Since beginning, the main objective of any library has been to extend maximum services to our library patrons and to achieve the target, libraries are in use of Information Technology for more than 2 decades. Ravichandra Rao, visiting scientist at the Centre for Knowledge Analytics and Ontological Engineering, which is a World Bank funded Centre for excellence at the PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore, and Formerly, Professor and Head, Documentation Research and Training Centre, ISI, Bangalore. Abstract of the Talk: Apart from 50,000 e-journals, millions of e-Books and ETDs are accessible through both Open access and subscribed channels. This apart, Internet Archive alone gives access to more than 430 billion web pages. UGC spends about 180 crores annually towards e-Resources. Many publishers are moving towards online only environment. Managing and providing e-Resources-based services is a complex phenomenon. Library professionals are facing many challenges in promoting usage of e-resources. Some of the challenges that needs to be addressed to enhance the usage of e-resources include: A good library website serving as single point access to all e-resources (E-Resources Portal); Adaption of ERMs including federated search engines and discovery services; Good ICT infrastructure along with good Internet bandwidth; Both camp-wide and off-campus access to e-Resources; Effective department-wise awareness cum orientation programs; etc. Our experiments in this direction at the University of Mysore (UoM) resulted in accounting for 43.17% of usage of UGC Infonet E-Resources in 2013 among 11 universities in Karnataka. Useful tips, techniques and issues useful for promoting usage of e-Resources, especially my experience both at UoM and Bangalore University would be discussed. About Speaker: Dr. Goudar after completing his B.Sc. in Physics and M.Sc. in Human Physiology did his Bachelor's Degree in Library and Information Science from Karnataka University. He also obtained Associateship in Documentation and Information Science from DRTC/ISI in 1979 and his PhD in 'Library and Information Science' from Karnataka University in 2006. He started his career as a Scientific Assistant at CFTRI, Mysore during 1977. Then he moved to L&T, Bombay for a short period of one year as Supervisor-Documentation. He served Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, one of the CSIR organizations for nearly 12 years as Scientist-Information. He was on deputation as Deputy Librarian at IIT, Chennai for a period of one year. In 1992, he joined National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) Bangalore and retired as Head of Information Centre (ICAST) in 2009. Even after several years of his retirement, he is still very active in LIS profession and he has served as Visiting Professor cum Library Adviser in University of Mysore and currently serving as Visiting Professor cum Library Adviser in Bangalore University Library. Dr. Goudar has been bestowed with many honors and awards, notably among them are British Council Scholar during 1993 wherein he visited more than 60 institutions / libraries in England and Scotland and the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship during 1995-96 at universities of Columbia, NY (2 months) and Michigan at Ann Arbor (6 months). This list of recommended formats is an ongoing work; the Library will be reviewing the list and making revisions for an updated version in June 2015. Though the team behind this work continues to put a great deal of thought and research into listing the formats, there is still one more important component needed for the project: the Library of Congress needs suggestions from you. This request is not half-hearted. As the Library increasingly relies on the list to identify preferred formats for acquisition of digital collections, no doubt other institutions will adopt the same list. It is important, therefore, that as the Library undertakes this revision of the recommended formats, it conducts a public dialog about them in order to reach an informed consensus. This public dialog includes librarians, library students, teachers, vendors, publishers, information technologists — anyone and everyone with an opinion on the matter and a stake in preserving digital files. Collaboration is essential for digital preservation. No single institution can know everything and do everything alone. This is a shared challenge. Librarians, what formats would you prefer to receive your digital collections in? What file formats are easiest for you to process and access? Publishers and vendors, what format do you think you should create your digital publications in if you want your stuff to last and be accessible into the future? The time may come when you want to re-monetize a digital publication, so you want to ensure that it is accessible. Those are general questions, of course. Let’s look at the specific file formats the Library has selected so far. The preferred formats are categorized by: Textual Works and Musical Compositions Still Image Works Audio Works Moving Image Works Software and Electronic Gaming and Learning Datasets/Databases Take, for example, digital photographs. Here is the list of formats the Library would most prefer to receive for digital preservation: TIFF (uncompressed) JPEG2000 (lossless (*.jp2) PNG (*.png) JPEG/JFIF (*.jpg) Digital Negative DNG (*.dng) JPEG2000 (lossy) (*.jp2) TIFF (compressed) BMP (*.bmp) GIF (*.gif) Is there anything you think should be changed in that list? If so, why? Or anything added to this list? There’s a section on metadata on that page. Does it say enough? Or too little? Is it clear enough? Should the Library add some description about adding photo metadata into the photo files themselves? Please look over the file categories that interest you and tell us what you think. Help us shape a policy that will affect future digital collections, large and small. Be as specific as you can. Email your questions and comments to the digital preservation experts below. It wouldn’t make sense to create a JPEG from a DNG prior to submitting an image to the Library. We would accept either. It would probably be better to emphasize that the Library is interested in the best version of the file as it was published or created. It is less important that the image is in a format that appears high on the list.
