IBM Computers to Create Virtual Brain

Dear Friends, Now we may have a chance to see real 5th generation computers or we may call it has 6th generation computers. IBM, in partnership with scientists at Switzerland's Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne's (EPFL) Brain and Mind Institute will begin simulating the brain's biological systems and output the data as a working 3-dimensional model that will recreate the high-speed electro-chemical interactions that take place within the brain's interior. These include cognitive functions such as language, learning, perception and memory in addition to brain malfunction such as psychiatric disorders like depression and autism. "Modeling the brain at the cellular level is a massive undertaking because of the hundreds of thousands of parameters that need to be taken into account," said Professor Henry Markram, the EPFL project leader. "IBM has unparalleled experience in biological simulations and the most advanced supercomputing technology in the world. With our combined resources and expertise we are embarking on one of the most ambitious research initiatives ever undertaken in the field of neuroscience." At EPFL, over a decade of knowledge accumulated from wet lab experiments has been consolidated into a set of empirical data on the Microsoft-architecture of brain's neocortex. The first phase of the project -- nicknamed "Blue Brain" -- will focus directly on the neocortex, which makes up approximately 85 percent of the human brain. >From there, the modeling will expand to other regions of the brain and, if successful, shed light on the relationships between genetic, molecular and cognitive functions of the brain. IBM will equip Blue Brain with four Blue Gene super computer racks. The system will occupy the floor space of roughly four refrigerators with a peak performance of 22.8 teraflops. IBM's Blue Gene systems are presently the world's fastest supercomputers, achieving a peak performance of 5.7 teraflops per single rack system. Each rack occupies one square meter and energy consumption is reduced from previous IBM systems, changing the economics of super computing and prompting IBM to start its Capacity on Demand service where computing power is leased out to customers in a time share type model. Under its agreement with IBM, EPFL has entered into a Capacity on Demand type sharing arrangement were IBM says computing power will be leased out to other research projects ranging from post-CMOS technology studies to build smaller transistors to examining folding proteins and their role in diseases like Creutzfeldt-Jakob. Publicly funded research must be available via open access

Friends: On the occasion of their silver jubilee, Informatics India have brought out a collection of essays entitled "Turning pages: Reflections in Info-times". Commenting on the NIH initiative (PubMed Central), Dr K Satyanarayana of ICMR says that India and other developing countries should invest in similar open access initiatives of their own. About three years ago, I was invited to inaugurate a workshop on electronic handling of information at the Tuberculosis Research Centre at Chennai and I had a chance to discuss with a senior IT-savvy official of ICMR the need to set up interoperable institutional open access archives at each one of the ICMR labs. She was very enthusiastic. For some reason, as far as I know, no ICMR lab has set up one so far. We should analyse what holds us back from translating our intentions into reality. Fortunately, the Indian MEDLARS Centre at NIC has now come up with an archive [for biomedical research] called OpenMED and last week I had a chance to meet Mr Sukhdev Singh who demonstrated the archive and its various features. Mr Singh has also offered to help OneWorld South Asia set up an archive for development literature. The sad and sudden demise of Dr. TB Rajasekhar is a great shock and unrecoverable loss to the entire library and information profession in the country. Promoting open Access

Friends: Promoting open access has at least two parts. One is to set up an archive at one's own institution, as Rajashekar had done at IISc, and populate it with the institution's research papers quickly. The second part is to help the faculty and students (and researchers in general) to take advantage of the increasing number of papers in the world's open archives. Please tell all your clients (research scientists, professors and students) to search for papers relevant to their work using http://oaister.umdl.umich.edu/cgi/b/bib/bib-idx?c=oaister;page=simple. But at the same time the penetration of IT into the library proffession has slowly creating a gap within LISC profession.Today we have all witnessed that plenty of discussion, seminars, conferences are taking place all over the world to modify and train the library profession ,eventhough the gap seems to be widen over the years. The employment structure of library profession is very diffe! rent one comapre to other profession.Libraries are the house of knowledge ,to capture, organise and to dessiminate information skilled library professionals are very much required there is no doubt it. Educational institutions , corporate firms and other organisations have providing enormous opportunities for Library and Information graduates.But the thing is, if once we get into the job as a school librarian or college librarian it is very difficult to keep up abreast with new developments ,the lack of infrastructure, willingness of librarians, lack of mangement support and all plays a crucial role to keep abreast with new developmets, today high proportion rate of schools and colleges have not provide any facility to librarians to learn and perform his work using new technologies.And most of the seminars and conferences are all centered to corporate and well known institutions not for school are college librarians. this is slowly creating a huge problem that is Librarians di! vide.Today we have to address this issue and carry the LIS profession to more hiegts with providing equal opportunity to everyone.
