabling users to enjoy cultural material around the world." -- Warm regards. Quora Just Launched A Major Salvo At Google With Its Plan To Become The Internet's 'Library Of Alexandria'

He just announced plans to dramatically expand the site's goals beyond just asking and answering questions, declaring in a blog post that he hoped to build "an Internet-scale Library of Alexandria." That's an implicit challenge to Google, which has long declared its mission to be "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." But D'Angelo noted in his post that the ""vast majority of human knowledge is still not on the Internet. Most of it is trapped in the form of experience in people's heads, or buried in books and papers that only experts can access." Besides asking and answering questions, Quora allows users to write posts about topics on boards, or topical discussion forums on the site. D'Angelo's announcement suggests that Quora will be dramatically expanding such general-purpose writing tools, in competition with Twitter, WordPress, and other Web-publishing options. Obama library battle: Chicago vs. Hawaii

David Jackson, USA TODAY The battle is on for part of President Obama's legacy: The presidential library. The University of Chicago and the University of Hawaii -- schools from Obama's home city and his birth state -- have expressed interest in hosting the library that will hold records from President Obama's administration. Every president since Herbert Hoover has sponsored a library; the George W. Bush library is scheduled to be dedicated next year in Dallas. The Chicago Tribune reports on the competition for the Obama facility: "The University of Hawaii, where the president's parents attended school, has made no secret of its campaign to lure the library to Honolulu. The Hawaii Legislature passed a resolution calling on Obama to choose the state for the library and a committee of government and civic leaders has been put in place to lobby for it. "The (University of Chicago), where Obama was a member of the law school faculty for 12 years, is widely considered the front-runner, though university officials have been tight-lipped about its efforts. However, officials at the National Archives and Records Administration, which administers 13 presidential libraries, confirmed that the U. of C. has expressed interest. "A U. of C. spokesman raised the possibility that a presidential library could be built off campus ... "Wherever it lands, it won't come cheap. (Bill) Clinton's library cost $165 million. The George W. Bush Foundation raised more than $300 million for his. A law passed by Congress in 2008 requires each president's foundation, which raises private money to build the library, to place 60 percent of the cost of the library in an endowment to offset the government's operating and maintenance costs once it opens. Library Science and Kerala University - Nothing new in the attitude

Dear friendsI dont find something new in the attitude of Kerala University towards library science and working librarians. I was a student of Kerala University during 1983. After that I wanted to have my Masters through some distance course as I did not get a chance at Kerala University. Since I was working in Government of Kerala, never had a chance to get deputed also. I wanted to try Madras University distance course in the year 1991. I came to know that the Kerala University do not recognize the Madras distance course. I approached all doors at that time including the faculty at Kerala university . But my requests were unheard by the authorities. I know that at that time also the faculty were engaged as examines for such distance courses. This is not a blame at all but as I got a chance to open up my mind I am writing this. The department never helped the librarians in the Kerala Government to come up. We had all sorts of hindrance! s and those who have come up have reached there through their own efforts. Meet Mr Mugesan - the barefoot librarian

Mr Murgesan of Dindukkal in Tamilnadu is a rare personality. Born in Kumaran Thandalam village near Alankanallur in Madurai, he is a 72 year old librarian cum second handbook seller with a difference. He enjoys procuring and supplying books in Tamil Language, culture and literature useful MPhil and PhD Scholars in several universities.He has studied only up to second class! He developed a taste for books when he was running a shop for waste paper. Books and pamphlets attracted him. Started attending free seminars, debates, conferences etc. He had the opportunity of many students and teachers visiting his shop because of useful collection of books. He has named his children: IRaiMani, IRaiRani, IRaiMalar, IRaiEeasan etc. IRai stands for God in Tamil. Some customers who were surprised by his devotion to Tamil language and culture, though utterly uneducated in a formal sense, suggested that he supplies books to university research students.He has been peddling his wares with sack load of books on his back for about twenty years. He is fondly referred to as "Putthaga Taathaa" (old man with books) by students. He has helped a few thousand students to complete their research courses. One Susheela Gopalan mentioned his contribution and acknowledged his help in her PhD thesis. Since then, quite a large number of Research dissertations include his name in acknowledged page. As a librarian, I can say this is a direct honor for self less work. Murugesan does not charge anything specific for his service. He accepts whatever is given happily. He buys season ticket from Dindukkal to Madurai regularly. Within cities and towns he goes by bus or walk. Any book required by a scholar is located (within a week utmost) in a book shop or library, bought / borrowed and delivered at the residence of customer. All out of love for helping academics. He is proud to mention that the ice Chancellor of Tamil University Tanjavur, Ma Thirumalai and HOD of Tamil Dept, Smt Chandira are among his beneficiaries.
