[apologies for cross-posting] ===Invitation for Registration === The International UDC Seminar entitled "Classification & Authority Control: Expanding Resource Discovery" will take place in The National Library of Portugal in Lisbon, on 29-30 October 2015. Linked data practices and techniques have opened new possibilities in exploiting controlled vocabularies and improving resource discovery. Authority data held in library systems often includes classification schemes. These knowledge structures now have the potential for being shared across the linked data environment. The objective of the conference is to explore issues in managing classification vocabulary in and between information systems. Particular emphasis will be on the possibilities for exploiting and sharing subject authority data in the linked data environment. OCLC has printed the last library card yesterday! The first printed card by OCLC was in 1971. By mid-1980s, its printed catalogue production reached the peak. For more and interesting details visit https://www.oclc.org/en-US/news/releases/2015/201529dublin.html What is its implication to libraries in India? The trend of using computer catalogues in Indian libraries are on the steep rise. The demand for card catalogue cabins has fallen to nadir. Those who are still using card catalogues have to switch over to the computer catalogues in the interest of efficacy in information retrieval and user-friendliness. A few implications for library schools also. Should they need to stop teaching cataloguing in the card catalogue formats? Should they immediately start MARC and RDA based cataloguing? As an interdisciplinary subject, data science draws scientific inquiry from a broad range of subjects , for instance, computer science. data mining, mathematics and statistics. Not only, data sciences has heavily influenced economics, business and finance, but it has also impacted academic and applied research in many domains, including biological sciences, machine translation, robotics, social sciences and humanities. There are various tools, technologies and standard methodologies already out there for developing analytical models, which are the core part of data science.
