President of India to Launch AMRITA-ISRO VRC Network on July 6, 2005 at AMRITA University Campus in Coimbatore Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, a multi-campus, multi-disciplinary University is collaborating with ISRO, India's foremost agency for space technology and research, to launch the AMRITA-ISRO VRC Satellite Network, a comprehensive Satellite-based Rural Transformation Initiative. ISROs vision of the VRC (Village Resource Center) initiative is to create and implement a sustainable, scalable, space technology-supported community infrastructure catalysing the transformation of rural India. The benefits that VRCs are expected to deliver to rural India cover a broad spectrum: Tele-Education: Using best available teachers to deliver superb quality education to large number of rural area schools across the country over the satellite network interactively via multimedia enhanced content; Imparting skill-based training in tune with local needs of the rural population. Tele-Medicine: Delivering basic and specialized healthcare, preventive and diagnostic services digitally at every rural doorstep via satellite networks Tele-Agriculture, Tele-Fisheries, etc.: Enhancing agricultural, fishing, and other rural occupational productivity with active assistance of timely scientific information on earth (soil, land use, etc.), water, weather, etc. Disaster warning and management, etc. Rural entrepreneurship with the help of micro-financing, etc. Thus, the VRC initiative is an ambitious attempt at overall development of Indias vast rural landscape with the help of the best of communication and information technologies. Project Partners The AMRITA-ISRO VRC Project is a one-of-its-kind University-Government-Industry partnership. AMRITA has brought in some of the foremost multinational companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Oracle, TCS, and financial firms such as IL&FS and Dhanalakshmi Bank, as technology and funding partners, to actively support this landmark initiative to launch more than 12 Village Resource Centers on the Satellite Network across India in the first phase. Book lover in Orissa village runs a free library of 30,000 books Madanapur(Orissa): A book lover in Madanapur village of Balasore district in Orissa shares his passion for knowledge and is taking on the fight against ignorance by running a free library of over 30,000 books at his home. In his quest and thirst for knowledge, Bikash Satpathy started 'Loknath' library in 1990.The library, was first set up in a room at his father's residence with as few as 50 books, but this collection has gradually increased over the years to some 30,000 books of different genres, ranging from 300-year-old, palm leaf manuscripts to biographies of famous people. "Human life is very precious but people in villages are ignorant and illiterate and so through my library I want to help these villagers gain knowledge and develop their mental faculties," claims Bikash. The collection includes books in Oriya, English, Hindi, Bengali and Telugu and genre such as fiction, poetry, biography, reference, magazines and periodicals. The library, which is open to all, free of cost, is a "house of knowledge" for many of the villagers. "We get all kinds of books here which are either not available outside or which we cannot afford. The best thing about this library is that we don't have to pay anything to read the books," said Gopal Behera, a villager. Works of eminent authors like Fakir Mohan, Senapati, Gangadhar Meher and Laxmikanta Mohapatra are part of the Oriya collection. Besides, many books that the library houses, there are also a number of interesting bric-a-bracs such as caps of navy, police and army officials, a vast collection of stamps, foreign currency and coins which are on display for curious visitors. "We can call this library a museum because we find a lot of things which we've only heard of before for instance here we have foreign currencies which we never thought we would be able to see in this small village," said Jasabanta Jena, another villager. And the English collection of over 1500 includes the works Leo Tolstoy, Rabindranath Tagore, the autobiography of Jawaharlal Nehru and some periodicals published between 1925 and 1936. For the residents of Madanapur village where the literacy rate is around 40 per cent, the library is its soul and pride. Google Brings the Earth to Your Desktop

Dear Professionals, Google Inc. has launched a new software package that allows you to see satellite images on your desktop. Google Earth lets you search for locations anywhere on earth and display 3D aerial images of major cities and tourist attractions. Google Earth is in development, but a free beta version is available for home users. Locations can be searched by address, intersections, cities, zip codes or countries and the images can be zoomed in close enough to see streets and buildings.
