This means that he is an inventor, an importer of knowledge and a maintenance person all in one. We, as researchers, are both globally minded scholars and locally committed citizens. And we are responsible for the level of knowledge and also for the competitiveness of the local society. sorry for cross posting if any!! ------------------------------------------ Thomson ISI Announces Highest-Impact Journals of the Decade Ranked by Citations Per Paper from 1992 to 2002 Philadelphia PA, USA June 24, 2003 � In the latest issue of Science Watch, Thomson ISI announced the highest-impact journals in selected fields of science over the last decade. In the May/June issue, the Science Watch feature article lists the top 10 journals according to citations per paper in 11 main fields (biology & biochemistry, chemistry, clinical medicine, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology & genetics, neuroscience & behavior, pharmacology, physics, plant & animal sciences, and space science). For these rankings, Science Watch turned to the Thomson ISI Web-based evaluation tool, Essential Science Indicators, which tracks publication and citation data over the last 10 years (with updates every two months). These findings are based on papers published and cited in journals indexed by Thomson ISI between January 1, 1992 and December 31, 2002. In addition to ranking specialty journals in each field, Essential Science Indicators also assigns individual papers in multidisciplinary journals to their respective fields. Of the multidisciplinary journals, Nature and Science enjoy particularly strong showings. Some of the specialty journals making the lists include the New England Journal of Medicine (Clinical Medicine), Brain (Neuroscience & Behavior), Drugs (Pharmacology & Toxicology, and Neuron (Neuroscience & Behavior), to name just a few. Arun [Subbiah Arunachalam] The United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UN-CSTD) is organizing four Internet Working Groups to provide input into a panel meeting in October 2003 on "Promoting the application of science and technology to meet the Millennium Development Goals". Government representatives, UN agencies, academics, private sector representatives and any other interested individuals or bodies are invited to contribute recommendations to one or more of the Working Groups from 15 June to 15 August. To join in, send an e-mail to stdev(a)unctad.org indicating with an X in the brackets [X] which Working Group(s) you wish to join. Approximately a week before your Working Group(s) begin(s), you will receive detailed information about the discussion. The four Groups are: [ ] cstd-newtech--Improving the policy environment for the application of S&T to development by identifying potential risks and benefits of new and emerging technologies; [ ] cstd-research--Strengthening basic and applied research in developing countries and international scientific networking; [ ] cstd-advisory-- Strengthening technology support institutions and science advisory mechanisms; building human capacity; identifying new technologies and applications; and encouraging international collaboration to support research in neglected fields; and [ ] cstd-universal--Promoting universal Internet access at affordable costs and building strategic partnerships in the field of science and technology for development and capacity building for competitiveness.
