PLACE: Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS), 702, 'Upstairs', 42nd Cross, III Block, Rajajinagar, Bangalore - 560 010 DATE & TIME: Friday July 10, 2015 at 6.15 p.m. Abstract: The theme of the talk would be on “Open Access (OA)”, predominantly discusses on how “OA journals (OAJ)” play a role in scholarly communication among scientific community. OA is relatively new concept identified and nurtured by the scientists for scholarly communication. As OA and OAJ are the two new concepts emerged with the advent of Internet and web 2.0 tools and technologies. The study on the scientists’ use of OAJ for their Scholarly Communication aimed at finding how OAJ helps in better science communication in general and life scientists in particular. As the OA and OAJ has become a buzz-word in the scholarly world today. This study aimed to find the pulse of the life scientists from among major scientific and R&D institutions in India; to assess their awareness and subsequent use of open access journals. There are very specific issues delved in detail such as copyright, plagiarism, peer review, the reasons for scientist publishing activity and so on. This study also determines the preferences and willingness among life scientists to publish in OAJ as well as commercial publishing of their scholarly research output. About Speaker: Dr. Rajendra Babu H has done Masters in Library and Information Science from Bangalore University. He has done his post master’s training in “IT Applications to Library and Information Services” in National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore-12. He has done his doctoral studies on “Use of Open Access Journals for Scholarly Communication in Life Sciences: A Study” from University of Mysore, Mysore-06. He has over 19 years of professional working experience in Academic institutions and Multinational companies. Presently he is working as an Assistant Professor, Dept. of Studies and Research in Library and Information Science, Tumkur University, Tumkur. He has extensive experience in Developing and Managing world-class Information and Knowledge centers, Content Research functions in HLL, GE, Capco, Symphony Services Corporation and Wipro technologies working with cross border teams. Proposals from all geographic areas will be given consideration. Important dates The Open Repositories Steering Committee is accepting Expressions of Interest (EoI) to host the OR2017 conference until August 31st, 2015. Shortlisted sites will be notified by the end of September 2015. Background Candidate institutions must have the ability to host at least a four-day conference of approximately 300-500 attendees (OR2015 held in Indianapolis, USA drew more than 400 people). This includes appropriate access to conference facilities, lodging, and transportation, as well as the ability to manage a range of supporting services (food services, internet services, and conference social events; conference web site; management of registration and online payments; etc.). The candidate institutions and their local arrangements committee must have the means to support the costs of producing the conference through attendee registration and independent fundraising. Fuller guidance is provided in the Open Repositories Conference Handbook on the Open Repositories wiki. Expressions of Interest Guidelines Organisations interested in proposing to host the OR2017 conference should follow the steps listed below: 1. Expressions of Interest (EoIs) must be received by August 31st, 2015. Please direct these EoIs and any enquiries to OR Steering Committee Chair William Nixon <william.nixon(a)glasgow.ac.uk>. 2. As noted above, the Open Repositories wiki has a set of pages at Open Repositories Conference Handbook which offer guidelines for organising an Open Repositories conference. The EoI must include: the name of the institution (or institutions in the case of a joint bid) an email address as a first point of contact the proposed location for the conference venue with a brief paragraph describing the local amenities that would be available to delegates, including its proximity to a reasonably well-served airport 4. The OR Steering Committee will review proposals and may seek advice from additional reviewers. Following the review, one or more institutions will be invited to submit a detailed proposal. 5. Invitations to submit a detailed proposal will be issued by the end of September 2015; institutions whose interest will not be taken up will also be notified at that time. The invitations sent out will provide a timeline for submitting a formal proposal and details of additional information available to the shortlisted sites for help in the preparation of their bid. Congratulations to Dr. Devendra, Grade II Officer, HAL Library, Bangalore Dr. Devendra is basically from south canara. He hails from a small place near Udupi. He did his Masters in Library & information Science from Mangalore University in 2006. Between 2006 and 2007 he worked as a librarian at Tippu Sultan First Grade College, Mangalore. From 2007 – 08 he was with Srinivasa Institute of Technology, 2008- 2009 he spent valuable time at ISRO Sriharikota, as a library trainee. After his return from Sriharikota, he joined MGM College and very soon shifted to Poorna Pragna Institute of Management, Udupi. When he was in MGM College he registered for PhD at DOSLIS University of Mysore under the guidance of Prof. Khaiser Nikam. His topic of research was “Attitudes of Law Library Users towards OPAC/WEB OPAC in South India: A Study” .He was awarded PhD in LIS in 2014 by University of Mysore. He has co-authored 13 research papers in peer review journals of national & international repute and conference proceedings. Now he is appointed as Grade II Officer at HAL Library, Bangalore. Just about a few days back he has reported for the duty.
