My major responsibility at this new Institute is to setup a state-of-the-art library and information facilities and serve the community effectively. Being just two years old Institute, we are in the process of building the core collection ( in all formats) of books, journals, CDs, DVDs, Video cassettes and other reading materials in the areas of ICT to support our academic and research activities. We are currently in the process of selecting a panel of efficient and reliable agencies for the supply of educational resources that come in the form of CDs, VCDs, DVDs, Video cassettes etc. I would therefore appreciate, if you could kindly help me by providing the names (with contact address details) of some of the good suppliers for these materials that you have come across or dealt with. Robots of web search engines can not collect information about the content of documents from the web pages (HTML pages), as a HTML tags provide no semantic clues about the content of the document. This leads to noise in indexing. One solution is providing meaning to web content by adding metadata. Semantic web is based on Resource Description Frame work (RDF) using eXtensible Markup Language (XML) for syntax and Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) as a naming convention.. DRTC announces a 3 day workshop focusing on the various standards and Request For Comments (RFC) to enable library and information professionals in creating semantic web. The workshop will emphasize on comprehensive theory and practice. Themes: * Semantic Web: Overview * Metadata * Automatic Extraction of Metadata Using a Context Thesaurus * Mobile Access to the Semantic Web * Metadata for Learning Objects on the Web * Retrieval in Indian Languages * RDF * XML * Web Ontology and Taxonomy * OWL (Web Ontology Language) * Naming Conventions URI, URN, etc Resource Persons: Experts from Dalhousie University, Canada and University of Hyderabad, DRTC faculty. Dear Friends, Few days back there was lot of debate on this forum to have a database of Indian Librarians [Information Professionals]. Then there was one solution, which basically was very near to an On-Line Bulletin Board/Forum. Just to check out what all it takes to start an On-Line Bulletin / Forum. I created an Bulletin Board/Forum at http://indlibra.myforum.net . It has been named as IndLIBRA. It is for discussion among Indian Librarians and Inforamtion Scientists. Can you guess how much time it might have taken!!!? It was done with in 10 Minutes!!!. No prizes for guessing it right. This 10 minutes also includes getting a Yahoo email account (which I will never use!!), was given to register for the free Forum. Check out http://indlibra.myforum.net and have fun. However the question is always "who will bell the cat?" (Who will pay for the expenses involved?) I have some suggestions in this respect. To have a good database of Indian librarians, why not use the existing librarians directory in www.infolibrarian.com ? OR you may try Inflibnets Experts Database as well. The latter is academic librarians oriented; Inflibnet database's Data Entry Form is far too detailed and this might deter many from adding their own data. Infolibrarian is for ALL librarians. Every librarian, big or small, may be persuaded to enter his details here. It so happens that only Juniors enter their data in such databases. Seniors are too proud to lend their names to be included. To obviate this problem each institute/library may request one of the colleagues to enter all library professionals names into this infolibrarian directory. We have a number of sources for details of librarians like INFLIBNET, INFOLIBRARIAN. ILA, IASLIC, SIS, ALSD, BONET, CALIBNET etc Let us not proliferate more directories that are difficult to keep updated. Let us strengthen just one (ANY ONE) and make it a BIG success. Library Science Schools can ask their students to take up projects of 'mass population' of such databases. For instance some student in SNDT or Mysore University can say collect details of all librarians in Mumbai or Mysore and enter say a substantial part of it into infolibrarian database. Here teamwork mught help large scale data entry. SHe will get project credit from the library school. And the directory would serve him later on in his/her professional life as well. Incidentally the SNDT had (has?) website with a directory of suppliers of Library Requisites -- If this is up and updated our friends like Usha Kumari of Bangalore need not ask FORUM members for sources regarding Electronic display Boards (and hoping for some answer!).
