We’ve learned some other things too, of course, but for today’s lesson in library lateness, just go with it. Moving on! A Texas man was arrested this week for failing to return a GED study guide he simply spent too long studying — three years — and was sent to jail to mull over his actions, or lack thereof. It’s not like he’s serving hard time or anything, though. People like him are usually released on a $200 bond after arrest, notes a municipal judge. The library told the municipal court and boom, you’ve got an active overdue libraries material warrant on your head and cops can bring you in during a routine stop. To those who say it sounds unfair to go to jail over a book, just think about the people who might want or need that same tome, only to find it unavailable, said the judge. That’s why the city passed the ordinance allowing for arrest warrants in these cases a few years ago — it was getting too expensive to replace materials that weren’t coming back. “Universal hatred,” the judge calls the reaction to the ordinance. “Nobody wants to get arrested over a library book. The other side of that is people that go to our library and can’t have these materials, they’re put out too,” he said of the reaction to getting an arrest in such a case. The suspect didn’t seem excited to talk to local media about his case, but KTWX notes that a copy of a GED study guide like the one he checked out was back on the shelf, with his library card inside. Due to time-out error in the case of a few participants, we had to conduct it again for them on 30th October, with a different set of questions. Dear Members, NCSI-Net, an informal association comprising of erstwhile NCSI staff and its trainees, was established in 2000. During its 13 years of existence, the association has been constantly engaged in organizing various professional activities like monthly lectures, invited talks, seminars, conferences, and workshops. It has also been collaborating with other professional associations in organizing and conducting various professional activities. Being an informal association, it had its own advantages and to some extent, some constraints, too. Also, many of NCSIians have been expressing their intent, for a long time now, that it should become a registered body so that it can engage itself in lot more diversified activities. Several of senior NCSI-Net members have been mulling about the idea of NCSI-Net being a registered body for a long time. Around March 2013, it was decided that NCSI-Net would be registered as a charitable trust. The process for registration was started thereafter and after few initial hurdles, we finally managed to get it registered. We are very happy to convey that our plan came into fruition on Friday, 14 June 2013. So, NCSI-Net is now NCSI-Net Foundation, a registered charitable trust. The foundation, for the present, will continue with the existing activities including the annual lecture and seminar series in honor and memory of late Dr. T.B. Rajashekar. In fact, the TBR Memorial lecture, 2013, on "Knowledge Diversity in Media Content Analysis - An Analytico-synthetic Approach" delivered by Dr. Devika P. Madalli of DRTC, on Friday 21 June 2013, was the inaugural event of the foundation. The foundation already has a web presence with a very rudimentary web site, accessible at http://www.ncsinet.org. It will be improved up on in due course of time. We are now gearing up for the second event by the foundation - Dr. T.B. Rajashekar Memorial Seminar. The announcement about the seminar follows: NCSI-Net Foundation cordially invites you to the 9th Dr. TBR Memorial Seminar (2013). This year's topic will be "Digital Information Services in Academic and R&D Information Centers". It's a one-day seminar targeted for the benefit of students of Library and Information Science and budding LIS professionals. The details of the seminar are given below. Is your LIS-Forum mail / posting being distributed to all the members?

Dear Members, The answer to the above question would be both 'yes' and 'no'. The answer would be yes, all the lis-forum members will receive a copy of your posting/reply provided your lis-forum mail is sent in 'plain text' mode. The answer would be 'no', ALL the members may not receive a copy of your mail if your lis-forum mail/reply is not sent in 'plain text' mode If you want the answer to be 'yes' every time you make a posting to the lis-forum, then you just need to ensure that your email client, a program used to access and manage your mails, sends all your lis-forum mails - both new postings and replies - in plain text mode. How does one ensure that the lis-forum mails are sent in 'plain text' mode? Quite simple. For Gmail users, the procedure to be followed is: While composing your LIS-Forum mail/reply, click on the small inverted triangle that appears at the bottom right corner. Clicking it will list the various options. Click on the 'Plain text mode' option. The selection will be saved and all your mails, henceforth, will be sent in Plain text mode. The default mode for Gmail is 'Rich text' and this mode should be avoided for lis-forum mails. For Yahoo users: The default mode in Yahoo is 'Rich text'. To change this to 'Plain text mode', the procedure is: In the 'Compose' screen, click on the '>>' sign to toggle (change) between 'Rich text' and 'Plain text' modes. The '>>' sign appears at the bottom portion of 'Compose' screen. I'm not familiar with other email service providers like Hotmail, Rediffmail, etc. The procedure to send the mails in 'Plain text' mode from these email providers should also be quite straight forward. So, just ensure that your mails to lis-forum are in 'Plain text'. This will guarantee that your mails are distributed to ALL the members of the list. Subscription to LIS-Forum can be made either in the 'digest' mode or in the 'non-digest' mode. In the 'digest' mode, all the approved mails from LIS-Forum are sent as a single mail. In the 'non-digest' mode, the approved mails are sent individually. The mails that are received in the 'Plain text' mode gets distributed to ALL the members without any issues. However, mails that are received in non-plain text mode (rich text, HTML etc), may not reach ALL the members especially those who have subscribed in 'non-digest' mode. So, if your posting/mail is not reaching all the members of the list, you know the reason for that and do take the corrective measure. Thanks for your co-operation.
