It consists of production, transmission and hearing. Each and every stage involves unavoidable acoustic distortions due to age, gender and other environmental factors. In spite of having these deviations, the linguistic information from speech is easily understood by the listener as and when the communication occurs. This gets materialized, when external linguistic factors change, the internal acoustic models also get changed. The basic speech structures are invariant even though it has these variations. There comes the main reason of evolving speech processing and identifying the knowledge from it. Now days, the technologies are improving to process these speech or acoustics in different forms to extract information and to solve the real world problems. At this juncture, processing of general sound is analyzed along with human voices. Friends: In a short interview I gave Amrit Dhir of Harvard Law School (recorded in 2011), I gave my views on open access. <https://cyber.harvard.edu/node/95198> I said then and I believe now that if OA takes roots in India, China and Brazil then it will be easy all the way. It is doing well in Brazil. It is up to us to adopt it wholeheartedly in India. There have been some efforts, but a lot more remains to be done and done in an organized way. I believe the LIS professionals in academia can play an important role in finishing the unfinished tasks. Best wishes.
