Vyasamoorthy, P ==================== SOUTHERN NEWS - ANDHRA PRADESH May 17, 2005 New-look British Library beckons readers Monday May 16 2005 09:48 IST HYDERABAD: British Library, the landmark of the intelligentsia, will wear a new look and offer more services to the people of Hyderabad. In a few weeks, it will turn into a hub centre training people in English accent and other soft skills that will aid a candidate in grabbing the BPO and ITES jobs. There will be self-help literature and a full-time tutor at the library will make things easy for you. The library will have an elegantly done wooden floor with an enhanced security system. The differently-abled can now have easy access of the library and steer the wheelchair in the premises. Aesthetic lighting will replace the existing conventional lighting. These and more will be ready by May 19 when the facilities will be opened to public by Osmania University Vice-Chancellor Prof Suleman Siddique. Edmund Marsden, Minister (Cultural Affairs), British High Commission and Eunice Crook, First Secretary (Cultural Affairs) will come to the city. The British Library has spent close to Rs 1 crore for the refurbishing. ''This is our effort to make the library a hub for learning, creativity and networking,'' says British Library manager Sudhakar Goud. The young learners' section in the library is also redone. More interactive seminars, workshops and activity-oriented events will be held here, he says. A workshop on puppetry is on and noted academician C Ramaiah will give a lecture on unleashing creativity (thankfully not on preparing for IIT). A programme on the role of newspapers in creating a fun atmosphere and a session for better parenting are also on the cards, says Sudhakar. The members can have access to 7,000 online journals, 30,000 books, 10,000 children books, 1,000 World Bank related documents and high speed internet for research. The Google Scholar project which launched in November 2004 has responded to the complaints of many academic and research librarians by expanding its usefulness for campus-based users. Its new institutional access feature links Google Scholar users to electronic versions?and even print versions?of journals accessible through library collections. Any library using OpenURLs and meeting Google Scholar?s conditions can join the program. Authorization of ?appropriate copy? to individual library patrons, ?on-campus or off,? remains the library?s electronic responsibility. Unlike many commercial information services, Google offers the institutional link resolving at its usual attractive rate?free. Within days of the announcement, a reported 150 libraries had joined. Librarians interested in linking their holdings through Google Scholar should start by going to the ?Support for Libraries? page (http://scholar.google.com/scholar/libraries.html) The page also describes the ?Library Search? function in Google Scholar that connects to scholarly texts identified from OCLC?s Open WorldCat collection. MyLISA Mock Interview and Lecture - A Note

Dear Professional, Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists Association (R) (MyLISA) organized a workshop on �Interview and Interviewing Skills� on May 14, 2005 at Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore. As a part of the workshop a mock interview was conducted to the students of Library and Information Science. The objective was to train and encourage the students to attend the interviews in their career more confidently. A mock advertisement for two posts � Assistant Librarian (General) and Assistant Librarian (Automation) � was announced on April 16, 2005 at the Department�s Notice Board. Eighteen students from MLISc final year applied, of which 15 students attended the interview. The selected candidate will be awarded a prize during the MyLISA anniversary day to be held in the near future. The actual interview took place in a �real environment�. An eminent professor of HRD from SDM-IMD Prof.K.Balakrishanan, a well-known librarian Sri. Puttannaiah and Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, faculty member of the Department of Library and Information Science conducted the interview for nearly two hours. The students were grilled about their knowledge in the subject as well as ICTs. At the end of the interview of each student, suggestions were given with a view to improve their performance in the future interviews. A very positive feedback from the students endeared that this has been a fruitful exercise. The second part of the workshop was the general feedback of the interviewers to the students. Mr. Puttannaiah summarized the proceedings of the interview. He highlighted the expectations of an Interview Committee and also stressed on preparations required which would help to improve the performance of the candidates in the interview. He suggested that normally students will be tested in the interview for their Communication Skills, General Knowledge, Domain Knowledge i.e., students comprehension about the issues and concepts in Library and Information Science, basic Knowledge about the Subjects in their Degree, depth of their understating about students area of Specialization, etc., and skills in ICTs. Prof. K. Balakrishnan who was another interviewer gave an excellent discourse on "Interview and Interviewing Skills". The talk covered both perspectives �the interviewee and the interviewer. The lecture examined typical respondent behaviour and the kinds of skills an interviewer must possess in order to be able to interpret the responses received. The second part of the workshop was attended by practicing librarians as well as student members of MyLISA.
