From IET (publisher of Inspec) www.theiet.org *IET announces the release of arXiv content in Inspec* The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has announced that over 30,000 pre-print articles available in the online repository arXiv will be indexed in Inspec, the leading abstract and indexing database for physics and engineering. The addition of these articles, which will take place by the end of this year, will substantially increase the content held in Inspec, which currently holds over 16 million records, and deliver even greater access to cutting-edge research. Inspec is the first engineering and physics database to index arXiv records, which include open-access e-prints in a variety of disciplines such as Applied Optics, Physics, Astronomy, Circuits and Computer Science. By including arXiv content in Inspec, researchers will now benefit from Inspec's highly-curated, world-leading thesaurus, allowing users to query the records in a way they have not been able to before. Tim Hamer, Director of Knowledge at the IET said: "The inclusion of arXiv records is a significant addition to Inspec's already comprehensive database. This forms part of ongoing developments to the Inspec platform, which will make it easier for researchers to pinpoint the exact content they need. "Our expert team of indexers will bring hundreds of person-years of knowledge invested in the IET's thesaurus to arXiv's pre-print content while the increased coverage and search functionality will enhance discoverability of arXiv's open access articles. Combined with Inspec's existing content, which dates back to 1898, the arXiv content will help researchers develop an even greater understanding of the context of latest developments in their field." This news follows the IET's announcement last month of further developments to the Inspec database that will use semantic enrichment to provide increased connections between articles. Koha - the most widely accepted open source LMS has spread its wings in India with many institutions adopting Koha as their choice of library management system. After the success of the National Koha Conclave in Bangalore early this year, many new initiatives for Koha have been planned in India for supporting Koha users like creating Indian Koha Community, launching KohaCAT, creating Koha training videos to name a few. Reading fragile old manuscripts will become possible thanks to new technology. But that doesn't mean the treasures will be locked away in those pages forever. MIT Media Lab scientists are trying to overcome the problem with a computational imaging system. This breakthrough lets them read the pages of a book even when it’s closed. No, really. The technology uses terahertz radiation, which allows scanning of the pages one by one – through the cover. There’s also a letter interpretation algorithm that can help understand incomplete text. However, there’s a catch. They’ve only managed to develop the technology sufficiently for it to be able to read around nine pages be fore it’s overtaken by noise. Don't blame them – after all, the page being scanned keeps getting farther away, with other material in between. It also cannot measure the depth after 20 pages. So, if you do stumble upon an old and delicate manuscript you dare not open, you’ll have to wait a while before you can hope to interpret its contents. The power and accuracy of the terahertz technology needs to be improved significantly in order to make this a possibility.
