Dear Sir/Madam, Sorry for the cross posting, I am happy to inform you that, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is organising a National Conference on “Redefining Libraries in Electronic Age (RLEA-2013)”, in the month of November, 2013. At VTU Campus, Belgaum. The role of Library and Information Centers in the present era is ever changing and the traditional services have taken a new shape in the light of developments in Information and Communication Technologies [ICTs]. Physical locations for ease of access to Library resources no longer an issue. Now Libraries are facilitating their users with 24 x 7 access using Internet Technology. Today physical use of libraries is declining drastically and most of the Librarians are expressing their concern over this development and are feeling insecure due to fall of user attendance in Libraries. This need not be the concern of Librarians. Today the users are techno-savvy and access more information than the earlier users. The libraries used to supply limited reference resources to their users earlier, but today's users will get multiple resources on their fingertips. Hence the concern for Librarians of these days should be to redefine the role of Libraries in reaching out the right information to the right user at a right time. It is essential for social sciences in developing countries to pay much greater attention to the parochial nature of its knowledge and the need for indigenization. In a situation of digital resources are becoming more visible in the social science, use of these resources by scholars remains limited. Social Science disciplines have come to rely on computers and electronic communication for some of their daily work, but the use of digital information resources has yet to become routine. Digital libraries are still evolving, and librarians and other information professionals are just beginning to understand and exploit the computer’s ability to assist in the Social Science research process. Research on prerequisites for development of digital libraries by exploring user needs, capabilities and preferences as well as obstacles they encounter while using existing electronic inform! ation resources in a pre-digital environment. Social scientists study all aspects of society—from past events and achievements to human behavior and relationships among groups. Therefore, it is part of the social science institutions and associations make a strategy that the social science educational system be so arranged that researchers and students become accustomed to regarding Internet as a tool to be used in the learning process.    About Speaker:  Dr. M. Krishnamurthy is Faculty at Documentation Research and Training Centre, Indian Statistical Institute, Prior to taking this assignment he served as librarian of Indian statistical Institute Bangalore centre, and University Librarian, University of Mysore.  He has 18 years experience   as Librarian.  He is recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship in 2006 and visited Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Illinois (USA), and also he is recipient of the Open Repository Scholarship to attend Sydney, Australia conference in 2007. He has contributed extensively to national and international journals and conferences   (80 articles).  He received Bharath Shiksha Ratana Award in 2102, and ILA CD Sharma Best paper award in 2013..His research interests are in the uses of emerging information and communications technologies (ICTs) to enhance libraries and education. His research and teaching are in! the areas of Social Networking, Digital Archives, Digital Libraries, and Educational Technology. It is very sad to know that F.W. Lancaster is no more! Over a period of four decades F.W Lancaster was continuously engaged as a visionary leader in the field of Library and Information Science. His research, writings, and teachings have earned him the highest honor in the profession . F.W. Lancaster excelled at many fronts as as scholar, educator, mentor, and writer. He visited India (Indian Statistical Institute), 1991 as Fulbright scholar and spent lot of time in the library (ISIBC) Recipient of the 1978, and 1992 award by the American Society for Information Science for the best book of the year on information science. His classic books are bible for the LIS professions namely , Indexing and abstracting theory and practice, If you want Evaluate your library Services, Paper Less Society,Online Systems for Information Access and Retrieval .
